There was a time when Eiki Shiki’s granddaughter, Komachi Onozuka, put her grandmother in a very awkward position. Like all granddaughters, Komachi thought that her grandmother was the most wonderful grandmother in the whole world. She told her friends that there was nothing the great judge could not do.

One day Komachi and her friends, Tenshi Hinanawi and Kasen Ibaraki, were playing in front of two enormous stone lions that guarded Eiki's gate. Komachi boasted that Eiki's lions were the biggest in all of Yedo. Tenshi, who came from a family of sculptors, replied, “My grandmother makes lions just as big as these.”

“That's nothing,” said Kasen. “My grandmother could make one twice as big if she wanted to.”

“Well if my grandmother wanted to,” replied Tenshi, “she could take a chisel and carve the whole world into a lion.”

Komachi did not know what to say. She knew her grandmother was greater than any of the others, but it was impossible to make a lion bigger than the world. So, determined to have the last word, she boasted that her grandmother was so wonderful that she could make their grandmothers' stone lions come to life.

Kasen and Tenshi hooted with laughter. “No one could do such a thing,” they said.

Angrily, Komachi declared she would prove it to them and dared them to accompany her to see Eiki.

Eiki was an old woman, but she had not forgotten what it was like to be four years old like Komachi. So when her granddaughter came into the house with her two little friends and asked him to prove that she could turn a stone lion into a living animal, Eiki was placed in a very awkward position. The judge was a wise and clever woman, but she was not a magician and could not perform an impossible trick. But she did not wish to admit this, for her granddaughter would appear ridiculous before her friends.

Eiki thought over the matter very carefully, then replied, “Well, it is possible, of course, to bring stone to life, as anyone who has read a fairy tale knows. So, if you bring me the lion which Tenshi's grandmother can carve from the entire world, I will breathe life into it.” Eiki smiled down at the children and silently congratulated herself on her cleverness.

But Komachi was not satisfied. “Honorable Grandmother,” she said, “couldn't you bring to life one of the lions outside of your gate? Then Tenshi and Kasen would be sure to believe me next time I tell them what wonderful things you can do -- especially if you make the lion bite them a little.”

Eiki frowned. “Of course I could do as you ask,” she replied, “but bringing a stone object to life requires an unusual amount of energy, and I am too tired just now.”

Instantly, the judge realized her mistake. The three girls looked at her accusingly. They knew she was making excuses. Komachi looked dejected.

“Very well,” Eiki said. “Let's go look at the lion. Perhaps I am not too tired after all.”

Eiki set out, followed by the three little girls. As they walked, the judge told them the marvelous story of the Chinese stone monkey who came to life. The girls listened, wide-eyed, and by the time they came to the gate where the marble lions stood, all three were quite sure that Eiki really had the power of bringing stone to life.

The judge examined the lion confidently. “A difficult trick,” she said, “but not impossible.” She looked down at the girls. “He certainly is a huge monster, isn't he? I expect he will be very ferocious.”

The three girls began to look worried. “Perhaps we should wait behind a tree while you do the trick,” Komachi suggested.

“Certainly not,” Eiki said firmly. “I am an old woman and do not have enough energy to perform such a miracle alone. I shall need your help. Now say good-bye to one another.”

“Good-bye?” Kasen asked.

“Of course,” Eiki replied. Surely such a monstrous lion will eat all four of us as soon as he comes to life. I hope you all said farewell to everyone at your homes.”

The three little girls looked at the great stone animal in silence. At last Kasen said in a small voice, “If you are really so tired, my lord, perhaps it would be better if we did not bring the lion to life after all.”

“Nonsense!” the judge said. “I must prove to you that I can do the trick, or you will not believe me.”

“I believe you,” Tenshi said quickly.

“So do I,” Kasen added hastily.

“I have always believed you, Grandmother,” Komachi said.

Eiki sighed. “Well, since you all insist,” she said regretfully, “we may just as well return to the house, where I believe Komachi's grandmother may have some sweet cakes for us.” Eiki sighed again and added, “I must admit, I am very disappointed. I had so looked forward to performing the trick. However, disappointments often have a bright side for those who are able to see it.”

Reimu doesn't give a fuck about anything and would rather drink tea and blow people from the sky, but she's bound by the rules to not attack people unless there's an incident.

So she eagerly waits for the next incident, only for it to happen when she's not in the mood.
And yet, despite how much she'd like to stay home and lie around, she still stands and go to save Mega-City- I mean Gensokyo- from whatever danger is creeping on it.
Insane youkai, false moons, demons from another world, mass possessions, Oni reign of terror, supernatural, deadly fog, they're all after Gensokyo, willingly or not. And Reimu is waiting for them.

Reimu isn't the miko Gensokyo deserves. But she's the miko they have.
