Just releasing a new game with original, well-thought danmaku patterns and characters, and lots of content that would make the game on par with Imperishable Night.

Have you played Touhou for more than a month? IN is not that good. It has a cheap continue system and an easy grab line. The characters are okay. I don't know why IN is somehow the holy grail of the series.

There are many better games. I don't personally mind the DDC engine. Nice pace, and very modern.

Sure, but simplicity is sometimes good for the gameplay too. Like I said, IN had additional content (with the B route and in spell practice mode with unlockable spellcards). Also, even though we can't really discuss tastes, I thought lots of patterns and BGMs were pretty memorable.

It's apparent to anyone with half a brain that ZUN put far more effort and spirit into IN than DDC. In DDC's initial release, there was a bug that crashed the game on lunatic with all of the A shot types, which means that ZUN clearly never 1cc'd with an A shot type on lunatic himself. And those are the shot types that are stronger for survival too. I won't comment on the system itself, because I have spent much less time with it than I have with IN, and in many ways rating the quality of a system can call upon lots of subjectivity, but I think it's apparent to anyone who has spent a year or so with IN that ZUN truly poured every ounce of his soul into that game. Just spend half an hour thinking about the various incentives that the various aspects of the scoring system set up; the way everything fits together is extremely clever, and it's so elegantly put together that you don't even notice its complexity until you get to really high level play. Even starting with something so basic as forcing new players to gather time in order to gain more continues to see later parts of the game, just brilliant. Moreover, the sheer amount of content in the game demonstrates how much time he poured into IN, how much he enjoyed the system he had created. Just look at all of the Last Word spells, hell just like count the number of spellcards in the game, the existance of 4A and 4B AND 6A and 6B. It has a huge variety of shot types unparalleled in any other Touhou game, and generally more balanced as well. Even looking at the challenges he created to unlock each of the Last Words shows how much heart he put into thinking about the player experience.

I don't think that a new game engine will save Touhou. The issue is, ZUN got married and has a child. He doesn't have the endless hours to dream of characters, stories, gameplay mechanics, and to implement and playtest everything with as much love and care as he did for the early games. Of course, the early games weren't perfect either: malice cannon was clearly unintentional, and EoSD scoring is basically just like glitch abuse to the maximum, but it's clear that these were very much passion projects, with a lot of passion. The newer games lack that sort of passion: sure, they look prettier, they run smoother on the new engine, but it almost feels like he's just making games out of habit, rather than letting his mind get lost in all of the intricacies of each latest project.

I should probably clarify: I don't mean to say that a new 2hu game needs to have a super complex system, or a ton of unlockable content. I'm just using those as indicators of the effort that ZUN put into the game, but when it really comes down to it, that effort shows in the patterns that the game presents you with. Vampires are considered to be a type of devil in Gensokyo. Youkai or Oni might be some kind of devils as well.

In some doujins, Devils are strong enough to take down a Dragon, since they once attempted a invasion on Gensokyo, but the Dragon made the Hakurei Border with the first Shrine Maiden of the Hakurei family (possibly Reimu Hakurei's ancestor) to protect it from them.

I can tell some people didn't play the PC98 Touhou games. It is full of Angels and Demons. One of the bosses is the Archangel Sariel. Also, there is the whole SCIENCE magic with Yumemi using Abrahamic religions for channeling.

One can't keep selling the same anime characters over and over, eventually Kancolle will run out of Japanese ships to anthropomorphize and it will start to get old.

Zun can keep inventing new characters for very long time indeed.

The key to the touhou boom hasn't been a sustained burn, it's a periodic burn. By introducing new games over long time periods, it gives people a chance to forget and rediscover the series, without exhausting the series.

That being said, all good things must eventually come to a pass.

Let's at least hope touhou has a good enough fan base by the time we invent good augmented reality though!

Hm, is Kancolle more popular than Touhou?

I played Kancolle for a while, but I eventually stopped despite really liking the characters. The game does very well to make you stay though; marrying your ship waifu then leaving is a horrible feeling.

I don't think Kancolle will be "in" for that long though; it'll be in like Strike Witches generals were in. Too little non-H secondary material to read and too much exposure as good fap material and nothing else. I still visit swg, but there's not much to discuss and it's usually only an image dump.(Though, you could say the same for most 2hu threads?)

Though, 2hu also has unbelievable amounts of fap material... but the non-H material you can read to explore the world is so immense that you can read for hours for years and you'll never get to all of it. And that's just the non translated stuff; if you want to also read 4koma, look at every single picture like some kind of autist, ect.

You literally have near infinite amounts of material online.

But honestly, 2hu won't ever die until Zun passes due to old age. Even then, there will always be a cult following. Some fuckers will probably make an anime/more games/homages as well, if Zun's child sells the copyright licenses.

Touhou has the potential to get a lot bigger than it is now, but that means pandering to everyone. People love fleshed out worlds with unbelievable amounts of material. You can get into the music, the shmups, the porn, the yuri, the fanime, non-H doujins about Gensokyo itself, ect.

Honestly it's rather prevalent; anybody who has watched anime casually and delved into Japanese culture knows about Touhou.

Hell, I got first introduced in... middle school when a random friend told me about "that really difficult/impossible game!".

I remember last year when I visited my cousin's house and inside her room, she drew pictures of every popular 2hu and posted it around her room. (I didn't comment, she's like 13)
