/jp/ With Christmas coming up, I finally have enough money and a good reason to purchase a SDVX or IIDX controller. Problem is, I don't even have a Sows account or a Pcbid, so I'm still unsure of what to do. I'd love to get a SDVX controller, but it'd be kind of annoying with it just sitting there while I wait weeks on end for an invite to Psun. So, should bite the bullet and purchase a controller or just wait it out until I have a Sows account or a Pcbid? Oh, and building one is out of the question.

I don't understand people who think like this. I went from having basically no woodworking skill to building functional, if ugly, controllers with a very small investment.

You need a pull-saw, a decent piece of wood you can probably get for free, a drill and some spade bits. Buttons can be bought very cheaply, and the arduino/teensy revolution means setting up some rotary encoders for a turntable or knob is a snap. The total cost is far lower, and most men love building shit. I enjoyed making it more than actually using it.

>> No.12779025

yep, this. Pop'n controllers and SDVX controllers are fairly easy. The TT on IIDX makes it a little trickier

>> No.12779037

I found the turntable pretty easy with a decent high resolution rotary encoder, a circle of plastic, and some wax paper.

>>12780134
There's no point in crying about leaked data now. The cat's already out of the bag. If people want to play, they're going to play even if they can't do it online. Leaks happen because of a failure to engage newcomers and make them care about the community. No, having an IRC that isn't even linked from the landing page does not count as engaging people. The ephemeral nature of IRC makes it a poor choice for receiving people. If all it takes to join the community is a few hours of shooting the shit with people on IRC, then of course you're going to have problems. Even what.cd, (who pioneered that pretentious landing page), has a process for informing new users and accepting them into the community with clearly outlined steps.

Have you played rhythm games before this? Either way it'll just take some time to get used to the key layout but even more so if you're not used to rhythm games.
Also do watch the technique videos that got posted, they won't really matter all that much if you're playing 3s but it's good to understand the kind of technique you'll need if you want to climb up to higher songs further down the line without hitting a wall.

Thumbs will become really important, lots of new players tend to just use their three first fingers on each hand and it seems fine but the issue with that is it only lets you cover 6 buttons at once so at least one finger will have to move between two buttons. Once you get to harder songs that transition between those buttons too fast, you won't really be able to hit it. It's also almost impossible to hit notes while scratching unless you use that hand's thumb.

I started out like that and I use thumbs now, I had to just gradually work them into my technique instead going cold turkey with the old way and forcing myself to use them.

I'm not supporting spreading leaks to begin with and I'd never actually throw the links around, but if someone else already posted them I don't see the problem with people using them.

Either way, it's the fault of the invite process for being unfair or failing to serve its purpose of weeding out the undesirables. It's just like Disneyland. Don't blame people for walking on the grass where you failed to put walkways.

The issue with bemani games being released outside of asia doesnt work for these reasons
>no arcade culture
the arcade culture in the us (and this is mainly speculation and second hand information and my opinion) has steadily declined since the 80s and early 90s
video games are easily and cheaply accessable in homes with cheap consoles, many generes and free to play pc games
people arent going to go out to an arcade and spend $1 or $2 for 10 minutes of gameplay when they could stay at home and play the latest $90 carl on duty; black cops on their $350 xbox console for hours on end, without having to spend $2 each time to do it. furthermore, they can simply grab a different game disc and throw it in when they get sick of it, instead of having to find another free arcade machine. the social aspect is made up for my the online play with mic even though thats generally tweens shouting profanities

>casual gamers see anything that requires dedication as a waste of time
the reason cod (and yes i am using this comparison alot, forgive me) is so popular is its a game that anyone can pick up and fuck around with
the respawn time is 10 seconds tops, meaning that there is almost no punishment for doing badly
with a game like iidx, you need literal months to get reasonable at the game
from then, there is an absurdly high skill ceiling with the opportunity to get a _perfect score_, the thing every player strives for
this is also seen in any other rhythm game, though most arent as harsh as iidx
games like iidx and sdvx are not ones that anyone can pick up and play because of the unique techniques you have to memorized and practise to be able to play the game and get a pass score
DDR is different because it has both been around forever and people know what the machines like, and its the sort of game normals will go 'oh yes lets fuck around for 5 mins with this game' becuase its fairly easy to pick up and a sort of social game that everyone can play (c

I wonder what has stopped them from doing home releases now that they're running on PC hardware (with relatively modest requirements).
Are PCs really that unpopular in Japan? Do people just not have the space for controllers now, when they did for the CS releases? Or is it pressure from the arcades?

>> No.12785143

>>12785115
c)
comparing this to japan
>arcade culture exists
infrastructure in japan is hugely based around public transport and well maintained and well laid out street ways (at least in urban areas, ive found)
with so few people driving cars, people are going to be walking to and from places frequently on their commute to and from work or school
people dont always want to go home immediately either, very often you will see groups of schoolkids in japan walking around at 6pm, 7pm still in uniform with backpacks, often going into arcades to play some of the games

>dedication to arcade games exists
because some of the games such as taiko, ddr, iidx have been around so long, there are people who have been playing them for these long long times anyway
if you dump thousands of hours into a game that you love, youre not going to give it up for no reason
these people probably dropped 200 yen into the machine every day after school and gradually grew from 3s to 7s to 10s to 12s
these people are still playing daily on their controllers at home, 10 years later, and still have great friends they made playing who they see regularly
people who want to get better will have the drive to
i have remained good friends with the people i used to play competitive FPS with simply because we had fun that time together, i would be glad to meet any of them in real life, some of them i have. very often friends can keep you playing a game even when youre in a down period, and very often the game can keep you playing when your friends are not
i feel thats what iidx does in terms of dedication, it indirectly commands and creates great friendships and respect among players
for example see >>12784820
to compare this to a real life instance, a guy i played wargames with had an army of guys who were based with seashell and painted to a high quality. he wasnt a good painter himself, and when i asked him he said the army was a gift from his gaming club when he was going through cancer treatment

>> No.12785151

>>12785126
i dont think pressure from the arcades as much as it is better for konami to keep the games in the arcades (?) in terms of fostering a community as well as marketing their new products

furthermore because these games require special controllers, selling good quality ones along with the game is a deterrant for anyone who wants to get into it without having played before, while a guy who wants to get into it (like i did several months ago) can just go to an arcade and play a few rounds to see if they like it
if they like it they do the reasearch and grab an old KASC, but they have friends at the arcade so they still play there, and they play after school/work

Now StepMania's all about nailing those 400 bpm walls of arrows set to dubstep abominations on a 120Hz monitor with a gaudy and expensive mechanical keyboard. Or maybe it always was, and I was just too casual to get to that level.

>> No.12785597

Is there a big difference between DDR and IIDX timing? I guess it might be my home setup but when I play DDR at the arcade I can get AA's pretty often but on IIDX I struggle to get single A's. I only have a handful now.

Is the timing a lot stricter or do you figure it's my setup?

>> No.12785616

>>12785597
DDR has some of the most lenient timing around, because leg control isn't half as good as finger dexterity. IIDX has some of the more stricter timing around.

>> No.12785664

>>12785597
>>12785616
Also a difference is that in DDR the music sounds always the same so you can rely on your ears along with your eyes. On the other hand, since IIDX is keysounded, your timing mistakes (especially the ones where the kick is keysounded) lead to desynced music which, if you're used to rely on music like in DDR, will eventually lead to even more desync, so you have to give a much higher priority to your eyesight to get the timing right.

There is no sure way in. Your best bet is to stick with leaks, chat on IRC and hope. At times it can be difficult, but it helps if you like the community. Better ask yourself how badly do you need to get on Sows. It takes time to build up your ratio to download anything unless there's freeleech going on anyway. Getting data from Sows as a short term plan is plain stupid. Get it elsewhere or not at all and stick to sims for the time being. Idling on IRC like 90% of the people there isn't going to help you in any way.
People should also understand one thing very clearly. PS is only useful if you already have the data. It in no way helps you to find the data or get into Sows.

99% of the time people like to stir up some shit by giving away invites here, on FB or anywhere else just to get the enjoyment out of the fact that people like you sit here or on IRC, hoping to magically get in. People also lie, a lot.
Genuine interest is hard to miss. There are about 10-20 people regularly active on IRC. Newcomers tend to be overlooked, but not missed especially if they hang around for some time. I've hardly seen anyone attempt to join in or if they do, being very stupid about it. Just to reiterate, being there in no way guarantees your way in even if you're active. You're literally relying them to notice you and know you're not already on Sows without constantly making them aware of the fact.

Good luck!

The FPS is designed to have a similar scale to the PS2 KOCs, so it's better if you carry it around from place to place a lot or if you like playing on your lap or something. The turntable isn't arcade sized, it's the same size as a KOC turntable but you can change it between AC distance and KOC distance.

The FPS is bigger and costs a bit more, but it's got an arcade-accurate scaled turntable.

I don't really know what differences the others have, but those are the big two anyways.

Leonardo doesn't require unojoy crap, you can get one for 10 bucks, and it has true accurate support for encoders with 4 interrupt pins. On an uno, you only get 2, leading to major inaccuracies with quality encoders.

Your button presses are turned into keyboard presses and mouse movements, so it usable in KSM and the sensitivity is adjustable in bemanitools. Also no firmware flashing like with SDVXjoy, just upload the code to the Arduino.

The code I posted only works on the Leonardo. The main difference between SDVXjoy and the Leonardo code is that SDVXjoy emulates a PS3 controller and the encoders are mapped to analog controller axises. While the Leonardo emulates a keyboard and mouse setup and the encoders are mapped to the X/Y axis of the mouse. (Also LEOjoy has no LED support)

And for the last question, I'm not sure of the delay the Leo would have but I doubt there would be any at all(Probably on par with SDVXjoy). I haven't tested it yet but I am going to soon, just need my Leonardo to come in and Ill swap my mega out.

I also feel as though I have an easier time AAAing but I know that's in part due to the grading system having Marvs incorporated into normal play so I know when I'm off without reading the receptacles the entire chart (I was one of those people who in Extreme used to read the white flash instead of grade in normal play).
