Is it typically assumed that you will rely on a guide when playing VNs? I just started Steins;Gate recently, the first VN I've really played, and while I'm certainly enjoying it I get the feeling using a guide will be an absolute necessity if I want to actually get to any given specific ending, since the phone trigger events seem to be completely arbitrary.

I can kind of forgive it if use of a guide is assumed in the first place just because it's a VN, but if it's not banking on that sort of assumption for the medium then I have to say it's a really shitty way to design a game.

Well the game itself is a huge copy paste, but at least I thought that I'd feel like replaying the old one with different art. Instead of it they just made lame jokes with unfunny characters and all of heroines are too inferior against original ones, Specially cherry. The only good point is they knew that they cant copy samesuga and didn't even try.

You should really use a walkthrough for Steins;Gate. All the optional character ending branches are extremely obvious and easy to get but Kurisu and True routes require you to hit some pretty damn arbitrary and easily missed flags. At worst you end up like me and have to start the game from the middle point again and hold skip until the last chapter.

Usually it's as the other anon said. Either the choices are so few and simple that the game basically asks which route you want to play through or with some plot heavier games a flag hell that is impossible to figure out without a flowchart and kills the pacing. Then there's plenty of cases where the choices are just very short branches that have no actual bearing on the plot or ending.

If you want games that use choices well, meaning you actually have to think a bit in order to avoid bad endings but not so hard to figure out that they outright ruin the pacing I'd personally suggest Nakazawa's sci-fi titles like Remember11, I/O or Root Double. Fate/Stay Night and Muramasa also did pretty good jobs in my opinion.

Worst is when there's forced order but some route isn't locked and you would accidentally stuble there first and spoil and ruin everything. Like Rinko's route of Senshinkan. Or when route works only if you read previous routes, like Kono route in Itsusora.

So with the exception of Hai's route which is probably short since it's more of a bonus route, I finished the game. Kind of like the portable version better without the sex scenes but it's a shame since the CG is pretty good. God damn that Yura route though, my heart was not prepared for this.

Anyway, is there something similar to this? Lots of focus on family and interaction between characters besides the protagonist and the heroine? It felt like watching a SOL show with a very likeable cast.

It's not such a long read, and I had close to no expectations... I must say I was not looking for anything perfect and I quite liked the (main) characters...

If I compare it to other titles from KID/Cyberfront, I liked better over Never 7, was better explained than R11 even tho the atmosphere was less breath-taking, and less boring than Ever17 but fed less grandiose.

You'll find similar elements to the Infinity saga in this first (but last...) game of the Integral saga.Then again, the scenario is worth what it is but at least I got KID'd. The bad ends really leave you with this "wtf have I just read" feeling, and the good end is really a "good" end, still a bit "was wtf pseudo-scientific bullshirt fiction" but meh, don't sweat over the
small details.

So overall I am quite satisfied.
If you have a bit more than 20 hours, and like those paradox/scientific(lol) stories you might want to give it a read.

Asa Project know how to make characters likeable that's for sure. Renai portable has some extra scenes and four new routes but it kind of sucks to play with such a low resolution so go for whatever version you want when you play it.

I'm reading お兄ちゃん、右手の使用を禁止します while waiting on other releases. So far the characters seem like boring cut outs, and the interactions aren't fun. The art is cute enough, but the dialogue and VAs make it a chore to read through. I'm hoping the ero is at least good because this game is steaming pile of shit.

I have played all of Clochette games so I can bear this much without any problem. Game is seriously fun and they handle the "jealousy" part pretty well. Mc is a little too much donkan, but other than this I cant see any bad thing about it.

They improved almost everything (specially writing and jokes) from the first game, seems like Madosoft will be a fun moege company.

Off the top of my head, Hoshi no Ne Sanctuary or whatever the second most recent Marmalade title was and Angel Ring. Not exactly high quality titles, but still.

I had my doubts in the beginning. Everybody's clear jouken were too easy for anything interesting to happen. But then came the second stage.

I only have some minor complaints. Other than that, it's a really good game. I can't believe I missed it.

Been playing Imouto no Okage de Motesugite Yabai and I don't remember when was the last time a non-action or non-mystery visual novel hooked me up so strongly.

All the heroines are great and even the side girls are great. But what makes it interesting is the premise where you have to directly reject each girl in order to pursue the "main" love interest. Of course, non rejection at any point branches the story.

Currenly going for the heterochromia girl Kanae but I have the saves ready for the other routes as well.

Finished Sayonara wo oshiete, really liked it, it was a great mix between eerie as fuck and extremely depressing by the time it ends, the OST, at least the character themes were really varied and there was some real effort in the CG department even if it mostly went to some really bizarre sex scenes.
If it managed to do one thing, was making me feel like shit for Hitomi, the guy was obviously off since he was a kid, killing small animals, peeping on his sister and stuff, but he just crumbled under the weight of reality later on to the point where he broke, Tonae's "he lost to reality and also to his delusions" part really nailed it, the poor guy can't escape his suffering, even in the end. He even and went and killed his 'angel' in Mutsuki's end, which was just depressing on several levels.. Aside from this I really liked how the heroines are basically his mouthpieces/parts f his psyche so all their behavior, especially Nozomi and Miyuki are basically projections of parts of his personality.

So I finally finished this. It's a max between good and bad, but it's entertaining at least. I'm a big fan of the trapped-tag, so I probably enjoyed it more than I should.

Finally finished AstralAir.

Yuuki's route was great, felt like it did a really good job of keeping a lot of the cast involved in the story while still focusing on Yuuki. I wouldn't say the other heroine routes were bad but I didn't get drawn into them as much as Yuuki's for sure, it has made me want something with just a single main route (and maybe small branch off endings for H scenes like Eustia) since I felt that could have worked in this case (with the development the girls getting in their routes happening in Yuuki's anyway, such as Corona deciding to go into space as a human).

Yuuki's H scenes made it clear that Riku is a lolicon, now to wait for the fandisk for the 幼稚園部 route. Would be nice to have something for Yuki in it too.

Don't like the empty feeling left after finishing which happens sometimes, will need to move onto something else to get rid of it.

Gun Knight Girls suffered from being too long for its own good and of having a protagonist that was insufferable at times.

While reorganizing my folder, I found a bunch of titles that I have absolutely no idea when or why I even got them. I'm not sure what spurred me to download titles like Aster or Yumemishi, or how I came across them even. It's like drunkenly purchasing stuffs from Amazon.
