Small letters. That's not a reading problem, that's an eyesight problem.

Things that see in the dark have wide pupils. Wide pupils make things a tiny bit fuzzy. Kanji are complicated enough to mis-read when tiny due to overlap in strokes in the fonts, add fuzziness to it, and yeah, I can see her issue.
