Never seen this guy/car in person, but he used to be part of a itasha group in NorCal. He rolls by himself now though.

Anyway, I'll bite. I only recently started and design/cut/apply my own vinyl, along with body work (because racecar). I'm done with my rear end; sides and front end by the end of the year. Hopefully by then I've gotten good enough at applying vinyl (since, believe me, it is definitely not as easy as it looks) and have a full-wrap style done by then.

The hood Marisa was a test run and my first try applying a vinyl that large. It didn't go exactly as planned. But hey, that's the benefits of doing it all myself; I can rip it off and redo it or do a new design for cheap and on a whim.

Well it's only a cutter, not a printer/cutter combo. The latter are unfeasibly expensive.

I'm starting out with a small 12" cutter (Silhouette Cameo; papercraft shit marketed for stay-at-home mothers), but the software is pretty industrially-minded hence I have a lot of freedom with it and can cut my own designs. I'll probably move up to a 24"-30" cutter in the near future for not much more additional cost.

I plan to stay with solid-colored vinyl designs like pic related because it looks clean/not noisy, stylish, and extremely cheap to do compared to printed vinyl.

I do know someone with a $10k printer/cutter, and he has his own little itasha group that he does the vinyl for at what I assume is a reasonable cost. But unless I'm tracking the car (distant future), I'll be staying with this style.

>>12541103
A full color wrap is $1k.

If you want to do it yourself, an entry level printer/cutter is $10k.
Add to that the cost of printable, UV-proof premium cast vinyl.
Then all the skill and practice learning how to do it right.

OR, if you want to do it like pic related, it's massively cheaper. You can get a cutting machine for $200-$400 depending on maximum cutting size.
And depending on the quality and type of vinyl, it can cost from $22 to $51 per 24"x10yd roll, which goes a long way. This style is definitely more forgiving and affordable.

As for the designs, learn to vector images. Then throw them on the cutter software for tracing or just transfer the paths over if your software can do it. That's basically how a cutter works--it cuts along vector paths.

>>12541092

Oh and anything can be itasha'd; just gonna be a bit harder for your SUV since you'll have to go for broke and cover a ton of area. Needless to say that's higher costs in vinyl, but it's not that much more and still doable.

One thing I do advice is to throw on some cosmetic mods before doing so. Unless it's already a performance car with a fast look, stock car itasha looks really lame (steelies with hub caps, stock ride height, no tints, chrome badging everywhere, etc.).

Join the itasha league anon. Fuck the normies on the road.
They don't call it "painful car" for no reason.

If I get lucky and get a decent job in the near future, I'd rather be tracking a different car. Most likely one of the 86 twins.
Of course, that will be itasha'd too.

But right now, I'm stuck with working with what I have, which isn't too bad.

LOL. That might actually be a good idea.
One of them went into a ricer phase when I started messing around with my civic (got inspired I guess). Put on Autozone hood scoops, hub caps, and a spoiler (at least it was factory style and paint matched). He eventually took the scoops off though.

I have another friend saving up for a first gen Scion xB. We're definitely gonna itasha that one. That boxy chassis is just perfect.

And I actually am in SoCal (inland empire). Everyone who itasha's here in CA seems to be in NorCal though, so I might be one of the first down here to go for broke.

Where you at? I'm planning on starting a small group with my friends, and helping other people get started on it so we can eventually have itasha gatherings at cons, and even volunteer them for show in cons (like some up in NorCal have been doing).

>> No.12541352

Though I have heard of a couple getting their car keyed. Really lame, but they just kept on trucking and put more vinyl on top. And if it's a full wrap, or they don't key past the vinyl and onto paint, chances are, a key won't go through the vinyl *and* clear coat (said to me by someone who had been keyed; he just buffed it right out and replaced the vinyl).

The 2012+ Si are so mellow compared to the previous gen. You have to at least add an intake to actually hear that familiar K series scream, otherwise it sounds just like any other car (nothing). And you can't even feel VTAK kick in, so they had to include that cheesy gauge on the dash to tell you when it does.

Oh well, more low-end torque though. I knew someone with one and tried it myself.

And yeah, the A pillars are both a bitch on the previous and current gen. There are times when a car or pedestrian perfectly speed-matched with my pillars at stops and had me almost running into them. You gotta move your whole body like crazy to avoid blind spots.

I'm actually in Temecula/Murrieta area which I consider more North SD county than IE.

What car you drive?
I can help you get started, info wise. I'm barely getting started myself but I pretty much already have done all the research and have the plans laid out. Money is just the only obstacle at the moment.

And like I said earlier, I only have a 12" cutter at the moment (will upgrade in the future), but if you need anything around that size cut (maximum is 12" x 10'), I might hook you up for really cheap.

"skirts"
They use em in NASCAR, they have an aerodynamic purpose... @ 300k+km/h, they build up a vacuum that literally sucks the lower chassis toward the pavement. You can imagine what happens if/when catastrophic fail occurs...

Rusting is the least of your problems when it handles like ass. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice looking car, but it utterly fails at being a car. If I wanted to buy a retarded overpriced 80s car, I'd at least get one that's fun to drive, like the 86.

RWD is always fun, and I'm only talking in terms of overpriced 80s cars that people buy for the look or because it was in something. The Delorean drives like shit, thus it's a shit car. Nice to put in a museum, that's it.

Delorean is famous for being in a movie, that's it, it's unique for the 80's

An 86 was and always will be a cheap rwd in it's time good handling for what it is, had a following before all the Initial D hype.

You can't compare them.

you know how many people have died on bikes in florida this year alone?

and guess how many of the old people who hit them had more than a dent in their fender

theres a reason why you only hear a motorcycle or two in your area for but a few times

used to be a chopper that drove by my house for a few months, which means they lived/commuted near me

nothing since

and its not like they have to worry about "seasonal" weather and can only ride for a few months out of the year

Florida is filled with people riding in wifebeaters, speeding through intersections. If it was a car in that, you'd end up with the person getting hit killed. Wear gear and don't ride like a retard and you'll be fine.

I figure this is a better place to ask than any

are there any good Japanese car enthusiast forums/boards?

Typically people interested in learning about their car and how to modify them will join an owner's forum for their car, but I'm buying something that was imported from Japan and was never released outside of it, so naturally, there's really not much info on english forums about the car.

I've been studying Japanese for a couple months now, and obviously I'm not close to fluent, but with a dictionary I can grind away and interpret stuff. It would be good practice and I could probably get the relevant information.

I'm getting a GC8 btw

>> No.12559951

the sections are dead as fuck compared to any USDM gen though. I didn't say no one knew anything, or that there was no info, but the activity, and information pales in comparison. English speaking RX-7 owner's forums for any USDM gen are incredibly lively and populous in comparison. There's pages of guides on how to do things, modding guides, etc.

I have the shop manual and plenty of other stuff already, but the more the better. Plus it would be a good place to practice my Japanese. I guess i'll lurk futaba's car board or something.

Really? There are tons of them around here. Granted most of them are beat to shit.

>>12568716
The GC8 is the coupe/sedan version, which can be either 2- or 4-door (for Japanese market cars, anyway; in the US, GCs are 4-door and GMs are 2-door). The 22B is a special beast and quite rare.
