Don't you dare diss tsukumogami. They're hands down the best youkai out there.

See, most of the youkai exist for the sole purpose of dicking with you. There are youkai that make you trip and fall while you're walking at night. There are youkai that manifest within toilets and stroke your buttocks while you're doing your business. There are youkai that cut your lines and nets while you're fishing and these that sneak into your house, eat your food and spit into what they couldn't manage to stuff down (one of the youkai that do this takes the form of a flock of sparrows, so maybe that kitchen-invading heron thing had some truth into it). There's a goddamn tree that bleeds like a fire hose when you try to cut it. There's a youkai of which entire gig is infiltrating your bedroom and licking your ceiling, leaving its slobber to ooze all over you while you're asleep. Youkai are dicks.

Tsukumogami, though, just want to be appreciated. There's a jar tsukumogami that contains infinite fucking booze, there's an old gong that transforms into a huge ass crocodile to better protect its temple, there's an animated fireman's baton that acts as a living fire alarm in an era where all the houses are wooden. They're also the most relatable youkai, since who doesn't have some object or another that kept servicing them reliably over all these years? Tsukumogami are childhood friends whose desires to be with their masters have grown so strong that they've developed cute little girl bodies to better please them.

See where I'm going with this? If you hang out with tsukumogami, you'll have infinite food and drink, and nobody will mess with you because anything in your house can turn into a monster and totally fuck their shit up. Burglars? Nope, try to get past the fucking gong shark first. There's also the story of an entire damn house becoming a tsukumogami and traveling between towns, so with enough luck and perseverance, you can live in Baba Yaga's chicken-legged hut.

Sounds good, if it's a cute girl. I can see some potential in her.

I'd first forbid her to speak and keep her mouth taped shut because no one wants to hear that stupid sutra shit. Next, I'd start hitting her. If she fell over, she'd have 10 seconds to get back up. If she didn't stand in time then the beating would triple. I'd begin aiming for the face and kicking her as well. We'd continue until 20 minutes passed or until she fell unconscious. If she seems like she might make it the 20 minutes, I'll add in a weapon like a whip, a bat, a taser, brass knuckles, etc. I'd do this once a day and if, after the third or fourth session of this, she still isn't able to make it the 20 minutes without falling unconscious, I'd add mental abuse in there, too. She'd had some sort of wooden fish with her like Kogasa has an umbrella, right? Maybe a hair accessory or a necklace. I'd hang the wooden fish over a fire and slowly lower it if she isn't able to get back up in time. If she makes the twenty minutes through sheer determination, then I'd extend the time another 10 minutes. If she makes it 30 minutes, then she gets her fish back, even if it is all black and charred. I'd even start allowing her to speak, but only when spoken to. If she fails, though, then I'd have no more use for her.

Raiko is strong in the same way that Cirno is strong, she's exceptional among tsukumogami but her power doesn't matter much in the great scheme of things. See her ISC appearance, she's a middling boss alongside Benben and Yatsuhashi. But she's wily, and she's one of these rare Touhou characters who work towards a coherent goal instead of stirring up trouble for personal entertainment, and that's why she's an admirable girl.

See, when Remilia or Yuyuko or Eirin undertake a personal project, they handle it in such a flashy way that it attracts undue attention, and they eventually end up fumbling it because of that. Raiko, though? She remains low-key all the way through, works out a way to retain her existence, and shares it with her other tsukumogami out of nothing but concern for her fellow tools. Rather than the powerhouses that are the other final/extra bosses, she's a kindhearted elder sister who knows her limitations, but will still do her best to find ways around them so that she can support you.

Her body-hijacking plan has some great potential for other tsukumogami, too. Raiko, as a drum, got rhythm game players as her source of power - so if you were, say, an old grandfather clock, could you sneak into the NIST and steal their cesium clock to obtain the ultimate timekeeping ability? Can a half-broken kameosa go on an Indiana Jones-like adventure to excavate Pair Dadeni, the cauldron on which the Holy Grail was based, and use it as its power source? Could an ancient scroll of public records hook itself up to Twitter and draw strength from every popular tweet and hashtag it creates? The possibilities are endless.

I also like how, when all is said and done, Raiko is just a lost woman trying to carve out her place in the world. She's both strong and vulnerable in a way that makes her cute.

Every Touhou power is worded vaguely enough to be overpowered. But they don't have complete mastery over everything that pertains to their power, so you have Rumia creating a moderately sized ball of darkness instead of snuffing out the sun at a whim, or Cirno giving you a nasty chill instead of dropping an Ice-9 and stopping all motion everywhere.

Conversely, if you're strong enough, your weak-sounding power becomes monstrous, hence why Reimu can float out of reality and Yukari can do whatever she damn well pleases.

This is a classic power interpretation mistake, in extrapolating a 2hu's power on one scale to an exponentially greater one. Raiko cannot cause heart attacks and "manipulate everything", any more than Cirno's ability enables her to freeze all the water in the world. Their abilities only extend as far as a certain range, and it's baseless to slippery-slope them into ridiculous power levels.

The problem is that abilities are self-reported. Even Akyu says that Futo's ability is basically Shinto, but she doesn't recognize it as such and there's nothing that the rest of Gensokyo can do about it, because you name your own ability like how you name your own spellcards.

Raiko's ability might be limited to music even though it sounds like it can extend to a bunch of other things. But Reisen probably can cause earthquakes with enough juice, since we've actually seen her use her wavelength thing that way.

>> No.12625091

>>12625034
These are good general guidelines, though there probably are exceptions as well. "Must be handmade" applies to pretty much all old objects, since mass production wasn't a thing back then, so how modern objects perform is not really something we know. Also, the objects must be old and worn-out, but they don't need to be in current use, one of the reasons that tsukumogami happen is that a well-used object gets replaced a shiny new counterpart and comes to life in order to join back/take revenge on its master. Think Brave Little Toaster. Lastly, while the object needs to be fairly old and a century is the generally agreed number, pretty much any old object probably qualifies, regardless of age. If you want a specific counterexample, there's a ritual to turn a mirror into a demon after only 15 years.

A fourth requirement, invented by the internet as a part of new era folklore, is that tsukumogami fear electricity, and won't be formed from an object that uses or was exposed to manmade sources of it. Raiko must be especially respected among her fellow tsukumogami, since she's conquered their greatest weakness.

Marisa took it out because there would be a huge commotion if a new youkai formed in the middle of the village, which kind of makes you wonder what she and Reimu will do if Kosuzu ever crosses the threshold and becomes a youkai-spewing scroll tsukumogami (you can do this, there's a story about a biwa player fusing with his biwa and becoming a youkai).

That little bit at the end of the dream chapter was the hottest thing to come out of Tsugumomo, and that's saying quite something for a series with full frontal nudity all over the place.

But back on topic: Would you want to receive a handjob from Yatsuhashi while she's still wearing her fingerpicks? She's a living musical instrument, so maybe even the picks would feel warm and soft to the touch.

The thought that she could pluck your penis to orgasm is very arousing.

This. What makes Raiko nice is that she's a dynamic character. She doesn't remain in her already-established power base and cause a ruckus once in a while to amuse herself, she's actively fighting for the freedom of household objects.

She's also fairly weak compared to the youkai bighats, and has no support beyond her own cunning and similarly powerless tsukumogami. But she still tries her best to build a place for her and her fellow objects to take it easy, and that's what makes her cute. Stick with her, and she'll look out for you no matter what.

She's one of the best onee-san characters in Touhou.

Reimu says she's pretty good for an object, but not exactly up to par as a full youkai (Marisa and Sakuya both comment that she's pretty good for a tool, too). She's definitely weaker compared to monsters like Suika, Yuugi, Yuuka, Eiki or Yukari, or the older youkai like Remilia and Aya.

Besides, you don't need to be all that powerful to be a Final/Extra boss. Koishi is a satori who can't even do the satori thing, Shinmyoumaru is just some dwarf that Reimu keeps in a hamster cage.

Myouren's alms-bowl should definitely have been a tsukumogami. Even as a begging bowl, it flew from door to door trying to collect alms for its poor master. Give it a maid outfit, a stone bowl hat and a little girl body and you're set.

Its loss was also what triggered the flying silo incident, that happened because some parishioner forgot the thing in his silo, so it couldn't go back to Myouren and deliver him food. It tried to fly until it hit against the silo's roof, and kept going on until it tore the building's foundations and made the entire thing fly. The silo was left hanging in the air until a very hungry, very angry Myouren left his temple to recover it.

He still left the silo flying, though.

That one time these shitty Americans got their filthy paws on the moon and tried to claim that it was theirs.

This picture gives me little shivers. It's really making this shitty workday better.

>Burglars? Nope, try to get past the fucking gong shark first.

That whole post is great, but I just cracked up at this. HERE COMES THE GONG SHARK, GIT FUCKED!

Agreed. So glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. That most artists are drawing kokoro's breasts like that - plus the outfit that seems to accentuate her waist, plus the red hair, plus the neutral expression that just draws more attention to her intense gaze... aaahhnn~

All this good art and great taste. Thank you /jp/.

This is also fanon bullshit. Go play UFO again; Sanae is actually no more unpleasant (in fact, probably less unpleasant) than Reimu or Marisa. Sanae B's post battle with Kogasa is the closest any playable character ever comes to apologizing.

Not entirely. The way she gets such a kick out of youkai hunting makes her seem a little sadistic. But, no, she's not that mean.
