Haven't seen a general Mahjong thread in a while. Not just for Tenhou, but since it's the only Mahjong client I know of and apparently /jp/'s moonclient of choice...

Tips, complaints, etc. Hopefully some Akagi will pop up to balance out the failure that is extended Geass Sunday.

Usually. If you never steal a tile and win by Tsumo, you automatically get an extra han for "Concealed Tsumo". If you did steal, you still get extra fu, but fu barely matters. Just think about han when you're starting out.

More or less, yeah

Learn the different han values of different hands - you're going to need it, you can only go so far without knowing what you can turn your hand into.

Also, don't call tiles just because you can - always ask yourself if it's worth an open hand to get one tile ahead.

Riichi is basically Hong Kong with more rules added. The most important being: the Riichi (durr), Dora, many more hands, and a one han limit to go out.

You usually discard wind tiles early on, yes. Especially worthless ones to you. Pay a little more attention on how you discard the table wind tho because that's a precious tile, and be very careful on how to discard a table wind at the closing parts of the game

If you are new you should play a few games to find out how clueless you really are... you can't win without knowing certain things. Then learn your yaku, or at least the popular ones.

I have a question about scoring. Each of us learned to score differently so we don't know which way is the "right" way to score. The way I learned was:
20 pts for winning (40 for mah jong doy), 2 pts for regular pung, 4 pts if it's a special pung, double if it's inside the hand, then total points doubled for pung of dragon, your wind, wind of the round, all of 1 suit, etc. And you pay/receive points equal to difference between your hand and each other player's hand. Banker pays/receives double, winner doesn't have to deduct the difference, they just get their full point total.
The way my friend says it is:
1 point for winning, 1 point for everything I consider a double, and that's it. Everyone pays the winner, there's no side payments.
The other 2 people are worthless so they don't know how to score. Which one of us is right?

And one other thing: what the hell do you call the tiles with the Chinese character + number? My family has always called the mun, but no one knows why. Everyone else just calls them Chinese characters, mostly.

They're "man-zi （マンズ）" in moon anyway.
It's "man" because it's an old Chinese character for 10,000 (man)
Actually, all the suit tiles are based off money. The pin-zi are coins, obviously, but the "bamboo" tiles (sou-zi) are actually strings of coins, not bamboo

Is there any real difference between the "deluxe" internet version of tenhou and the standard one? The only think I noticed are a marble-like texture to the playing surface and annoying artsy versions of the tiles. Did I miss anything awesome?
