Hey /jp/.

I got a couple hundred bucks from a relative for my birthday, and since all of my bills/budget/etc. have been paid and taken care of, I'm thinking of treating myself to something.

Weaboo-related item. What should I get? I was thinking Persona 3, since I've been dying to get it but haven't... well, had the time or money to nab it. Or maybe a Jap mahjong game--I say "jap" game because there aren't any Amerikkkan mahjong games that play with Nip rules.

In before Slowking.jpg.

NEET Patchy is always relevant.

>> No.1256287

Why slowking ? I don't see anything you've done late ...

The only use you have for emotions as a an investor is to predict how the masses will react.
Acting not emotionally but logically is the only way to make a buck.
And I'm talking about doing research on what companies and fields you're planning to invest in, which is the correct way to choose where to place your money.

Well, traditionally, investment is something most people used to do, in the past, having stock in companies was what most people did to insure their retirement, that was hundreds of years ago though, and now, people are trying to make investment look much harder than it really is.
As an individual with limited resources (for now), it isn't outright possible to make a living out of investment yet,
you must keep in mind that investment on people's scale is something that you do on a scale of years, you don't do day trading.
It isn't something especially hard to do but you will have to get yourself a bit of knowledge about where you plan to put your money.
I'd say it's a good way to spend your spare money, you must know that one does not need huge capital to make investments and that some shares start as low as a few cents.
But you have to keep in mind that investment is a long term thing, don't expect returns by tomorrow and be cautious about where you invest.
But it's still a better idea to invest money than to leave it in banks.
So, yeah, you could most assuredly do it, just be sure to keep an eye on your investments and do a bit of research beforehand.

I don't. If you need the money don't invest them. I've made my own portfolio on Google Finance, to see how good I'd fare in the stock market. In the past 4-5 weeks 75% of my investments have risen 10-35%.

My goal is to save 5000 USD, (I have 1000 now) and start investing them. If I can achieve the same rate of success in the real life, I'd probably make enough money to eat better and buy nicer clothes, but nothing more than that.

If you're referring to me asking the guy what he's investing in, I'm not trying to copy him, I'm very satisfied with my returns, it's just that as someone studying finance, I have an interest in knowing what people like to invest in, just to have a little idea for myself of what they can make in my opinion.
Essentially, I'm interested because there are so many investors selling their ROW shares and getting american ones without knowing why america has been getting a little better (temporarily) or why the other countries have been getting a little worse ( temporarily too, because of raises of interest rates in important countries, a sign of actual health on the long term in my opinion.)

Probably safest to invest in an index of a large market that you think won't utterly crash in the next ten to twenty years; S&P 500, for instance.

You want to put money into such an account and leave it there, at a minimum, for five years or so. DON'T pull out all your money whenever the stock market is having hiccups.

I invest in everything that isn't oil and gas producers. I follow a set of rules, which I've learned from reading a book by Warren Buffett's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Buffett)) finance teacher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Graham).).

1: I never invest in companies that lose money.

2: I look for shares traded at low multiples. I prefer companies with low debt levels which are traded below their net asset value. I also prefer stocks that aren't too pricey compared to their income.

3: I look for stocks that has gotten beaten down due to overreaction. Ciena (ticker code: CIEN) is down over 75% since august due to falling revenues and profit. Falling profits and revenues are never a positive thing, but mostly it's just temporary, and Ciena is still making huge profits compared to their market value. The company also has short term investments and cash worth 1.7 billion dollar - 54% more than their current market value.

To me, there's no reason why company that makes steady profits should be traded lower than the value of its cash and short term investments.

Well, because you only learn about the economy in the papers, you probably don't know that the actual tendency for investors is to invest in america, this has to do with the fact that the ROW has published worst than expected growths ( related to China, Russia, etc increasing their interest rates to fight against inflation) and the US economy being temporarily good because so much money has been pumped ( unhealthily) into the economy, the low dollar, etc.
At any rate, for a pro, it's now the in thing to put money in the US.
But you should buy Europe or China while people are scared of them.
The US economy is having a temporary rebound for now, although the markets have been BAD lately everywhere.
