I mentioned the other day that there's a weird problem with them, which is the the fact that they're still...around and far from dead.

To put it in perspective, there's basically no WWII IJN combat vessel that's still afloat, while there's about four non-Iowa USN BBs living as museums now.

A problem faced by all prize ships regardless of nation (take note of the two Italian battleships were given to the States). Removing "muh airpower" from the equation, the fact that Nagato is much older than most USN ships means whatever cost far outweighs the benefits of having a battleship that will not fit >muh doctrines

Pretty much this actually, the Iowas are basically few times the ship that Nagato is, and they fit USN carrier-centric doctrines better due to higher speed (all those knots gained is a big deal).

Regarding rebuilds, Nagato could take a long time to be converted into a USN-type BB, due to the need to basically take out everything and rebuild from an empty hull (placement of the secondaries is already a point of contention, the only way around this is to place them on the deck). Something that they're not too interested in considering there's two more perfectly useful empty Iowa hulls that they could use if they ever needed more battleships.

I remembered reading up on "how to make NorCals and SoDaks faster", and the consensus is that the whole thing is pointless due to the costs involved, and they're much newer battleships compared to Nagato.

You're not supposed to use a mixed fleet like this, it's the worst approach I've ever encountered. You either:
a) bruteforce it with 4BB 2CV
or
b) stealth-win with submarine(s) - 1 or more SS and a lot of luck. Much easier if your subs are remodeled and capable of performing cut-ins to prevent nasty surprises on boss node.
Whatever you choose, pray a lot. Sparkling your fleet may help if you're really desperate.

Drop the subs and use 4 BB 2 CV. If you don't have another 2 BB, CAs are ok, but make sure all your ships' firepower, torpedo and armor are maxed.

Also make sure your CVs are setup to get air superiority for the map. Use the calculator in the OP. If you don't know what's going on, go read the wiki under the section Combat.

Do carrier or BB recipe more and get more modernization fodder before trying again.

There are 2 ways to play the game on the go:

The right one, using a Windows tablet running Windows 8. They are powerful enough to meet the devs specifications so you'll play as if you were on a PC.

The side road one: Using TeamViewer you get access to your PC via remote access and play as if you were on your Tabletop. The main problem is that it is extremely laggy and TeamViewer needs a fairly potent mobile phone or tablet to run properly.

I think CAs will work fine too, I've just been using Yuubari since day one for that map and honestly never tried any other composition. When you load up Tone/Chikuma with nothing but drums, they won't be doing much damage anyway, but they can probably withstand hits better. In this case RJ had Tomonaga Tenzan on the biggest slot, Reppu Kai, Reppu and Saiun on small slot. Chiyoda had Egusa on the biggest slot and the rest filled with Reppus and Reppu 601.

In order to recreate these battles, something either has to loosely or explicitly represent the other side. And they picked the vaguest way possible. I don't think I can even get there without grinding. The only ship I have that does anything is Kiso. Or at least she was doing stuff until I went into 1-3, at which point she went down to hitting for single digits like everything else.
Very occasionally Ryuujou can do something with an airstrike but those never succeed, but my Tatsuta and destroyers are largely useless and just take a bunch of damage and force me to go back to prevent anyone dying. I was not blessed with any other light cruisers and Tatsuta is so unimpressive I can't imagine they'd help anyway.
I just can't do enough damage to keep up with how much health and damage all the enemies have. It feels like I'm just missing something obvious and crucial.

Time for crafting a BB and getting a CA. If you are lucky enough to get a BB on your first or second try then cheers.

Craft some recon planes if youn don't have. You should equip your CA and BB with 2 reds and a recon. Even a shitty 12 cm naval gun will do for the second red gun.

Once you've got this, sortie those with RJ. You should be getting Artillery spotting and wreck everything on those levels with your CA and BB doing double attack
