Kigurumi (着ぐるみ) is a kind of costuming where the player wears a full body skin suit (called hadatai) along with an anime mask. The Japanese word "kigurumi" refers to any kind of full-body costume, but in this thread we're specifically looking for anime masks combined with skin-toned bodysuits - properly known as "animegao" kigurumi.

sure, the style is different from all those japanese masks. but when i finally wanted to buy a mask i had to decide where i'm going to buy. and considering my height i checked what was available.. also i got attached to the style.

i'll see what i can do with it. not like i didn't have the money to buy another one. maybe i'll check my connections in japan. but i guess there's the height problem again.

Il just go out on a limb here, are there any well known western kigurumi performers that don't feud with one another ?

It seems like they (Wyu, Cici, Miharu, Tsuki, Mecha, Mac, Cass, Kuri, etc) are all slightly dysfunctional when it comes to their interaction with one another (or anyone else for that matter).

I was kind of surprised to find out all the well known ones seem to despise one another. Is this normal for the western kig or are they all just really bad examples ?

Still it's true, some performers have had run ins with each other, over more concrete issues than one slighting the other. Amazing what happens when money is involved.

Also understand that there are western Kig performers who fly under the radar, because they don't live on the internet. Their lives are not out there for public display.

Not to go into details, but a long time ago, one Japanese Kigurumi mask maker, found out that a customer from overseas was using a mask they bought, to make pornography.

Since that day they ( the manufacturer ) have not sold masks outside Japan. Other makers set up similar restrictions. Some wrote up the purchase agreement, like you were adopting a female child, and had to be screened before you could make a purchase.One even went as far as making the purchaser sign an agreement, where by the manufacturer had the 'Right' to reclaim the mask if they deemed the client was using it inappropriately.

In this day and age, international shipping is expensive, especially for an item as potentially fragile as a mask. But if a person likes a certain style made by a certain manufacturer, and is willing to pay, the manufacturer will charge all the market will allow.

Look , this happened decades back, and from what I understand this was a commercial Porn studio.

It was certainly enough for the Manufacturer to 'lose face'.

As far as the rest go, mostly it was the control freaks who didn't want their "Babies" to be abused or wanted to retain control as if you were only 'borrowing' a mask they made rather than buying it outright. From what I have read, The live action Sailor Moon Musical stage shows. date back to 1993. I'm assuming the Kigurumi stage shows began shortly thereafter.

The first Hobbiest to take up western Kigurumi did so in 2000, but it was not until 2005 when the "Anime" craze hit the US, that interest in Animegao Kigurumi as a hobby, picked up in North America.

So, the Japanese Kigurumi movement has about 7 years on any of the hobbyists outside Japan.

To the best of my understanding, nobody in western Kig is getting paid to perform, so Japan has over 20 years lead on the US.

Someone said its why they required a letter of recommendation or something along those lines to order from them.

From what was implied in the post, someone "messed it up" for people trying to order from SIGMA as well.

Let me give you a quote or two from the Comprehensive Kigurumi Guide:

There were several companies in Japan, such as Kameari Factory. (Which has been making costumes for TV and stage since 1997.) They made commercial Anime and realistic style FRP masks for sale to the consumer. These can be seen in photos posted on several Japanese Fan sites. There also seems to have been several inexpensive plastic masks of Japanese TV show characters, much like what I know of as Halloween masks. Then there were the professional theatre troupes, which had their own mask manufacturers. All of these were used for the purpose of Animegao Kigurumi.

The turning point for Western Kigurumi seems to have happened in 1999. That's the year that Dolphin Factory and Buildup Studio Sigma, opened and began making animegao masks. These masks were made from Fiberglass Re-enforced Plastic or FRP for short. They were quite similar in fact to the fiberglass shell of an automobile. These were sold both inside and outside Japan, and being generic faces were adapted to portray many characters. Having commercially available masks outside Japan was the key to the spread of the hobby.

The real advance in Western Kigurumi occurred when Kanakig Studios, in Bankok, Fantesca Design in the US, and Wyu in Singapore, all began making Kigurumi masks about 2004-5 Of the three, I think only Wyu still makes masks for sale.

So to sum things up. Anyone who has a Dolphin or Sigma mask from the early days has become very protective of them, and many people are Jealous, as getting their own has become nearly impossible.

I guess what you need to understand, is that Hobby Kigurumi is not a production line. I mean sure the Pre Cure / Sailor Moon stage shows may have a workshop churning out dozens of masks for the performers to wear, but when it comes to the Hobby side, each mask is essentially commissioned, with custom features. I doubt that even Cici maintains a stock of blank masks waiting for an order to come in.

Hand crafting takes time, and that's never cheap. Most mask makers have 'Day Jobs' so they are not making a living making masks. This compounds the time to delivery.

So yeah, it's hard to get one, especially if you need to wait till you are the next order being produced.

I've always thought there was a cultural aspect as well.

North America does not have much of a mask tradition in theatrical arts. Except for Halloween and Professional mascots ( Sports teams, theme parks.) most american girls would never think of pulling on a mask over their faces.

Anime came to North America about a decade ago, and yet while Kigurumi has a following in Japan, the old saying holds true, "You can't fill a Duck Boat with the number of active hobby performers"

It's clear from this forum, that there are people interested in the Hobby, but it's making them uneasy due to the stigma in North America over dressing up like a girl for any reason.

It depends on the kind of resin used. There are two types of resins commonly used in FRP. In general, polyester resins have stronger fumes when curing than epoxy resins do. Epoxy is also more durable than polyester. However, epoxy is more expensive than polyester.

I use epoxy resin for the inner FRP layer I add to my 3D printed masks (I'll also use it when I start making cast masks using printed masks as patterns, which I am planning to do soon). The stuff I use (West System) doesn't have a particularly strong smell, and the MSDS says that no respirator is normally required and normal building ventilation is usually sufficient (which is unlike with polyester resins that produce very strong fumes requiring the use of a respirator). My masks do have a bit of a persistent epoxy smell but it's quite faint. I'm not sure what resins a lot of other makers use. I do know GKO uses epoxy, and Cici and (AFAIK) Wyu use polyester.
