Please discuss the Touhou games and STGs at large here.

Personal challenge: NMNB stage 4 in your favorite game, any difficulty welcome!

Talon challenge: Try to demonstrate as much "talent" as you can in a single run of some Touhou game. The player with the sharpest talons wins!

I'm rather new to these 2hu challenges, since I mostly played the games to beat them, I also sometimes like the story for it as well.

Is there any recommendations to do score challenges? From what I see, it seems like doing the same patterns until someone has a few points more than another.

> it seems like doing the same patterns until someone has a few points more than another.
Yes, that is what scoring is. Now you should be thinking about HOW they achieved the difference in score.

>> No.12788964

>>12788933
it's typically more about general strategy than micro-optimization, unless you're playing an easier difficulty or at an extremely high level. If you're just getting started, try to understand the score system as best you can, and think about how to exploit it for lots of points. If you're totally lost, watch some replays for inspiration

I suppose that makes sense, might play for a bit to check on that I'm not really into walkthroughs.

If a character brings more points on average for a certain game than another character, would scorefags just toss that meta or should exploring be the idea?

>> No.12789057

>>12789002
i don't understand your terminology (toss that meta??? exploring what idea???), but typically people will play any shot type they find fun, and on the big scoreboards, all of the scores are broken up by game, difficulty, and shot type, so you just compare yourself to other people doing the same thing as you. I suppose there is a little bit of extra prestige to having an overall record, but you can worry about that when you get there

So I'm starting with PCB, currently trying to git gud at normal enough to 1CC it.

I don't quite know what to look at and my eyes get lost in the patterns some times and I wind up walking right into a bullet. Happens a lot to me and I most of the time can't even make it past stage 2 without dying at least once. Any advice?

also who should I be playing? Sakuya for the autoaim?

Make sure not to tunnel on the idea that you have to 1CC a single game first. If you keep jumping into the same game and grinding it out, you're likely to burn out, get frustrated and lose interest. I'd advise you to diversify a bit and play the intro stages to at least a few of the games. That's good practice too. Just make sure you're enjoying yourself.

actually i hesitate between HRtP LLS and EoSD. If you have the hardware for it, PC98 musics are really awesome. And I think EoSD's soundtrack has a special ring to it, really "refreshing" but it's pure personal preference.

Some of DDC's song are awesome but i think on average it's not too memorable, but at least it's quite better than TD.

I can kind of see where they're coming from. I'm still pretty bad at the game and only at the point where I can almost 1cc normal, but the couple times I tried to play on Lunatic my score was pretty high just from graze and stage completion multipliers even though I usually got buttblasted. It stands to reason that if you can consistently do as well on lunatic as you can on easier difficulties then your score should be higher, all other things being the same.

You can't. Maybe in a game like TD, but thats an exception.

All lunatic mores score higher than the lower difficulties of their said games, of course your score will be higher. What's important in scoring isn't which mode scores highest, but on which mode can you get the closest to the WR on the said mode.

I would suggest starting out with 6/7, and playing the rest when you feel that you have a bit of a handle on the mechanics. Look up how the resource systems for 12-14 work before playing them, and keep in mind that different games are more or less difficult than others on higher difficulties, so don't go around saying that some of them are specifically easy until you've played them on higher difficulties.

Safespots are considered perfectly fine for "metagaming" purposes (WR runs use safespots whenever possible), and bombing is not "casual" if it is done for scoring. It depends on why you use them.
If you can't pass the pattern otherwise, then I think its somewhat casual.
If you can pass the pattern but don't want to be bothered doing it that run, then I would think its less casual.
And if you have a way to make your run more consistent, you might as well. Play smarter, not harder.
If the safespot takes more skill to actually use than the normal method of dodging the card, I would say its less casual.

>SoEW challenge:

SoEW is the only Touhou game which I would call mediocre. The music is not very well composed, the color palette is lacking, and the controls are both jerky and delayed, at least in comparison with later PC-98 titles.

However, I feel SoEW does a few things right which other games do not:

1. It has a real surreal, apprehensive, and psychedelic feel to it, which is lost in later games. The bosses range from a red herring with a katana to some magical cannon-like rocks to an anachronistic, magical tank, all of which come and go with the intensity and transience of an opium dream. I think it is the game which deserves the title "phantasmagoria" more than any other, and the best thing I can compare it to is Yume Nikki with minimal dialogue and bullets.

2. The varied levels. The later games, especially after the PC-98 series, tend to carry a certain shtick which all the mooks and bosses possess, increasing with intensity until the final boss, even ignoring the changing score systems. You have an overload of byzantine bullets in IN, a new, faster pacing in SA, etc. Each level in SoEW truly feels like a different world, advancing into another, more esoteric domain one after another.

3. The subdued soundtracks. Not every song has to be symphony, and I think this game does it best, especially in songs like "Genmukai."

The best Touhou game you'd like would most likely be SoEW. Forget all fancy post Touhou 2 shit, this is where the peak is at. The rest of the series is simply just riding on a wave of awwesome set by this game. Let me list you why, Layers? This game is good for those. Not only do bullets layer with each other, but even the background and enemy spawns are going into the stray and you have to dodge them as well just to be sure. Also, the penultimate boss has some next level shit and you have to dodge her danmaku while also dodging her options which spawn the bullets. Sick. There are no repeated patterns or shit like that, bosses choose a random attack from their pool and fuck you in the ass with it. To hell with boring memo, this is the true RNG. If you wish for good and realistic quality, you probably should play this game. The enemies are so well made and the bullets look so neat you would not believe it. You can't simply see all of it at times, that's how awesome the graphics are. A true classic. The bullet hitboxes are as they are. No guessing around. No fancy shit. Just pure looking at stuff and dodging it. No aliases, the bullets are who they are: bullets. Design? Man, this game has got it all. Sick star orbs from the deep hell, six mystic lovecraftian balls. And the stage one has a fucking tank. A. Fucking. Tank. Spamming bullets, here it is. Forget about killing the player, here the screen gets so full with shit you wouldn't believe it. Truely random and cool danmaku. I could probably name more, but I'll just have to go and play the game. I'm 100% serious, it's the best Touhou.

Grazing and timing down any Mokou spell is detrimental for your score if you're playing a human other than Youmu. It also doesn't account for a large part of score on those shots, so don't worry about it.

ASL's Reimu run has the difficult death fairy strategy, but is generally not very optimized compared to most other shots. I'm not sure if I have ever watched the Marisa one.

Can't help you with SA, but there is probably some cue to positioning. Or you could play Marisa for the larger grazebox.

If you are who I think you are, you got kicked out of a certain scoreboard for cheating, so if you plan to play and submit more scores you might have some explaining to do.

I remember trying to grind out all her nonspells while being below -80% even if the impact on my score is barely significant. Every bit counts. 100 mil is still a big difference.

It's probably obvious who I am at this point if you frequented that board years ago.

I did post scores for a certain scoreboard for both those categories but I probably left the 2hu scene for a while before that happened. I didn't cheat for anything, mind you, but I have no way of proving that anymore and if there's proof against me for that, well that sucks for me.

Sure wish I could set up a stream or something, oh well.

>100 mil is still a big difference.
Yes, but you should focus on getting it from the stage and cancels, not spell card grazing.

I remember reviewing your Alice extra replay a couple of times back in the day, after it had been brought to attention that your PoFV scores seemed fishy, and thinking that it looked a bit odd in terms of dodging and haphazard approach to some spells.

>Sure wish I could set up a stream or something
That would be a good way to repent the belief of you cheating.

>> No.12850442

>>12850378
Yes, I'm aware of that. Probably fucked up the second portion of the stage the most though.

>a bit odd in terms of dodging and haphazard approach to some spells.
Sure, I guess. I do graze very aggressively at times and it fucks me over more often than not.

PoFV? I didn't really remember much that was crazy when I watched those replays but my play style has definitely been called crazy by others, not just that board. Survival is essentially level 2 bomb spam, is it not?

I do admit trying to get Hourglass to work to practice nonspells because I was a lazy fuck who didn't want to play through the stages just for that but it never worked out. That's as close to TASing as I got.

If I were to stream myself playing (for one, Manycam, OBS and XSplit all lag me when I tried playing IN, isn't that fucking great), it would be me pausing between every other attack to do homework or something for 20 minutes then coming back. It's still something but it's a hassle for everybody and it isn't worth my time anymore.

Hi. Newfag coming in for spoonfeeding.
Just trying to get into Touhou. (Haven't played any stg games ever) I have downloaded the first 5 games for now. How do I get into the storyline, characters etc? Is it somehow contained in the games? I have only played the first one for a while till I reached the Makai/Hell stage. Do I need to read some books or texts on Touhou wikia?

Pathetic shit I am.

Play the games and read the print works to learn about the characters. touhouwiki.net has easy-access information. I would say don't disregard the first five games. There was a retcon but they are still a part of the series and you may like them. Also if you are doing this to be a part of the fandom then you should know about them, although most will tell you 99% of the fanbase is shit.

>> No.12853929

The first game isn't really a traditional STG, and probably isn't a good place to start. Touhou 2 is the first real STG of the series, although the mechanics are still pretty wonky (unstable hitboxes, ability to mash the shot key to shoot faster, etc) and don't get ironed out until the next entry... which is a Vs. Danmaku game that doesn't follow traditional format. If you want to start with the PC98 games, I'd recommend going with Lotus Land Story or Mystic Square (4 or 5) as they're much easier to adapt to than the earlier entries, and similar to the modern Windows series games in gameplay.

On that note- the Windows series games ARE more beginner friendly, especially if you're new to the genre. The ability to see your character's hitbox when using focused movement (holding shift) from Touhou 7 onwards is immensely useful for adapting to the games when you're starting out.

Most people playing at that level actually enjoy their games for one reason or another, and are very conscious of the fact that their extreme proficiency in that one game transfers only very minimally into proficiency at other games, and hardly at all into practical life skills. Her bombs are also p. good especially for getting points for a couple extra lives.
