Given no archery, no interference, final destination, the only european swords contemporary with the armor featured would be too heavy to be fast. At the same time, most katanas were made from softer metal than said armor, so hits would have to be very accurate. It would come down to the skill of the individuals.

Something like an estoc would be very effective against the sort of armour samurai wore, and coupled with some late-medieval Italian armor, would have been fast, too.

But a knight wearing the plate in the picture would be more likely to carry a mace, morning star, or heavy sword of some kind rather than a riding weapon, wouldn't he?

>> No.124884

>>124757

lol wut? Knights were expected to be able to run and jump on to a horse while in full armor. They would not be slow, by any means.

>> No.124886

>>124859
The estoc wasn't exclusively a riding weapon but yes, you're right - probably a warhammer of sorts as opposed to a sword, although that'd depend on the time period.

European swords were no heavier than Japanese swords of the same length.

Japanese steel was inferior to European steel.

European armor was superior to Japanese armor.

Europeans had shields, axes, and other blunt force weapons such as maces, which are arguably more effective than swords.

European bows were also superior.

Both sides would rely on pole arms for the most part, and swords would be more of a secondary weapon in case of emergencies.

Overall, individual skill is the biggest factor, but knights have the advantage of better equipment, meaning they would most likely come out on top.

If we were talking army versus army, this would be the main deciding point - just look at battles such as Agincourt or Crecy.
