Why is otaku culture dying

Touhou is dying, Type Moon is dying, 007th expansion is pretty much dead, etc.

Touhou is alive as long as ZUN makes shit for it (and, if you include the secondary scene, as long as people continue producing secondary content for it). Since all of them are continuing to do things, it's still alive.

>Type Moon is dying
They haven't done that much shit this last two years but how long do want them to milk a single franchise for, really? And Fate/kaleid Prisma Illya 2wei is airing this season.

Not on the software side, but they've put out a manga, light novels, and sound dramas for a variety of things. Fate/Apocrypha is up to volume four.

Of course, nobody cares because Japanese, which is probably what OP is really complaining about.

>> No.12262045

Otaku culture is a direct response to the constraining and overworked culture of japan.

As time pases those restrictions loosen up so there is less need for art.
Since what drives artists is the need to escape and be free it only works as long as they feel trapped.

So my prediction is that otaku culture will become mainstream and bland, while there will be a new and very small subculture that opposes modern internet ideals.

Otaku culture isn't "dying". Nothing lasts forever, Touhou and the popularity of these other projects wouldn't last forever. As something starts to be considered old or dated by their audience, it's only natural for people to shift their attention to new or innovative concepts.

It's the same damn thing with Kancolle, which a lot of people consider to be the Touhou killer for some reason; it'll enjoy its five minutes of glory, then people'll move on to the next big thing with lewd character designs.

Or what, did you believe all these things would be popular with everyone forever on this magical bubble where no other franchises are ever developed?

>> No.12262280

Otaku culture is not dying, its just that otaku culture *as /jp/ knows it* is being replaced by new trends.

Old VN/doujin blockbusters are being replaced and becoming more niche, because the market allows for it. While this means that everyone in Japan gets what they desire, due to the thriving online trade, it also means that the Western batch of translators and competent weebs, who are not exactly growing as it is, cannot simply put their efforts into a few series and get bang for their buck. A lot of it passes through the filter, and unless it something simple and linear like anime dialogue, it is not a job that any shmuck can do.

I mean, Niconico has plenty of great videos and funny fads still being released, but all you hear on /jp/ is how it is infested with tweens because the old grapevine on IRCs and imageboards has deteriorated and no one hold-hands them anymore. Same with the VN scene and doujinshi scene.

At the end of the day, you have to face that otaku media is inherently domestic and esoteric, and that you will lose plenty through context unless you know the language or you actively try to be up-to-date on all the latest happenings.

You know, I don't actually give a shit about Kagerou Project - it's the kind of thing that I feel like I won't be able to appreciate until my Japanese better - but that was something that I thought should have belonged in /jp/.

Of course, nobody actually wants to use /jp/ for anything, because of it's reputation for being complete and utter shit, so /a/ is just eating our lunches.

>> No.12263418

/jp/ was doing great when it actually had a "reputation for being complete and utter shit". It only died when it became /a/'s cool summer house.

They were always talking about "our" topics on /a/ in their own shit way and it never concerned anyone on /jp/ any more than a thread on reddit would, back when the userbases were separate. The problem now is that there's no "us" and "them" anymore. It's mostly "them" around, and trying to talk about something with "us" will only end up with "them" showing up telling you to go to "their" threads elsewhere.

>t's mostly "them" around, and trying to talk about something with "us" will only end up with "them" showing up telling you to go to "their" threads elsewhere.
That's a nice story, but just that. The reason nobody makes Kagerou Project threads is because nobody in /jp/ gives a shit, and even if someone did, he would have nobody to talk to.

Yes. And nobody in /jp/ gives a shit because there's nobody left "in /jp/" to give a shit. Just a bunch of tourists visiting specifically for some single old niche topic that somehow manages to still keep an active discussion (at best) or just out to shitpost (at worst). That's the shitty reality.
