I don't remember seeing any explanation until the final few episodes, when it was explained TO Kamille, who was supposed to have built it in the first place. In any case, it's very out of place, conflicting with the tone of the past forty-odd epsisodes.

Im pretty sure kamille himself and others brought it up when the zeta was made. he himself made the zeta and the bio-sensor. We the watchers just never knew what the bio sensor sis till the very end. yes it did clash with the amazing tone of the series and sadly after zeta gundam just wasn't the same. zeta itself was the best gundam series ever made though.

nah, depressed tomino was a master mind and knew how to make the characters seem eerily realistic, you never know what they are really thinking, as in real life. they feel like they have a mind of their own and you never have a clue what they might do next. the whole big thing was this show was about stress under war, all the characters were under a lot of stress and seemed insane at times but that was the fun of it.

For making you realize how much of a hack tomino is, yeah.
The truth is that most people go through the main UC series without feeling much - 0079 and Z share mostly the same problems, and ZZ quickly relapses into the same thing after its first half taking a hamfisted approach/attempt at comedy. Then they go through V, the first 45 episode or so being riddled with the same problems, and then they watch the last 6 or 7 episodes - which are actually good, at least as far as provoking an emotional response goes, even if some might argue that the tactics deployed were "cheap" - and they have an epitome.
"oh, so this is what he was going for all along, except he fucked up every time before this and needs 40 episodes for some fucking reason".
And they move on from tomino and start watching 08th MS, 0080, X, and maybe even a little G.
And they're better for it.
