But.... how much does Maria really believe? EP6 drones on and on about the nature of magic, specifically that it is just a cover up for the method to produce a result. Ange's has a discussion with Ryu's self-insert in the meta-meta-metaverse about how the witch side uses red to protect that secret, but they can't do that safely if they don't know the facts or can invent senarios where the result was obtained with a naturalistic method (otherwise, the witch will not be able to construct the red truth behind them without logic error should the human side get to close). So, if Maria did not know the (or at least some) truth about how the candy got in the cup, then how was she using red, and why did she know when to stop?

Then, Maria abandons the magic and Black Witch shit pretty quickly at the end of EP2. Sure, that could be said to be Beato giving her a happy end, but the piece can't do what the real Maria would never do. There is also evidence, via her diary, where she would describe miserable, lonely days, then tack magic on the end to lift her spirits.

I don't think that Maria believed in magic a whole lot more than Yasu herself.

But let's not be so quick to judge Yasu as a pedo. She had a very sad life and Maria was the only one who didn't treat her like scum or use her, and could understand her pain. i just finished my reread of the first game, moving onto Chiru now.
For the whole Episode 4 I was telling myself I remember why it was one of the worst, with endless Ange sections and Maria memories before it was really shown that there was no magic at all in her deluded life.

But then the ending. Those songs.
Victima Propiciatoria, Mortal Stampede, dir, Endless Nine

It's like they told dai to make the best he could out of everything and dumped all of his best stuff one after the other while the climax kept rolling. It was enough to wipe away all the negativity I had about the episode and make me lie awake thinking of how great it went.
Too bad about the false ending.

I think Lambda nailed it with that bully thing harder than Shion did Satoko's fingers. Bern may have escaped the logic error, but she left her heart behind. She's so damaged that she is unable to interact with others as equals. She always thinks that someone is trying to abuse her, so she lashes out. Even when she doesn't think that, she feels compelled to assert her power anyway. For instance, Beato. Beato was just a pathetic witch trying to romance a guy by murdering his family. Sure, she may not have had it the worst, but Bern took it as an extreme offense. She was the one who hurt the most. So she took it on her self to punish her. She was so pissed by the audacity that someone else might be sad, that she ran to someone she hated to get help. I also think that Erika had a very good point in EP6 when she noted that her beloved master was just another delusional witch running from the truth. That's related to another thing that Lambda said about Bern. She is the Witch Who Waits for Miracles. And that's exactly what Rika did. She gave up trying to combat her fate and just waited until coincidence (and possibly divine intervention) saved her. I was reading and, reaching the sixth game, I wondered.
Virgilia says in the fifth game that all the clues have been given already in the first four games, and that reading those you can reach the truth in any moment.

Does it mean there truly is everything you need to discover the truth of the island until then, or is it the same as the epitaph, which is technically 'solvable' without being given all the elements, but requires leaps of logic comparable to solving a sudoku board in which you're only given four numbers?
I wanted to actually sit down and try to think about things, like when the detective calls up everyone and says he can announce the culprit, but first I would like to know if it's an effort worth doing.

By the way, by possible I don't mean "Knowing the solution, you can see the path to it"

What I'm saying, borrowing the game's own words, is that what they did was the equivalent of being told that the place you're looking is in the world, so you take an atlas and try every single place that exists until one works.

Of course, they had the luxury of having the place being restricted by some conditions, but it was still pretty crazy, enough that the resolution was akin to throwing solutions until one stuck. Especially considering that even once you get the key to the golden land the rest of the journey is arduous to make if you're not a character who can actually traverse physical places.

While solutions for the games can be figured out if you're used to the genre and if you're creative with wording (something I'll admit I'm not smart enough to do without enough details), the epitaph alone I don't believe was properly solvable until at least towards the second half you're given the hometown, or at least the writing on the chapel is explicitly said, instead of occulted for no reason.

It's a writing on an arch in plain sight. Not saying right away and precisely what was written on it was just a narrative trick, not actual difficulty.

It's implied multiple times in all the games where the goats appear that the goats are supposed to represent a certain way of thinking, especially during the resolution of the logic error. Is that something easily explainable without giving away the solution?

It's part of the truth, but the truth, The Truth, and what actually happened are not necessarily the same.

That's a tricky question. The universe and the place of reality and the various meta levels in it were always a bit underdetermined, but EP8 removes any foundation from which to sort it out. There's only interpretations, and a lot of stuff doesn't mesh with the anti-fantasy interpretation that you are given a glimpse of. There's bullshit with Bern trolling everyone by pointing out the subjectivity of the red that can basically be used to prove anything (``I didn't lie, I just redefined what `not' means and forgot to tell you!''). It also pushes the idea that everyone gets to decide their own truth, so you can go ahead and believe Gohdatrice and you can probably quote enough tricks in EP8 to justify it.

It's actually not so bad. I had fun. You may not be happy with it, but it does leave avenues for discussion that Higurashi closed, for better or worse.

Yes. That's the source of Endless Magic. It closes the catbox and allows for many tales to speculate on what ``really'' happened those two days when Rokkenjima was cut off from the world. If the island hadn't been blown up, the police would have found the bodys and determined what had happened. As it is, only Maria's jaw was found and confirmed to be her, so she is the only one who is actually confirmed to have died (presumably, the police have detective's authority and Ryu wouldn't lie to the reader by having them lie, right?).

Maybe. Bern confirmed in red that it contained the truth, but latter bullshit her way out of it. When she confirmed it in EP7, Ange cut her off before she could end the sentence in a period and tore herself apart in horror. In EP8 she explains to Ange that that truth was referencing the EP7 gameboard. Later, Ange reads the diary and kills herself again. If it was really what was shown in EP7, why did she react so poorly to being shown something that she had already believed and was shown in red? If Bern convinced her that it wasn't true in reality, then why is Ange so stupid? Ange should know not to trust Bern. That would be like the twentieth time she betrayed her. And yet Maria is called the retard. You can also interpret Ange's red ``none of my family came home'' to mean Eva died as well. Various other things can show that Eva\Ange's world isn't prime either. As said, EP8 takes away a lot of the foundation.

Whoa, watch out for this advice. EP7 doesn't solve every single individual question. It does, however, give away all of the main secrets and "core" behind the whole game.

It is akin to rising up the curtain in the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz," and showing the man behind the curtain.

If you want to stop and thank and figure things out by yourself, for god's sake, stop before reading EP7.

Also, as to the difficulty: it's hard-core difficulty, but all the clues are three, from EP 1 through 6.

True, the red truth is subjective, also due to Knox's 9th, but precisely because of that I struggle to believe Ange would be crestfallen about Eva not coming back, so much as to include her in the definition of 'family'
