I spent most of my time directly in front of the centre of the stage, just 2 or 3 rows from the front, sandwiched between two fat guys. It was amazing. The girls gave it their all and Akatsuki was a real highlight from so close.
I saw someone on reddit say they thought the crowd was a little lethargic, and maybe I experienced that too because between me and the front there was no one jumping and headbangying, that didn't stop me though. I can't really compare the forum to Hammerstein because the difference between being over to the side and just a few feet from the front in the middle is so different. Hammerstein seemed shorter bug maybe because they only did 1 kami band solo and only one encore song (IDZ of course).
As for set list, I can't be sure as I have shit for brains.
Best gig ever? The forum was my first babymetal gig so will always have a special place in my heart, I think I'd I can avoid being smothered by american freedom rolls at Brixton and find some bros to rock out with at the front then we could have a contender.

Concert was pretty cool, but I had to wait in line in front of semi-autistic insufferable manchildren. Everyone else I met was pretty normal(I saw plenty of legitimate neckbeards that I assumed were from /jp/) and I was one person away from getting sucked into the mosh at the end. I was in the middle of the general assembly, though I was tall enough to see everything on stage. I was impressed by the energy of the performers, not just the girls. Glad I persevered through the wait time and weirdos.

This may differ among fans, but I personally find I have mixed feelings toward most typical metal music. I really enjoy the instrumental portion, but the vocals for a lot of bands just doesn't interest me. Babymetal combines an instrumental style I like with a vocal style I like, which is what makes them so enjoyable. The dancing on stage is something of a bonus on top of that, and really makes for an interesting and entertaining stage presence.

I can see how that might be interpreted as being "artificially combined", but I'm of the opinion the combination of genres makes for a uniquely enjoyable musical style.

I was on the balcony because I wanted to avoid the inevitable mosh pit and everything else that comes with being on the floor. Managed to get seats right up front and had a great view for the entire concert. It was crowdsurfers' paradise at the Forum show, I was at the front and saw some people go like 4 or 5 times during the 3 song encore. The bouncers at the stage were grand and just helped you to your feet and let you go rejoin the crowd a bit to the side of the stage.

Now O2 Arena seems to have pretty nazi no-fun-allowed rules about surfing and moshpits even, basically you get no warning just straight out boot from the venue with no re-entry. I'm worried how strict they are about enforcing it cos I wanted to go surfing...

is there ever a real chance that the girls just tell their live band to fuck off, reason being, so they can (potentially) take up an interest in actually playing the music they're singing and dancing to?

I really hate to think this way, and I don't want to, but....Babymetal has seemingly become a mediocre shell of what they used to be, and what they have the very real potential to be...a legit good band.

Back in the day, Babymetal was a clear cut poppy techo-esque sounding band with the Babybone instrument players in addition to their theatrics and sound and light effects that had metal elements that they didn't really unleash until they *started to* become big.

Exceptions are Headbanger and Ijime Dame Zettai because those were pretty early too if you want to count those as pre-viral songs.

Anyway, the point Im getting at is...I'd really like to see them pick up the instruments that their live band plays (skillfully, mind you...their band is great, as far as being musically talented.)

If they really want to follow in the footsteps and continue to play alongside the great metal bands of this and the previous generation, and want to be taken seriously as a draw on large fucking stadium tier venue stages, then I'd really like to think that at some point, they'll think about actually playing the music they've been skipping around to for the past 3 years.

What is this even.

They used to be a subunit of Sakura Gakuin, a gimmick, a joke almost. The same way that other subunits of Sakura Gakuin will sing songs about hamburgers or tennis while dressed up as chefs and tennis players.

The girls of babymetal are nothing more and nothing less than singers & dancers. That's all they've been doing on a professional level for their short teenaged lives.

The Kami Band members on the other hand have been playing instruments professionally in rock & metal bands for nearly as long as the girls have been alive.

To have the live band fuck off, as you said, and have the girls take over the instruments would be mathematically impossible for one thing. It's played as 4-piece and there are only 3 girls in babymetal.

That also means that they wouldn't be performing their dance routines while being tied down to a drum set or a bass or guitar. You may not sound like a fan of it, but a huge part of Babymetal's appeal is the fact that they do dance around on stage to metal, and a lot of fans have memorized their dance routines by heart. They're not trying to be a generic metal band nor do they want to.

Leave the music to the musicians, that only makes sense, plus none of the girls WANT to be banging out a drum solo. I know that Moa is learning to play the guitar on her own time so maybe eventually she might be able to have a song of her own where it's just her & the band but besides that she's not about to replace Takayoshi Ohmura.

They've already played sold-out Olympic-sized stadiums btw. Picture unrelated.

The original "babymetal" was a gimmick all within itself. That's how they should have stayed. The techo/metal element stage show band, with Babybones as their band. At that time, everyone already knew that they weren't actually playing the instruments, but that was part of the whole show. One big stage theatric. It's just unfortunate that they were at their best when they were playing small ass club venues in Japan while they were still heavily pertaining to Sakura Gakuin at the same time. Babymetal just so happened to be a project that became successful.

But now, as you said, they are indeed playing large venues, and all over the world...alongside bands like Slayer and Motorhead and Anthrax. These are bands, as mentioned, that have been on a professional stadium level for years....just as Babymetal's current live band has been.

I get the fact that their dance routines is a big part of the performance, but Babymetal wouldnt be Babymetal without the band...or, I should say, their current band.

...Yes. Some die hard folks have memorized the dance moves and can dance along to them and that is impressive. But the fact is, they've got the world by the fucking balls, and they're playing alongside the (mentioned above) metal bands when their live band is doing all the music work for them.

There are tons of metal singers that do only just that. Meshuggah, Cannibal Corpse, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, System of A Down, Judas Priest, Slipknot, Iron Maiden, etc. Bands both new-ish and old, they have a guy whose job is to sing the songs, not to play any instruments.


This is the exact same thing, except that there's one main vocalist & two back up singers - and they know how to dance.


As far as I'm concerned the overall babymetal sound is exactly still the same. They had only 3 new songs on their album: Gimme Chocolate was your regular fun techno-pop-metal mix, 4 no uta was essentially iine with reggae instead of electronic dance music and Akumu No Rondo was just another Akatsuki.

They haven't even released a full proper album yet, wait a while before you start lamenting how they sold out or lost their roots.

Well for some shows sometimes people are there really only to see the opening acts and don't want to miss them. That was the case for Babymetal in Heavy MTL, they were literally the first band to play on that stage that day, and I assume Sonisphere as well.

For the other shows, like the one in NYC where there is no opening act, it's moreso about people REALLY wanting to be as close to the front as possible, like literally chest-on-barricade, or wanting good seats.


Like you said though, it's real easy to make you way to the front of a crowd at a metal or punk show. Circle pits happen, crowd surfing happens, people who took too many drugs pass out, there were many times where I just walked into a show halfway through after it started and within minutes I was a couple of bodies away from being chest-to-barricade.

I guess that doesn't really apply to babymetal because there's no opening act, moshing & drug use isn't as heavy, and their set isn't long enough to warrant someone already standing at the front having to leave halfway through.


I guess it also maybe has to do with the wishful thinking that Babymetal, or whatever band you're seeing, will drive up in their tour bus and be like HEY YOU'VE BEEN SITTING THERE FOR HOURS, YOU'RE THE BEST FAN EVER, COME ON IN AND JOIN THE PARTY
