Anybody know what it's like for an American to live in Japan?
What are the professions to take so you don't look like the Japanese equivalent of a Mexican migrant?
What are the laws that are the most obviously different?
Any help would be great as I'm at an in-between spot in my life where I really could go anywhere and not give a damn.

Same as an immigrant in America: You'll be thought of as a funny speaking foreigner who should go home forever.

You get a proper job that transfers you over there or join the military and get transferred there.

Downloading a car is actually illegal and not just copyright infringement, and thus can get you jailed instead of sued.

You can drink in public, and people do, and they stumble drunk through the streets being ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend this for a foreigner, though.

You cannot operate any vehicle (including a bicycle) if you've had any alcohol whatsoever. None of this 0.08 shit, one sip and you're done.

As a foreigner, you have to carry your passport or your residency card with you at all times. If you get caught without it (police officers do occasionally stop foreigners just to check), you'll be arrested and maybe deported.

Don't do drugs. Possession of marijuana is considered a serious crime and it will get you deported in the blink of an eye.

As for jobs, go with teaching, m8. It's an easy job that provides you with a good experience (won't look great on your resume, but who fucking cares) and it's only a one-year contract so you're not stuck in a job you hate if it comes to that. After a couple years, maybe you'll want to go home. Maybe you'll want to try for another job. Teaching English gets a lot of shit, but it's really a good gateway opportunity.

It depends on where in East Asia you go. The further East you are, the more suppressed the racism is.

For instance, Japanese are pretty insular and racist, but its mostly suppressed. In other words, they'd rarely call you names or treat you with any sort of open discrimination, but they'd definitely be thinking about how weird and different they think you are the whole time.

You'll also find that you may be refused service in some places, but it'll never be done in any sort of mean or malicious manner. You'll just be refused and told nicely to leave. It's pretty rare for someone to actually just scream or yell at you.

The further west you go (Korea, China) the more openly hostile people get. They aren't more racist per se, but the racism tends to be on the surface a lot more. People won't hold back on yelling at you or getting in your face about things.

Japanese men hate American men. Envy works like that, but don't worry about it - it's packaged with fear, and they'll never say anything to your face.

Japanese women work differently. If you have blue eyes and aren't a fatass, you're in. Being tall helps too, but sensitive manlets can snipe girls with daddy problems who feel intimidated by macho men.

Likewise, chink men go insane for foreign girls. The more visibly foreign, the better. Blue eyes and blonde hair scores the most points.

Not sure where to ask about this. Anyway someone mention that there is a platform in kyoto where there's an 50% chance of surviving if you jump off it. What the hell is this about?

If there was some cheap way to import literally tons of stuffs from Japan I wouldn't consider it. I've found once a guide on how to put stuff in a giant box in a container on racketboy so I could go there for a few weeks and get all the stuff at once regularly, but I can't find it again.

Oh please. Weed is so easy to get here. And my company never drug tests so I don't get caught. ALTs are a fucking cancer anyway.

Not if you're a foreigner. They just passed a bill that disallows collection of welfare by foreigners in Japan, even if you'd qualify otherwise.

OP, this is basically how Japan percieves everyone else. They know that English teachers are the lowest of the low in our home countries.

The dutch aren't poor. None of europe is except "eastern europe." Western europe, and more recently russia, swindle the whole world. Just visit eastern europe if you want to see what the word "poor" means, it's right in your backyard. Or right across the street from Yerrup, there's northern Africa.

has anyone tried gaming the Tourist Visa? I think my plan will work. I am trying to set up a business that I can run through in the internet, move to Japan and then take a cheap flight to Korea or Taiwan every 89 days. I guess it's risky since there's no unemployment benefits to fall back on and I'll lose Canadian residency but I don't how else to live there without becoming a shitty fucking English teacher

Haha yeah right. I've ridden my bike shitfaced so many times and I'm literally high right now. Japan seems tough on the outside but no one gives a shit as long as you aren't causing anybody trouble.

Teaching is the easiest way to work in Japan, but being a student is probably the best. You can study Japanese so that you can get a real job when you graduate.

Rumor has it they start asking questions after you do multiple Korea runs. I think it will work at least twice. I think it'd be easier to come as a student at a language school or something and run your business.

BTW, running a business on a student visa is also a legally gray area can of worms but you could do a part-time job legally or be careful about how you run your business.
