1252106 No.1252106 [Reply] [Original]

Yesterday I was trying to find a restaurant in Beppu, and the guy at the hostel had given me shit directions, so I asked a guy I saw standing outside one of the hostess clubs (there was no-one else around), and we both got pretty frustrated due to little proficiency in Japanese and the shit information I was given (I asked for the name of the restaurant and he gave me the name of the street, arsehole). So to kind of shift responsibility I said annoyedly 'watashi no hoteru baka desu!', and the guy gave me a stern look and I think I heard him say some permutation of 'dame'.

But 'baka' just means stupid, right? It can be serious swearing but it's usually not, right? And even if it was, why would he care, he works at a fucking sex club?

I don't fucking know the words for bad directions and whatever it is you've posted in hiragana there. My Japanese is barely understandable, I just came to 4chan to ask why the fuck this guy apparently got offended at 'baka', but from what I can glean from your posts you're taking issue at the very sentence "my hotel is stupid". It makes sense in English, so are you trying to tell me, in your own cute little supercilious way, that it doesn't make sense in Japanese? Even if I did say "my hotel is an idiot" I couldn't give a shit, I'm not aiming for perfect grammar here, just so the guy got the gist.

Very nicely done troll.
But here's my take on this if you were really in need of help.

JAPANESE and ENGLISH are DIFFERENT languages.
The social interaction between the two nations are DIFFERENT. Hell, shit you normally say here can sound dumb as fuck over there and vice versa.

And if I remember correctly, Japan isn't as tolerant of outsiders who can't speak diddly squat of their language. Especially when you actually engage with one of them and waste their time because you suck at saying shit.
America also has this same sentiment, but since we have a lot more foreigners and non-english speakers, we tend to tolerate much of it.

Either the guy was asking you for a reason why your "hotel is an idiot" (which is weird since he had a stern face), or he said something like "hopeless" at the whole situation after earing "my hotel is an idiot".

actually you were also talking about literally about the hotel itself.

the building.

you told that man that the hotel building is stupid.

if you'd said that the people who work there were stupid, that'd be something else.

as for the particle (i'm sure someone's already said this).... you left out the motherfucking topic marker of "wa"

>>1252389
So let me get this straight. When you say 'hoteru', the Japanese will only interpret it to mean the building. Hence the man was confused as to why my hotel building could be stupid and could not see any other possible meaning of the word 'hoteru' I was trying to convey.

I do not know the word for 'people', or 'employee', or 'hotel worker', or 'clerk'. Therefore I used 'hoteru'. If I was a foreigner to America and I said "My hotel is an idiot" in English, would you assume I was talking about the brick and concrete construction? Only if you were incredibly obtuse. Are you telling me that Japanese is so different from English that translating that sentence conveys an entirely difference meaning? I refuse to believe it.

Also, from the books I have read about Japanese, the people themselves tend to leave out big chunks of their sentences: subjects, objects and particles where the meaning of the sentence is assumed. And yet you're having a go at me for leaving out 'wa' in almost the simplest sentence you can construct. I should think the topic of my sentence is pretty fucking clear.

>>1252344
This is a load of bullshit. I, who can speak only slightly more than virtually no Japanese, have had perfectly pleasant conversations with men and women in the street (who speak little English) about where I am from, where I have been, how long I am travelling for etc. I don't know the word for 'day', but they can understand what I mean if I say 'ni-jyu-ji'. I'm sure I fucked up my grammar many a time, but they obviously couldn't give a shit about it because they understand what I mean. I've been given gifts of food and drink by these people. If you can't speak a language, than a native should immediately be able to recognise that and expect mistakes.

tl;dr you're all a bunch of pedantic fucks. Next time I'll take my Japanese language questions elsewhere. inb4 very witty remarks akin to 'good riddance'.

Hey /jp/,

My name is OP, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are fat, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day looking at stupid ass touhou pictures. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten out of your basement? I mean, I guess it's fun to play shooters, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than taking Japanese classes.

Don't be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I'm pretty much perfect. I spend every day on the beach and onsen. Where have you ever been other than "Imaginary-Japan"? I also get directions, and I'm in a banging hot hoteru (I got here yesterday; Shit was SO baka). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.
