No, these things are powered by fears like "fear of cramped places" and "fear of dark" or belief in general trends like "any cop who tries to tackle a dangerous conflict a day before his retirement will die in it" or "the light is never green when you really have to hurry". You have to remove these from the public consciousness to get rid of them. Electricity kind of wrecked their game because it mostly removed the reason to fear the night, and yamabiko are facing an existence crisis because the reason behind echoes are now widely known.

If you killed one of the things, it'd probably come back good as new as long as people feared or believed in whatever it was representing. I like the American Gods approach to it:

>Even for my kind, pain still hurts. If you move and act in the material world, then the material world acts on you. Pain hurts, just as greed intoxicates and lust burns. We may not die easy and we sure as hell don't die well, but we can die. If we're still loved and remembered, something else a whole lot like us comes along and takes our place and the whole damn thing starts all over again. And if we're forgotten, we're done.

Yeah they probably die for real (but it's still hard because they've got huge resistances to physical attacks) and if people still believe in that type of youkai, something that looks like them comes out after a while. Hence the American Gods comparison.

But you don't convince everyone that you killed the thing with your excellent rhetoric or whatever, you use objects that people believe will kill them dead. Then they go away/die because that's what their legend tells them to do, like how sardine heads and garlic repel vampires and you can kill them with the behead-stake-bury in crossroads combo.

These descriptions together seem to best match up with what I'm thinking: Fairies would use food as an auxiliary source of energy in lieu of their active elements for duties such as a long trek away from their territory in order to spread their element's influence, for instance. This would explain why they could metabolize food in the first place, despite at a glance being seemingly sustained by natural power alone.

Oooo, I can write a story:

"Though an infrequent occurrence, occasionally humans from other regions of the Outside World other then Japan find themselves gapped into the border for one reason or another. Unable to communicate with the local populace and usually even less equipped to deal with their situation then other outsiders, it is almost certain that these humans are consumed before they can settle in the Human Village, who might not even accept them for being a foreigner.

Occasionally however, when lost in the woods, these humans manage to find the areas where the fairies roam, and are the subject of pranks. Where most humans would react with hostility, these outsiders instead act with curiosity, and will pursue the fairies until they reach their gathering point. Sometimes, these outsiders happen to share a language with the fey, and are able to converse with them; In these cases, they'll ask for shelter in return for working under the servitude of the fairies, offering their superior strength and intelligence in return for being able to rest in the lands of the fey at night when the youkai roam.

Whenever fairies accept these terms, the human ends up becoming a wandering warrior of sorts; A Hedge Knight, sworn to defend fairy maidens from those who would wish harm against them, among other more menial tasks, such as physical labor and prankster accomplices.

Probably not. Fairies are born from nature so they don't need males.

>> No.12548066

>>12547984
>>12547504

Certain races of fairy such as leprechauns and far darrig are traditionally ONLY male, and assuming the nature analogy works on them, likely represent more exotic elements such as gold or probability, on top of things such as lacking wings. Otherwise, they seem to function on the same principles as their female kin; limited intelligence (the far darrig is described as having a single-digit IQ), a hankering to do pranks and cause mischief, and being small weedy humanoids.

Since fairies reproduce using nature though, them being male would mostly be just a personality modifier: they still wouldn't reproduce if you got them into a room (indeed, they likely wouldn't recognize the significance of their gender beyond their immediate physical and mental differences such as no wings
), though you might be able to get them to recognize each other as kin and form clanish relationships similar to how the three fairies of light and other groups of fae operate.

I have a theory as to why fairies are dumb to the point of innocence on top of being segregated by sex: Since they can't easily die, them being able to reproduce sexually would ultimately be counterproductive as their status of nature avatars as they would out-reproduce everything else on Earth, causing an ecological collapse. Hence, they're restricted to increasing their numbers to a set limit by spreading their element across the face of the world: That ensures that there will always be enough of their element to support the population, as well as means there will never be too many fairies of one element, as they tend to go out of commission as their element loses strength. It keeps nature balanced.

Or you know, the generic idea of a fairy is being a rapresentation/avatar of Nature, and since Nature is seen as a female you know the drill. It's not to be excluded there could be male fairies anyway, we've seen a male kappa in SoPM for example.

Is there any japanese equivalent to fairies?
Like small, magical and maybe invisible individuals that'd appreciate you putting a bowl of milk/honey somewhere to thank them for their work/protecting your house or something?

As far as I know, it's mostly a european thing (considering the americas were full of fake indian during those times), and we have a hugeass variety of fairies species, whose descriptions/traits evolved with time.

Actually it probably does, Tam Lin got pretty fairy-ish after he got captured by fairies.

Man, that ballad rocked. I might be misremembering things, but I think the plot goes like this: A tsundere fairy queen ("S-stupid mortal! It's not like I l-like you or a-anything! We just n-need to sacrifice one of y-your kind every seven years, t-that's all") kidnaps a young man called Tam Lin, who joins the fairy troop but will be thrown to the brimstone pit in his seventh year unless he can find a replacement sacrifice. His childhood sweetheart hears this, gets real pissed that some uppity fairy bitch is stealing her childhood friend, crashes the fairy banquet, beats the shit out of the queen in a contest of wits and princess carries Tam Lin out of the fairy realm.

That girl's balls are rivaled only by Gerda, who as you know reacts to the kidnapping of her childhood friend by raiding the snow queen's castle with an army of angels, killing off all her servants, burning out the troll mirror shard with her sheer hotbloodedness and storming out of the place with sword in one hand and boyfriend in other to ride towards the sunset on a reindeer.

Read the written works. Eirin is well liked by everyone in the village because she's open to cure any disease local medicine can't cure, also she doesn't pressure the patients with the fees, she gently waits for the person to gather the money when they're able to.
Also Reisen goes often to the village to sell medicine. Actually humans asked the Eientei to don't send non human being to do the job, so Reisen even has to conver herself in order to access the village. Despire that Reisen likes helping them and even solved a rat incident with an invention of her own.
