how /jp/ are you /jp/?

I know kana, but I will always lose motivation after a month of grammar/vocab study. I browse japanese pornhub and read the titles of videos of rikaichan. I have considered translating Grisaia no Meikyuu using a combination of Atlas, Google Translate, and rikaichan. I have never played touhou.

I'm a 4chan level otaku. I don't talk with you chumps in anime club, I don't read your "anime magazine" with new releases I saw two years ago. I don't need to go to a club full of fat smelly people to watch Full Metal Alchemist all over again. I've got fuckin' live feed torrents of the newest animes you haven't even hear of, and figures from said anime being shipped to my house so I can masturbate on them. Go read your "yowie" on fanfiction.net, I'm downloading loli dojinshi and reading the fucking raws.
You keep wearing your naruto headbands and shit, socializing with your weeaboo friends. I'll be walking by, Anonymous. You'll never know that the master of anime had passed you by, because I suppress my power level.

Lollll that didn't work. You just won't be able to understand the stuff you're trying to translate.

Having said that, the best way to learn to understand it is to just consume more of it. Preferably material that you can sort of understand but that has small bits that you don't fully understand or aren't fully confident with. That puts you at the optimal distance outside your comfort zone, i.e. it results in optimal learning.

It's soul crushing for anyone. I do it for efficiency but never for itself. You should always read/listen stuff around, it makes the process smoother.
I use that infamous Core 2k/6k/10k but only unsuspend words I am already remotely familiar with on my readings (I have highly customized it to hide translations and convert the production cards to listening comprehension). You can create your own deck if you are not as lazy as me too. With 3 years in your hand you could have had a massive amount of vocab with only a dozen cards a day.

Not that it matters, if you are still at least learning a little each day, anything goes.

You should use other methods to supplement flash cards. Use mnemonics and other memory techniques. They're easy and efficient to use once you put some effort into learning them. It will be more efficient if you use that in combination with flash cards. This is ESPECIALLY true for learning kanji.

I studied Japanese as my minor (for about 18 months until I dropped out) in order to follow Sugita (ie. Tokyo Encounter) and GCCX. I also started watching lot of owarai stuff after finding about Downtown on that Lincoln episode with Yoiko, but seiyuu stuff became my main focus. Sadly I can't into reading because I was extremely lazy studying and the teacher wasn't very strict on testing them, but my hearing is good enough to enjoy most of the stuff out there that isn't too technical or complex.

Nowadays I don't even watch that much anime anymore, haven't picked a single new show from this season yet. I just listen to all sorts of web radios while playing muted flash games, stalk 杉田智和 tag on Nico and watch my favorite owarai shows every week.

It works — I did all 3000 kanjis in less than a year and I could not have done them without the method, but I have some reservations about how he teaches:
1) his method heavily uses imagination and imagery, which is good but there SO much more to memory techniques that he doesn't talk about AT ALL. I recommend you get acquainted with memory techniques at least a little before diving in: they require PRACTICE. All this really means is that it may be a little hard in the beginning but it will definitely get easier as you keep following his book — you will quite naturally learn how to use the technique more properly.
2) use Anki or another SRS instead of paper cards. It is MUCH more efficient.
3) some of Heisig's keywords are weird and even outright difficult. Since you have to be able to actually imagine the keywords, it's not of much help if you get e.g. the word "mandala" and have NEVER heard of it before. He also sometimes doesn't clarify the meaning of the keyword. E.g. he uses "stalk" as in "the stalk of a plant" and NOT "to stalk another person" which is sometimes confusing.

tl;dr yes it works but use it together with Anki or another SRS program.

I only learned one keyword -> kanji. Meaning I was able to draw the kanji given an English keyword. No readings, no compounds. This anon speaks the truth. I passed the N1 in December 2011 using the same methodology for only a couple of years. Only difference is that I also studied from a grammar dictionary, which helps tremendously with comprehension.

It takes dedication, mostly you have to make sure that you review your decks everyday. In my case, while I was actively studying, this took me about 30-50 mins a day at least depending on how many new cards I was adding. This excludes actual study time, it's just the daily review. This drops significantly as you add less and less new cards and older cards mature. I usually only spend about 5-10 mins a day reviewing.

Others have gotten by just fine with a smaller workloads, but once you get going and you're creatively making visual-spatial stories for 30-50 new kanji in a single sitting, it can be really fun. You lose track of time, and really feel like you've accomplished a lot each day.

Also if anyone is into learning how to translate effectively I highly recommend getting real commercial EPWING/LogoVista dictionaries off the net and completing this course book: http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415486866/

My satellite dish is pulling down the latest shows while they air from motherfucking SPACE. By the time you even see the OP I've already fapped and smoked a cigarette. And the latest moeblob you fell in love with this season? Three years ago I played the game the show's based, got the secret harem ending, and came on her face. And her friends' faces. All at the same time. Twice. You keep waiting for your precious torrents. I'll be standing in line at Comiket, getting the real deal from the artist himself.

You're a 2ch level otaku, you say? Hrmph. I am a mangaka level otaku, and you are as far beneath me as 4chan level otaku are beneath you. Think you're pretty hot with your bookstores? My pen is dishing out the latest stories while I think them up with my BRAIN. By the time you even crack the binding I've already signed a contract for the next one. And that h-game you played three years ago? I made my wife dress up as the lead and had sex with her for inspiration when I co-wrote it. I still have the manuscript for the bondage scene you'll never see. You keep waiting for your precious bookdealers. I'll be sitting in my studio apartment, making the real deal with my own hands.

I don't know one so I'll just give it in parts:
Flashcards: Ankidroid
Dictionaries: Yahoo, goo, wwwjdic, google search (yes). Don't just use jap-eng, use jap-jap and synonym dictionaries, thesauruses, everything. They all have their value.
Handwriting recognition: Microsoft IME (jot them on paper if you can't access a PC in the moment)

I'm so /jp/ I'm trying to learn moonrunes. Wait, that's not all that /jp/ after all. I'm not a NEET or hikki (I wish I were, though) and I don't get autismbux. I don't even own an onahole (just a couple of Tenga eggs.) I suck at 2hu but love the AT series and have read a few VNs.

So, not very /jp/ but I like the laid back style of this board. A bit too much 3DPD lately and a lack of hikki threads which were always fun to lurk, but such is life.

The same programs/books/websites used to learn Japanese in general; you just pick out of the resources according to the skill you want to acquire (reading, speaking or comprehension).
In your case (reading), focusing more on learning the kana and kanji seems to be the way to go, but no matter which aspect of the language you're after, it all boils down to learning grammar, getting some vocab under your belt and branching off.

I'm pretty much like this guy. I never really got into touhou the same way most of /jp/ has. I've played the games back in the day and I appreciate the characters somewhat, but I just never really cared about them particularly.
All I do is steadily read eroge / moege for as much as I can everyday and do anki/wanikani reps and whatever other reading I can find.
I wish I had more time to read though, Business Major and the only reason I have time to make this post is because my class got abruptly cancelled.

>NEET or hikki
Why?

Such people are hated, even by /jp/ and other places. Besides, it was already established that many here had jobs and a healthy life, anyway. That could also tell a lot about people claiming to have a 2D-complex as well. Past NEET/shut-in threads were also filled with dishonesty, with the exception of people being true. But, /jp/ isn't some haven from normals and will without a doubt get worse. Whatever.
