Since the base itself is in a somewhat populated area, they lug all their artillery to an isolated area for training. It just so happens that they have to use the road that runs in front of my apartment to get there.

Well I haven't been to too many other places for too long, but in my opinion Oita is much more backwater - in a good way! It's very peaceful and people here are fairly laid back, maybe due to the onsen lifestyle. Much of the produce is grown locally, and the livestock is also raised locally, so the food is delicious. The beaches are a bit disappointing, but its proximity to Miyazaki makes up for that.

Most ramen in Kyushu is tonkotsu-based, but there's a ramen joint a few minutes away from here that has the most delicious butter soy sauce ramen in the world... The gyoza and kimchi fried rice are amazing, too.

I'm doing the ESL thing, but studying in order to (hopefully) get another job later on.

I've been here for a little over 3 years and don't plan on leaving ever.

Here are a few shots rice paddies throughout the seasons, in Yufu, Oita.

First, the tilling of the soil.

Then, the rice is planted. It's already quite large at the time of planting, and typically large machines are used. Some smaller fields or awkwardly-shaped areas are still planted by hand.

After the rice is harvested, it's usually left out to dry until it's ready to be washed and packaged for distribution. These are two of the main methods of drying the harvested rice.

I visited France without knowing very much French and I did alright however they use the same alphabet

It's definitely possible to get by. It won't be easy, especially once you leave major urban centers, but one of my fellow American teachers knew absolutely no Japanese when he got here and he's managed just fine. You just have to get used to most things not being in a language that you can understand, and don't be afraid to ask someone for help, even if that largely consists of gestures.

Ryokan - busy and stressful as all get-out. Unless you inherit it, it's a money pit and you'll be working your whole life to pay off your debt.
Onsen only - probably less stressful, but you still pay out of your butt to build and maintain it.

Kamikochi is pretty cool.
I went there in 2010 and it was much nicer to get out of the summer heat than I'd thought.
A lot of the other days of my trip to Japan I went to bed early because the heat drained me completely, but it was about 19°C on the mountain.

I'm a machinist, so I just need a lathe or a mill to make things.

How does a foreigner get treated in Japan? I've always wanted to live there because it's the perfect place to take it easy, but I've also been afraid that I would not be taken to too kindly, because I'm pretty fat due to my lack of self-discipline and apathetic attitude. I don't really care much for the traditions and the deeper parts of the culture, so would I be completely neglected and treated not-so-wonderfully by natives?

Cleaner and more sustainable (in the sense that terrestrial sources of fissible materials are finite, however long it might take us to run out) sources that have zero rather than the variously considerable to negligible risk of catastrophic failure posed by nuclear power.

I am enamored with the realistic potential for fusion power we're staring down the barrel of, but even if it proves untenable and we cannot produce a plant with net efficiency, I do think near future solar power and battery systems have promise to be reasonable primary sources.

Shirakawa-go is a popular tourist site year-round. You can stay overnight in farmhouses, but that's quite expensive, so I spent the night in Takayama and took the bus to Shirakawa-go.

Yes, its a fairly popular tourist spot. I used to live near it and went a few times, staying the night the first time. Those images are from my first visit during July or early August, and I hoped it would be like that again but it never quite hit the high of the first trip. So you might not find it quite that green. Here's a pic looking down over the town, close to the lookout, which /jp/ might find familiar.

It's a small place with a nice atmosphere, you can walk across town in about 6-8 minutes. I stayed the night at the hot spring building, but a lot of tourists try to stay in the traditional houses.

This is Hirado bridge, about a 30-40ish mile bike ride from Sasebo. Good beaches, great parks. A really good place for training on hills if you bike a lot, it's really beautiful.

Not difficult at all; the most important thing is keeping an open mind. I had studied Japanese in college and then on my own for a while before coming, so I could speak and understand it fairly well upon arrival. Here's some rather melancholic pics from Namie, Fukushima.

Town was evacuated due to the tsunami and is struggling to get out of its current ghost-town state since most people moved away.

Note, radiation is NOT an issue here anymore. Same goes for the majority of Fukushima. The only problem with radiation away from the nuclear plant is radioactive top-soil, most of which has already been manually removed, and the remainder is being worked on.

I've heard similar things. And they are really big on the 外・中 deal - men work (and have affairs, if so desired) while women stay at home and clean, take care of the children, etc. They refuse to take part in shopping or chores because "that's a woman's job", and some even freely talk about their lovers with their wives present because it's considered acceptable.

If my husband ever tried something like that, I'd take his balls clean off.

It's mainly the idea that the man is the breadwinner, stays out all night working and then drinking and dining with his coworkers, comes back home whenever he wants (or not at all), etc., while the wife is often expected to remain a housewife - not work - raise children, keep the house spotless, do laundry every day, cook perfect meals, and do all the shopping. It's not everybody, but it's still somewhat common even in younger relationships.

There's a bit of both - marriages based on romance and marriages based on convenience. It's not uncommon to visit companies that act as matchmakers, setting up two people based on values and the like. More often than not, the marriages that result from these omiai are of mutual convenience between two people who think each other is a bretty cool guy, but not necessarily the love of their life.

I majored in Japanese in college, so I learned mine there. She majored in English, understands it very well (I want to say understands fluently), but doesn't speak it. I usually speak to her in a combination of English and Japanese, while she speaks in Japanese.

I am OK at Japanese, good enough to hold conversations, not good enough to get a job yet (I only had 3 years of college before dropping to join the Navy)
