I don't know what you mean, most cities I've been to in Western Europe seem pretty clean. Switzerland is probably the cleanest country in Europe I've visited, even the stones in the sidewalks seemed to shine in some parts of the country (Geneva is pretty shitty though, lots of foreigners and what not). As an aside, Venice is likely the most overrated city in the world, absolutely awful. Verona, not far from there, was much more interesting. Most people don't give a single fuck about cleanliness though, it's just the individualistic western culture.

As for homogeneity, stay clear of big cities and their neighborhoods and you'll be fine. I just hope we'll remove kebab very soon, the fire rises etc.

I think it depends on what kind of an experience you want. If you want to see the sights, a guidebook would be the way to go. If you just want to experience the country in a way that a Japanese person might every day, just wandering ought to do the trick. But be aware that most streets do not have names and many buildings look alike, so it's quite easy to get turned around.

Aokigahara... That's all I can say. Go along a trail and then get off. Spend a couple nights there, with a sleeping bag and some food. It's an amazing experience if you can isolate yourself from people and perhaps meditate or just calm, maybe read or anything. There, you can, easily. You may find dead people but it's not as likely as you'd think if you read of it, it's not like there are corpses every few feet away from each other... Though if you spend a longer time there and wander a lot you might likely come across one or what may be one (decay makes it hard to be sure), still not necessarily.

Aokigahara is the very most amazing place on Earth, just please don't commit suicide if you go even if you hear spirits tell you to do it: and I'm not joking if you don't believe in spirits, I'm not trying to make this a religion issue because it isn't but if it's spirits or hallucinations from the person isolation, I don't know, it doesn't matter even. You might get the idea of "I should kill myself" if you are there for long, don't do it if you do.

I don't have any pictures that I took myself now though, I've taken many... They're all on another drive that's at a friend's but if I remember and it's interesting, I may post later. Here's one from some blog though.

There's no end to its appeal to me, maybe it's a relation to my interest in also morbid and horror things and as it has dark history and legends, or maybe it's that it genuinely is an amazing forest. Which it is. I recommend it.

A Kumamon-themed rental car - available in Kumamoto prefecture! Saw one of these at Mt. Aso. I didn't take a picture at the time because I didn't realize it was a rental car until afterwards, and I thought it'd be strange to take a picture of some guy's car...

I'm not sure where the photo was taken - I got it from Google. There are plenty of crepe places, mainly small shops or kiosks. They don't all have that kind of variety, though.

This photo's from Marion Crepes, which has shops all over the country.
