This is just my opinion, but I think it's the other way around. There is too much denpa coming out. Or should I say, too many artists claiming they're denpa. I mean, back then people decided what was a denpa song the moment they heard that new quirky and catchy song in their favorite anime/eroge/commercial/whatever (polls, 2ch threads and whatnot), and it became the new denpa song of the moment.

Now we have a bunch of circles at Comiket claiming they make denpa songs. Which isn't bad in itself, but I fear it makes everything get stale, because it tries to establish denpa as a genre with a stiff definition/sound, and doesn't encourage the community to think and search for themselves for something new. Denpa songs are and have been quite a rarity, because they come out spontaneously. As a composer, you don't decide you're going to make a catchy and quirky song before you start making it. It spontaneously comes out that way due of many factors and context. Note how composers of classic denpa songs never had the intention of making such a song; it just came out that way, and that's how it got perceived by the public.

Not that I'm complaining of course, it's just my view of the current situation. I think CKP is the latest gem in this area.

>As a composer, you don't decide you're going to make a catchy and quirky song before you start making it.
Uh, what? If you're a good composer, you can shape whatever mood you want. That's how soundtracks work. And denpa isn't just "catchy and quirky," qualities which might as well encompass any otaku-centric pop music. Denpa is a thematic quality of the music expressed through certain formal aspects (e.g. atmosphere, dissonance, rhythmic/tonal shifts, lyricism). You might be right that too many are hopping on it. But this is due to how closely moepop is tied to denpa and the two are oft confused. I think the amount of "proper" denpa is hardly saturated.

>Note how composers of classic denpa songs never had the intention of making such a song; it just came out that way
This might've been true before it became a genre. But intent hardly matters, and it probably existed, just not as "denpa." Togawa Jun's music seems to me an early prototype of the denpa aesthetic. Anyway, there's no problem with people recycling the musical motifs they're familiar with. It's not getting stale because people have "genre-fied" denpa, but because it's a "tag-along" theme attached to already tired genres (j-rock, j-pop, EDM). Denpa-dubstep was born stale.

But I think a large part of denpa's charm is how recycled and "mashed up" it sounds. Well, I'm still enjoying it at least, though I tend to keep gravitating to the same artists. Whether denpa proper or moepop disguised as denpa, I'm just glad people took the effort to make it and fans who will share it.

I think there's about as much good denpa-ish stuff coming out now as there was a few years ago, but there's definitely a lot more chaff to wade through to find it. Most of the crossfades from c86 sounded like bland, soulless moepop, but there were a couple of good albums.

I said it wasn't declining and it only seemed quiet since the albums come in bursts through the four events. Did you mean: "I agree that denpa isn't declining"?

>Sorry but you don't only need a domain, but also a dedicated server. They aren't cheap
Except it is cheap. We aren't in the 90s, anyone with a decent job can afford a server. You don't need a high upload speed for a radio streaming <320bit music, especially for this small demographic.

A domain is what I call cheap.

>If you're a good composer, you can shape whatever mood you want.
Mood? Of course. End result? Not at all. You don't really have a clear image of the end result before you work on it, and a song being catchy or not is pretty much one of the most volatile aspects of composition. There's a reason why some songs are better received than others, even ones by the same artist.

>You might be right that too many are hopping on it. But this is due to how closely moepop is tied to denpa and the two are oft confused.
It's probably the other way around. These things are confused _because_ too many are hopping on it. Or maybe both statements are right and it's a vicious circle.

>I think the amount of "proper" denpa is hardly saturated.
I agree, that's why I said that denpa songs have always been a rarity by nature. Of course there are aspects that are well defined and can be shaped up, but the atmosphere of a denpa song is partly accidental, and that's why it's rare.

And let's not forget that there's also the self-parody aspect to denpa. When you try to make only denpa songs and albums, with the same themes, it seems like you're taking yourself too seriously and it isn't a self-parody anymore. This might be the same thing that happened with vaporwave.

>Togawa Jun's music seems to me an early prototype of the denpa aesthetic.
I agree, but it's just how it came out. If you watch her inteviews or live shows, she's like that. While expressing herself, she ended up with a combination of elements that were later considered denpa. I don't think it was fully intentional. Besides, this was kind of new and untried at the time.

>but because it's a "tag-along" theme attached to already tired genres (j-rock, j-pop, EDM)
Oh, that's a good point. Trying different genres might really help with the novelty. Some punk or metal stuff always catches my eye. ARM tried this and the result is superb.

It's not that I would have trouble paying. I usually have a surplus of money each month that I can spend on video games and stuff, and a site for denpa would probably a lot better than me spending all of my money on a wii-u or something. I just want to wait and make sure I can commit to this. It's an idea that popped into my head yesterday, so if I'm going to do this I want to make sure I want to do this. You should consider that hosting a web-facing server is a considerable challenge even for technically inclined persons. If you walk into this unprepared, chances are that you will soon be paying for a server sending spam, hosting CP or acting as a DDoS command center for various shady individuals that lurk the web. You should at least have intermediate knowledge of *nix and know how to set-up some common infrastructure elements such as firewalls, webserver, SSH server and so forth before you start getting serious. I'd recommend installing something like VirtualBox and start setting things up locally for training.

>> No.12471061

>>12471024
I think you're exaggerating the exploitability of servers. You could buy a VPS, install the latest version of Debian (or whatever other stable distro), install nginx/apache/your preferred web server, and you would basically be good. You might want to configure SSH to use keys rather than passwords too, but even that really isn't a problem as long as you don't choose stupid passwords.
It's pretty rare that something comes out that can exploit default application configurations, and when it does it's a big deal and you would probably hear about it. Most exploits are from shitty PHP code or exploits in bad software (ie: not high profile web servers).
A firewall would probably introduce more problems than it fixes, because it's pretty likely that if he doesn't know what he's doing, it will be misconfiguration and just give him a harder time.
So, yes, a basic understanding of *nix is probably required unless you're running a Windows server or something, but other than that there's not much you need to know that you can't Google.

Each TB of monthly data transfer should support about 12 full time slots at an average of 245 kbps (mp3 v0). I don't know what RAM usage will be like for a streaming music server, but I don't assume you would need more than 256-512 MB.

Mood and tone are what makes denpa denpa, not catchiness.

>End result? Not at all.
That might be true if you couldn't listen to your work-in-progress.

>a song being catchy or not is pretty much one of the most volatile aspects of composition.
Nah. Catchy songs are some of the easiest to make. Simple chord progressions (usually in major), lots of repetition, and simple pop structure.

>And let's not forget that there's also the self-parody aspect to denpa.
It's true that it's a fundamental part to the denpa aesthetic, but I think moe, and thus moepop, is increasingly self-reflexive (like Momoi Haruko/UNDER17 stuff, who coined the term). I think it's better to approach denpa as a motif or theme rather than a genre, but I think you already feel the same way. Anyway, this might be why the two are so closely tied together. Moesongs are ripe for that self-parody. Is denpa really that rare? It depends on how you view moesongs. I think there's grounds to argue that they ARE all denpa on some level now.

But you know, people "trying to make" denpa isn't a bad thing. It'll probably confuse things further, but like film noir, a lot of great things come out of it. Decades later, we still see elements of it in contemporary films. I hope to see denpa in the future in new and exciting permutations. Shifting through the lazy rehashes is the cost of that.

>vaporwave
That on the other hand, needs to die. It was totally fine before tumblr threw a label on it and shit on it to death. It needs to stop.

>While expressing herself, she ended up with a combination of elements that were later considered denpa. I don't think it was fully intentional.
I think the denpa aesthetic starts in the 80s with more radio and television influence. At any rate, she was definitely trying to be "weird" in a spacey, discordant way, much like denpa today. I think people have always tried to make "weird" music. Denpa is just the otaku expression of that drive. My two cents.

You're looking at music as if it's strictly a science, not an art AND science. If that were the case, anyone who studied music theory would be able to make catchy songs whenever they wanted, but it's not the case. But this is kinda off-topic now.

>I hope to see denpa in the future in new and exciting permutations. Shifting through the lazy rehashes is the cost of that.
Well, I don't know why we're arguing since we seem to agree after all. I just feel a bit puzzled after seeing all the people loving those lazy rehashes you mention, instead of searching for other stuff. You can find if you try. Maybe because they're just a vocal and lazy minority, I don't know. Just makes me wonder why they listen to it in the first place. I'm not talking only about the west by the way.

>That on the other hand, needs to die. It was totally fine before tumblr threw a label on it and shit on it to death. It needs to stop.
Why? You could say the same thing about denpa now.

>At any rate, she was definitely trying to be "weird" in a spacey, discordant way, much like denpa today. I think people have always tried to make "weird" music.
Right, but when that weird and bizarre sound becomes commonplace it's not weird and bizarre anymore, don't you think? You have to either increase the hurdle even more (over the top, which keeps getting higher), or try something uncommon. Some artists manage to do it sometimes, and that's where the rarity comes in.

As someone said in an old thread, making a song that sounds like denpa is different from making an actual denpa song. What I finally mean is that, actual denpa songs still exist, but the "denpa" label is reclining.

Vaporwave got started in /mu/, didn't it? It was known by that name for years before tumblr found it. I think the recent directional change in the vaporwave culture/aesthetic is due to a "second gen" discovering it now without context and not realizing that it was a joke... kind of like what happened with bronies, and probably a lot of other niche subcultures I'm unaware of. (Maybe even denpa? Although I don't know that much about the evolution of the culture in Japan to be able to say.)

Not necessarily true. The otaku who are like "fuck 3D!" are not majority. Look at all the otaku who follow and love anime and eroge seiyuu or idols. By that logic, live events of anime music with seiyuu and whatnot would be completely unprofitable. Besides eroge otaku, compared to anime otaku, seem to be less strict and whiny about it too.

>>12479612
I think that vaporwave has some things in common with denpa, like the self-parody aspect.

>a "second gen" discovering it now without context and not realizing that it was a joke
You could say that the same thing happened to denpa, although exactly when is arguable. Someone said it in a very old thread.

But denpa is much more ambiguous and it's mostly original songs, so they differ a lot.

>I just feel a bit puzzled after seeing all the people loving those lazy rehashes you mention, instead of searching for other stuff.
They likely didn't care much for denpa in the first place, but wanted moesongs/anisongs instead. But now that denpa is gaining more and more ground, they "like denpa." Like Denpagumi Inc isn't all bad, but it's really no different from other idol pop.

>Why? You could say the same thing about denpa now.
It's significantly lazier and shittier than even the worse denpa. Completely devoid of anything that might have kept the genre relevant and afloat. On one hand, you will get generic moepop. On the other hand, you get shitty loops of old rnb songs. Not that "vaporwave" is a bad aesthetic, but the best guys doing it don't call themselves "vaporwave." Like how most of the best denpa acts don't call their music "denpa." As you said, it just comes off as that.

> If that were the case, anyone who studied music theory would be able to make catchy songs whenever they wanted, but it's not the case.
I think it IS the case, though. Pop radio survives through a tried-and-true formula. Most of the people doing it probably don't even know music theory! If it isn't catchy, it's probably because they weren't going for that. The "art" comes from making something different that is just as catchy, but most artists don't stretch themselves that far.

>Right, but when that weird and bizarre sound becomes commonplace it's not weird and bizarre anymore, don't you think?
While it's true that we've gotten used to "weirdness" like dissonance and complex rhythms, there's a peculiar type that makes denpa "denpa." I don't think you need to experiment that much, it's just people are lazy and fall to the pop side of things more often than not, or combine with other genres in very uninteresting ways (e.g. denpa-dubstep).

>> No.12482787

>>12479612
>Vaporwave got started in /mu/, didn't it?
Nope. It was started by Chuck Person (Oneohtrix Point Never) who called them "eccojams" and James Ferraro. Those guys pretty much set the standard for everything vaporwave. From the VHS, 80's consumer-culture fetishism to the themes of postmodern loss found in his loops. They're masters of recontextualizing the old into themes of emptiness, advanced consumerism, and hyperreality/the age of simulacra. It has a very prominent "message." The recycling of sounds comes to parallel the recycling of signs in contemporary culture and the void of self that results. The feeling of "drifting" in eccojams or Far Side Virtual represents our own situation.

Anyway, we can thank people like Macintosh Plus for shitting everything up by creating the label "vaporwave" and pushing a "joke" (irony they only drop when it's convenient for them; they're really knowledgeable and philosophically-minded otherwise!). AFAIK Mac+ is tumblr-oriented so it took off from there. /mu/ is actually copying Tumblr. So it's more like 3rd or 4th gen now.

Now Denpa is very similar to "vaporwave" because it alludes to the same postmodern phenomena--fragmentation, hyperreality, advanced consumerism, etc. It's completely, self-knowingly generic moepop one second and hauntingly discordant static the next, filled with irony and layers of reference. It's ADHD music for the individual crippled by the internet and consumer sign inundation. I would say moe is such a huge part of denpa because moe lives on through recycling.

And then you have the guys shitting out actual boring moepop and slapping "denpa" on it. But at least I can stand moepop. I can slow Diana Ross down by myself, thanks.

Done rambling. I just fucking hate vaporwave with it's patently underaged and ignorant fucks desperately trying to cash in on (likely unlived) nostalgia and cheap (post-)irony. There's no doubt that many of them are completely sincere about it at this point.

I think it's fine to make a distinction between moesongs and denpa songs, but that doesn't mean they need separate threads or that some categories should stop being discussed.

Using a more accurate umbrella label might help to cull the repetitive arguing, though. Akiba-pop is probably more broad then denpa.

When was this decided? From the very start artists strictly known in the denpa song scene were mentioned and discussion about denpa and its culture always existed. This leads me to believe that these threads are, in fact, supposed to be about denpa songs.

>or that some categories should stop being discussed
Exactly. I don't see why discussing things (in a message board) is such a terrible thing that would justify some thread split or renaming. I don't go whining around when people post dmp albums.

>Using a more accurate umbrella label might help to cull the repetitive arguing, though.
I don't know if you're reading the thread, but we're talking about the current denpa scene, not about what denpa is. Do you know what's repetitive? Guys complaining because they don't like having other people talk about things every time someone dares to think about things.

>Akiba-pop is probably more broad then denpa.
I've only seen MOSAIC.WAV use this term, and they don't even use it much anymore. It's broader because it's more ambiguous. Do you want to include all music born or popular in Akiba? Besides, not all denpa songs are akiba-pop.

Also, let's not forget that these threads are allowed in /jp/ only because of their cultural aspect. Why not be honest instead? It's easier. Just say that you don't care about denpa songs and go make a cute japanese music thread on /mu/.

Momoi and Aniki didn't get along very well, and also, didn't make any money. They talked a bit about it at their talk show event at animejapan earlier this year. Momoi apologized to him and suggested getting UNDER17 back together. I think she must not have discussed this with him before the event, because he quickly dismissed the idea and said they should focus on their own projects.

I love UNDER17 greatly, but it wouldn't be the same if they got back together now. The times have changed too much. But I do wish Momoi would go back to her song writing of UNDER17, which was a mix of personal and 'in-character' lyrics. I think she's running out of ideas to sing about herself, so I wish she would get 'in character' like she did for UNDER17. Back then, they would give her a game with a simple concept like "sukumizu", and she could write 2 completely different takes on the concept, with cute characterization and memorable situations. (Well, really she wrote more than 2 songs on sukumizu, but you get my point.)

Of course I'm talking about what's popular and what you'll find in clubs, that's what I mean by the "electronic music scene". If you look for rock and noise music you'll find rock and noise music. If I look for fucking dark ambient I'll find it. Go listen to it in a bubble. But EDM is getting popular thus popular artists are making it. Most circles that used to make trance or electrohouse are picking it up, see Aggression, Shadybass, The Synthesis Collective, Toho Speed, MDML, Sudden Shower, etc. and 1 or more EDM song on most other albums. Or rhythm games like IIDX or SDVX. Even Vocaloid or hardcore artists like Kikuo or USAO. It's getting harder to escape it. It's because the people who make denpa now don't actually understand what denpa is/was. Hence we just get watered down moepop being marketed as denpa.

The otaku market is still at a profitable peak in Japan, therefore it's only natural that people will try and cash in on niche otaku music too, hence we now have squeaky clean 'denpa idol' groups and so called 'denpa' songs which are such bad copies and miss the point of the movement to such an extent that they're the equivalent of watching a music exec wear a shades and a backwards baseball cap and try rap while throwing in every piece of marginally related 'rapper slang' he can in order to seem 'down with the kids'.

And don't give me any of the "B-But they're doujin circles!" crap either. Anyone who's been going to comiket enough will know of the growing number of legitimate labels, studios, companies and publishers who register as a 'doujin circle' under a different name in order to avoid various taxes and make money from the 'underground appeal'.

The J-Trance scene from 2007-2010 was great, all the great names have gone down the western EDM route now. Starving Trancer, MK/Perfect Stream to name a few.

If you don't believe this person then go here and follow the blog posts chronologically from oldest to newest: http://www.dancemania-ex.com/blog/

This used to be the hotspot for J-Trance a few years ago (I think it grew out of a thread on the Initial D forums), always listing the new Exit Trance, House Nation and Dancemania compilations. Now there's virtually nothing to blog about, Exit Trance is basically over besides a new anitora release every now and again, Exit Tunes is basically 100% vocaloid now.

Even J-Core went down the EDM route. You can thank the Ultra Music Festival for setting up a UMF Japan event.

Were there any specific albums you had interest in? Most of the releases I've seen aren't even full-albums so it's whatever.

Once something becomes big enough you'll get a lot of noise. Some are more appealing than others so you have to filter from all the trash. But yeah, I've gotta agree with you that a lot of unwelcomed people are getting into denpa just to make profit. The 00's will continue to be the golden age of denpa as the 70's was for rock and the 80's and early 90's for pop.

I suppose that if your workmate are open some of the albums by MOSAIC.WAV could work.

At my old office my boss snooped at some of my music and said he liked Momoi Haruko and played her music for his kids. He was really religious and uptight so I was always afraid he would search her on youtube and find some erogame op...

Also when I left that job, I forgot to delete my music off of my work computer.... Still wonder about that considering some of the album covers alone would be enough to freak him out.
