I'll be contributing a few songs to this thread.

My most favorite of all time is SMAP's Orange. It's not a dance or exciting song, but it's a song that really touches me. Brings back a lot of memories.

Mayo Okamoto's "Tomorrow" is also another great song. I think it was used as a cheering up song during the Kobe earthquakes back in 1995.

You really should learn Japanese to enjoy the songs fully. So many things are lost in translation, and it's such a shame to see people misinterpret a song the wrong way (i.e. Because I'm A Girl by some Korean group).

Season In The Sun by Tube is a timeless song.

I first found out about this song through a Korean cover back in 2001. I spent about 13 years trying to find who sang the song and just found out in April.

Ignore the literal 80's fashion and just listen to the song.

I've been trying to find catchy Japanese music lately but I'm having trouble. Every song I listen to feels like it conforms to an extremely boring Japanese "style" for lack of a better word.

I still haven't heard anything catchy or addicting like I get while listening to kpop.

I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything. I'm genuinely looking for interesting Japanese pop so I can practice listening comprehension.

Sayonara by Off Course is a song that I found while watching SMAPxSMAP a while back.

I didn't think much of it until I actually looked it up on a slow day. The guy has the distinctive Japanese voice that people love on the OST's for the dramas in Japan.

I'll throw in a few artists

AKB48 - I don't know much about them but some songs are rather addicting
>Koi Suru Fortune Cookie
>that Rotation song I forgot the name of

SMAP - personal favorite but idk if you like them since they are oriented for daily life singing and a shitload of K-pop boy bands copy them
>Lion Heart
>Kansha Shite
>Celery
>Donna ii Koto
>Ganbarimashou

Amuro Namie - A lot of female k-pop is derived from her and the songs I've posted are probably not doing her any justice
>Sexy Girl
>Yeah Oh
>In The Spotlight

Hitomi - used to be popular, went downhill
>Candy Girl
>In The Future
>Sexy
>Plain (this is a relaxing song I somehow got addicted to)

Golden Bomber - they are basically like the "trolls" of the JPOP music industry that makes songs like SMAP where anyone can sing them
>Memeshikute
>Dance My Generation

Seiko Matsuda - really old singer but her songs are rather addicting
>aoi sangosho
>cherry blossom

Perfume - you probably know them
>chocolate disco
>polyrhythm

If you like any certain genres I can help point you to some goods

Candy Girl by Hitomi has a really addictive beat and I couldn't get it out of my head for a few weeks.

Song is pretty generic but the singers rather strong voice and peach shaped face makes up for it.

This is probably gonna be my last recommendation (may come back later) for now

The video link is kind of random because it's an enka singing Seiko Matsuda song but she pulls it off really amazingly.

I'm fairly new to J-pop aswell, but here's what I'm listening to :
>Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
>AKB48 (Check out the sister groups, JKT48 sing in English)
>Perfume. Obviously.

Bit of a curve ball
>BABYMETAL

Just click featured videos on you tube and see what you come across.

My timeline
Started off with trance/pop
KOTOKO, 川田まみ, MELL, I've sound, etc
Then moved to the visual kei phase
Alice nine, the GazettE, Versaille, etc
I started getting into rock/pop rock after that
Flumpool, Weaver, UVERworld, Nightmare, ONE OK ROCK, TM.Revolution/ABS, etc
I decided to listen to enka/pop
YUI, 水樹奈々, Kylee, etc
Nowadays I'm more so exploring other genres. J-hip hop (HMK), J-reggae (Pushim), and J-r&b (ms OOJA).
