I never really figured out Lion's deal. He or she mentions a complex about their androgyny, implying which would usually be because it's outside of their control, so maybe the issue is genetic in nature (considering the nature of their birth, not surprising). But there is a line in the VN that imply that Yasu's defect was caused by their genitals being mutilated in the accident. Not sure how to reconcile the two.

I found the translation with the patch quite acceptable.

And yes, Higurashi is great and you should definitely play it along with Umineko. Higanbana as well (which this screenshot is from). You could play Higanbana until MangaGamer re-releases Higurashi.

Exactly, if the original Italian-Nazi Beatrice had been the culprit it would have violated Knox's 5th. I would even go so far as to argue that applies to Gohda too, because he is the biggest "outsider" and we knew very little about him originally.

Ironically Gohda is probably one of the most innocent pieces on the board throughout the games. I don't think he was an intentionally accomplice even once.

Beatrice was never there.
Battler never solved anything. That person is meta Battler which explains why he showed love to Beatrice, He wanted to offer something that didn't happen in the real world in his story. Namely, bringing Beatrice outside the island. But being the fickle witch, it's simply impossible.

It's all meta which you can understand by simply focusing on Battler's action and they become obvious.

For Battler to escape, he needs to talk to Beatrice at the end of the match. After he is unable to confess, Beatrice just fucks off and tells Battler the underground submarine location and that he has a limited time to escape.

Battler knows nothing about Beatrice, so there's no way he would even think about bringing her with him or be all lovey dobbey like he is in that fantasy. That only happens because it's piece Battler/Tohya writing what happened but by including Beatrice leaving but with a metaphor.

It's simply, Battler has motion sickness, it's funny that this joke actually has a purpose in the plot.
Battler goes on a motor boat, (beatrice tells him to do this but he likely does it himself) he closes one eye, then two eyes, then opens them and then falls.
Beatrice is said to fall off and to drag him but it's likely Battler trying to grab the gold lingot and fucking up.

I prefer to think that the island simply exploded at that exact moment and gave shockwaves at the moment he was trying to get the gold lingot that jumped off and he was knocked out.
It's stupid to assume someone disregarding basic survival principles and purposefully drowning if Beatrice really was there.

Also, you have to remember that this happened at midnight, not in the morning. And that the rain was still ongoing.
Even in Ep 4 when Battler was able to roam around before Beatrice blew up the island, Battler was still in the rain.
The whole ''it randomly turned beautiful and the boat turned into a rowing love boat'' is completely silly.

Lack of oxygen actually destroys a terrible amount of memory and brain.
It's honestly a miracle Battler would survive the depths of the sea, in the middle of a storm and land on shore.

And concerning whether or not Battler died, Ep 4 is a good indicator of what happened.
Battler was thinking while drowning and, in my eyes, solved what happened on Prime, which is when he's trying to grab Beatrice, but drowns, realizing he solved it but is dying with the answers too late.
Had he solved it on the island, something might have changed, but here he is, dying at the bottom of the ocean.

If you're committed to reading the whole WTC franchise, start with Higurashi.

If you're not sure about it and need to be convinced of it's awesomeness, start with Umineko and go back to Higurashi later.

For normal people without otaku-ish interests, I recommend reading Umineko first because it's more mature, polished, an overall better work, and has less fanservice that would turn them off.

Higurashi doesn't hit it's stride until at least the 3rd episode, IMHO. If you're not an established fan of VNs, you might struggle through the start.

Unfortunately, Umineko does spoil some parts of Higurashi in a round-about way. But I read all of Higurashi while knowing the "big solution," and still enjoyed it tons. So it's not like those spoilers will 100% ruin your enjoyment, though they will remove some of it.

I've actually already played Higanbana first and second night twice over now...

I'd heartily recommend them both.

Higanbana has a much smaller scope than Umineko, but it's still good. It's more like "07th Expansion does The Twilight Zone." I wish he'd make a 3rd or 4th Higanbana game, because the setting and how youkai relate to the human world (spelled out in the last chapter of 2nd night) is quite interesting.

The first half of RGD Season 1 is slow, but halfway through that it ratchets up, and stays awesome through the rest of the series.

The closest I ever got to meeting someone else who liked WTC was in a university Japanese (that I failed, which dropped my GPA so low that I was suspended; thanks Japan!). Apparently the anime club had screened Higurashi, but none understood it. There was a black girl who kept telling them 'the blue haired girl is very important and was the one making them come back to life'. It was annoying.

Umineko just isn't very accessible for most people.
I know someone who's really into murder mysteries, which Umineko seemed to be at its core. But the logic battles, magic witches throwing lightning everywhere and meta-world would completely throw them off balance.
Umineko is like some weird mixture of classic murder mystery detectives and battle shounen manga. Which makes it very difficult to achieve mainstream popularity, because, for want of better words, it's just so fucking crazy.

I have introduced Umineko to quite many friends actually, but only one finished reading it and others are moving slow as fuck. It's fun to discuss in person. Hardest part is to keep your poker-face when someone hits close with their speculation. Or when people don't hit anywhere at all.

On the other hand, the 80~ his spent reading Umineko's 1.2M over eight volumes went by a lot faster than the days reading, say, Stephen King 1.3M word.Dark Tower series spread over eight books.
