Why doesn't ZUN make new games with existing characters? This baffles me. It would not only make sense but it would make a shitload of people happy and it would be great for Touhou. I'd love to play against the SDM or the Moriya shrine again and I doubt I'm the only one. Come up with a new incident, tell us more about Remi or Patchouli, or hell have Alice cause an incident.

I'll admit that I haven't played the last two or three games, primarily because I can't get the fucking things to run, but I'll also admit that I don't feel any specific interest in them because the initial spirit of the older games seems absent.

So why does he keep churning out characters instead of actually paying proper attention to existing ones?

I've always thought it was because it's difficult for him to come up with a good excuse for the heroine to fight the same characters again (although it does happen). But if he does have an excuse for it, he can pull out something like ISC.

What if ZUN just starts killing off characters? What would happen if the next entry in the games or mangas revolved one of the humans dying in a danmaku accident like Sakuya or Youmu?

Sans the fairy manga, which depicts the fairies doing things I imagine fairies to do the rest of them were fully in the "cute girls doing cute things" niche with very little in the way of plot. I'm not advocating grimdark or overly complex stories but still...

He does it for the fighters. Besides IAMP and HM, all the fighters re-use every single sprite from the previous fighter while only introducing 1 or 2 new characters.

I'm not sure what ZUN's actual reason is, but I think its because he prefers to let fans expand upon characters, and makes sure he doesn't do anything that would shut fans out of the ability to do this.
