Mixed feelings. I haven't played SA for a good while (nearly a year), and certainly don't plan on returning to it. The game is, however, a lot more relaxing to play in Stage practice, maybe even so that I could call it a nice experience.

Spent a couple of hours relearning my old route, and didn't really do new stuff. A few changes here and there to make it fit Stage practice a bit better. I accidentally finished the second non at a bad spot, losing some score, and didn't safespot the finale, as I couldn't quite place a finger on where the spot was (this was my first run that got to Satori).

Considering the dropped grazes and spell bonuses in this one, 75 million doesn't sound bad at all.

I'm a bit excited to see what the other shot-types can get together. ReimuC and MarisaB should have fairly interesting routes for gathering every single point-item in the stage.

>> No.12196405

Trying for a no-item clear of ISC. So far I'm 51/75.

Day's 1 to 3 are clear, and 4 to 6 have anywhere from 1 to 3 no-item clears left.

I'm still working on days 7 to 10, but I've cleared at least a few scenes in each.

Practice-run for Sukoata that happens next weekend. Very suspicious stage route, missing tons of fairies. Good Mokou fight, though kinda shaky past Fujiyama. Failed Possessed by Phoenix to streaming. Very sad moment. I cried. Very poor grazing on Hourai Doll and Imperishable shooting, but I somehow didn't get hit on either. Yay for luck.

Pretty good for what I can do. To realistically PB again by a margin larger than 10m or so, I will have to learn new things. All of which I think are difficult, so that's going to take a while. Probably not in time for Sunday, but then again, I don't know if I'd do HMD considering the 1 hour timelimit. Next PB hopefully near the 3b range.

>>12218432

Part 1 (Answer on a scale from 1 to 10. You may expand upon your answers):
>A) How good do you consider yourself as a Touhou/STG player?
3. I remember I used to think I was super hot shit when I was blazin through lunatic 1cc's and the like, but then I got demoralized a bit because I set my initial scoring goals too high and now I'm just rusty and shitty at everything. Hopefully I can continue to improve in the future.
>B) How good are your reflexes and reactions?
5. It's hard to tell. When playing under pressure like at SukoAta this past weekend, I felt like my reaction times were quite good. In general though, I feel like I've seen parts of the game so many times that I can't help but zone out for most of them, so reaction times sort of become irrelevant.
>C) How good is your bullet reading ability?
3. This is something I've slowly begun to realize I'm quite awful at. Becoming good at a lot of static cards has sort of made me complacent and bad at path-finding in general. I find it very difficult to learn how new kinds of bullet trajectories work, but maybe I'm just always too tired when I'm playing.
>D) How good are you at controlling your movements?
5. Depends on the shot type. On my most played shot in my most played game, I generally know where I am at all times without ever looking at my sprite, but in other games I feel very clunky and often run into bullets that I think I've dodged.
>E) How dedicated and patient are you as a player?
4. I think I have far too much patience. I rarely feel pressured to go for goals, and as such don't practice with a very serious mindset. I would like to be more dedicated, but real life often gets in the way. I try to content myself by being active in other facets of the community, but ultimately I would still like to someday become a scoring superplayer.

Part 2 (Answer freely):
>A) How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?
I don't remember when I joined. I first got on IRC sometime in march 2013 apparently, and I had been posting on /jp/ and watching streams since a bit before then. It's only been about a year, but it feels like forever.
>B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?
Imperishable Night. It was my first game, which I picked because people seemed to say it was the easiest. I spent a long time working on a normal 1cc, read the wiki a lot, learned all of the mechanics, and just generally became comfy with it at my own pace. I think I got into streaming around when I got my normal 1cc in that game, and suddenly I felt much more pressured to achieve other 1cc's fast. It was probably good for my development as a player, but I never really got quite as comfy with any of the other games as I did with IN.
>C) Do you prefer survival or scoring oriented play?
I think that scoring tends to be more exciting from a player's perspective because there's just more to think about all of the time, whereas high level survival feels more like a lot of tedium punctuated by moments of extreme difficulty. Scoring is also addicting in the sense that once you start learning how to score, it is almost painful to force yourself to play a safer route for survival purposes that scores poorly. Or, at least that has been my experience. I am an awful scoreplayer though, so don't count my opinion for much.
>D) What are your greatest achievements? Why?
I guess my IN LNB was the most difficult thing I've accomplished. I've learned some parts of the game in greater depth since then, but I have yet to complete a more impressive run.

>>12218705
>E) Give a rough assumption, how much do you play per day.
Please no bully.
>F) What are your goals for the rest of this year?
I want to learn a good route for the stage portion of IN stage 4, Kaguya's last spells, and then complete a run that doesn't kill familiars on stage 6. In general, I want to just get back into playing more regularly, and maybe pick up MoF because it's a pretty game and every time I see people playing it I feel a strong urge to play it myself. I should probably also get around to 1ccing DDC hard and lunatic, which I've neglected.
>G) How much have you improved during the past year?
I guess around this time last year I must have been super new, so, sort of a lot proportionally. I guess a year is a long time. Hopefully I can achieve some good things in this coming year.

Part 3 (Answer freely):
>A) Do you keep track of what other people do with the games?
To an extent. I don't really know the difference between an entry level score vs a mid level score vs a world class score in any category other than IN lunatic, but I try to keep up generally with what people are playing and what more experienced players think of each other.
>B) Do you visit any Touhou or STG related communities other than /jp/? If so, which?
The only place I visit with any regularity other than /jp/ is #kusoplay.
>C) Do you enjoy watching replays or videos of Touhou and STG's?
Yes. Replays are a bit frustrating to use as reference because on linux, I am unable to speed up the playback speed for some reason. Thus, I usually record replays as a video file, and then refer to that when I need to look things up. More generally, videos are nice, although I do find myself sort of partial towards archives of livestreams I watched or heavily produced things like Arf's works than simply gameplay footage, unless it is a game that looks pretty and that I haven't played much myself.

>D) What do you think of livestreaming as entertainment and the STGrillz site? Do you think it should be improved or purged from the OP's?
I think livestreaming is a wonderful way for players to get to know each other through their gameplay, which adds some depth to interactions beyond rehashing the somewhat limited selection of STG-related conversational topics that exist. It's also just super cute. I find it often more enjoyable to watch livestreamed stage 1 restarts than a WR replay, even when the livestream has no mic. I think STGrillz has done a decent job at facilitating the watching of livestreams and bringing awareness to new members of the community. It does have some problems with people streaming unrelated things, but I have a fast computer so it's not too awful to scroll past them for me.
>E) Do you have an idol? Why?
I have several people I look up to in the community for various things. I won't namedrop them here at risk of derailing the thread, but working with the Touhou community here has introduced me to many wonderful players, wonderful programmers, wonderful community managers, and perhaps most importantly, wonderful friends.
>F) Do you wish the Western Touhou/STG players discussed more with each other?
I think that plenty of discussion happens between Touhou players, but I'm also intimately involved with a big chunk of the community. I do sometimes worry that they have formed tight cliques that are hard for outsiders to penetrate: certain groups of voices are definitely heard very often, while other voices are never heard hardly at all. I suppose it's only natural that some people should be more talkative than others, but a steady stream of fresh players is what we need to keep this community alive in the long run.

>How good do you consider yourself as a Touhou/STG player?
4
>Reflexes and reactions?
3, I'm slow.
>Bullet reading?
4
>Movements?
7, I've mostly played the easiest shot-types to control recently, which has hurt my ability to manage dense and complex patterns with fast movement. I've learned a few new positioning and control related tricks for the characters I play, though.
>Dedicated and patient?
5

>How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?
Roughly five years.
>Favorite game?
I like IN and PCB. If I had to choose one it would be IN.
>Survival or scoring?
Scoring is what I've mostly done, but I still do the odd no bombs run every now and then.
>Achievements?
A handful of IN and PCB replays, and a couple of route contributions.
>Hours per day?
I've long since forgotten what active play is like, around three hours a week or so. It's fairly relaxing.
>Goals?
Improve my PCB hard score by some eighty millions or so. I haven't planned on what to do after that. Maybe finish the projects I started with IN Extra Reimu and Normal Marisa.
>Recent improvement?
Not very much. I've learned a few things, but my dodging has gotten shabbier due to not playing so much anymore.

>Keeping track of other people?
I still look at some people on Twitter and keep up with what gets uploaded to gensokyo.org and Royalflare.
>Other STG communities?
Some IRC channels are full of Touhoufags, but they're not meant for Touhou talk. I sometimes visit streams of people I used to communicate with, and check a few forum threads once a month.
>Replays/videos?
Yes.
>Streams/STGrillz?
It's alright. The non-Touhou streams could be kicked out.
>Idol?
The people I used to look up to are either long gone or don't talk to me since they hate me.
>Touhou player dicsussion?
I don't know how much they discuss with each other. I wish these threads weren't so devoid of content. I guess all the people who play nowadays really aren't from /jp/, but other websites.

Part 1 (Answer on a scale from 1 to 10. You may expand upon your answers):
>A) How good do you consider yourself as a Touhou/STG player?

Fairly good, relatively speaking. Of course, many, many players are far better.

>B) How good are your reflexes and reactions?

Not very.

>C) How good is your bullet reading ability?

Quite good. I think this is what makes up the bulk of my "skill" at Touhou, besides the obvious (knowledge).

>D) How good are you at controlling your movements?

Not very.

>E) How dedicated and patient are you as a player?

My patience is my strong point, it makes up for my lack of skills, I can grind all day and not give up.

Part 2 (Answer freely):
>A) How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?

3 and a half years

>B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?

Fairy Wars. Cmbination of exciting/fun/tasteful.

>C) Do you prefer survival or scoring oriented play?

Scoring is all I do.

>D) What are your greatest achievements? Why?

Shoot the Bullet runs. Because hard.

>E) Give a rough assumption, how much do you play per day.

Since April it has been around 8~ hours a day on average of Shoot the Bullet. Some extreme days I play 12 hours or more.

>F) What are your goals for the rest of this year?

To get many high scores in Shoot the Bullet

Part 3 (Answer freely):
>A) Do you keep track of what other people do with the games?

Somewhat, but I'm busy player

>B) Do you visit any Touhou or STG related communities other than /jp/? If so, which?

Farm.

>C) Do you enjoy watching replays or videos of Touhou and STG's?

Yes, but I don't do that much nowadays

>F) Do you wish the Western Touhou/STG players discussed more with each other?

Perhaps. STG players that don't play Touhou are very ignorant about the games, which is a bit sad, and spreads various misconceptions about them. Touhou players generally do not care about other STG which is also sad. These things would need to change before any reasonable discussions could

>Part 2 (Answer freely):
>A) How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?
6 years
>B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?
Thunder Dragon 2. The visual design, audio design and stage design is top notch, and the large amount of secrets and caravan-style stage layouts allow for lots of expansion of play styling at your own pace.
>C) Do you prefer survival or scoring oriented play?
Depends on the game. Some games are more fun to play for score than survival, some they're basically the same, and some aren't fun for score at all. So maybe score oriented, since I tend to avoid games that I don't like the scoring on.
>D) What are your greatest achievements? Why?
Hishouzame 2-ALL and Gemini Wing Normal ALL. The former because it's the game I've played the longest and one of my favorites, it was very exciting to reach a long standing goal of mine. The latter I feel was great because it was one of the harder clears I've reached within a handful of days.
>E) Give a rough assumption, how much do you play per day.
My approximation would be about an hour per day, but it's generally more concentrated in bursts than that.
>F) What are your goals for the rest of this year?
Hishouzame 3-ALL, Battle Garegga ALL, Armed Police Batrider Advanced ALL.
>G) How much have you improved during the past year?
I don't think I could really answer that well. I've noticed improvement through my time playing, but I can't exactly tell how much better I got at each part of that. I think I've improved quite a bit since last year, but couldn't really evaluate the magnitude of that improvement

Somewhat. I don't really pay too much attention, but I enjoy watching streams and I follow the progress of a few players that I feel have a lot of potential.
>B) Do you visit any Touhou or STG related communities other than /jp/? If so, which?
I am a common poster at shmupsforum, though I'm starting to drift away as I become more aware of how generally bad the community is. I spend a lot of time on a few STG-focused IRC chatrooms, which are great and incredibly helpful.
>C) Do you enjoy watching replays or videos of Touhou and STG's?
Yes, I find watching replays to be incredibly insightful and I think it helps me improve without even playing. I think it's more enjoyable when there is commentary, written or spoken, which makes streaming even more appealing.

>Part 3 (Answer freely):
>D) What do you think of livestreaming as entertainment and the STGrillz site? Do you think it should be improved or purged from the OP's?
Livestreams are a fantastic alternative to the "real" arcade environment, and I think a centralized database of STG streamers like STGrillz is a great help to share around who plays.
>E) Do you have an idol? Why?
I guess I have several 'types' of idols. On the one hand, I really idolize the skills of people like T3-Kamui, and Yusemi-SWY. Their scores are seriously sick and their dedication to their games is commendable. On the other hand, I also really idolize how quickly some people have grown, people like Aquas, and os-yom.
>F) Do you wish the Western Touhou/STG players discussed more with each other?
I wish there was a better medium for discussion within the community. *chan style boards aren't great because they're terribly temporary and discourage names. Normal forum style boards have the issue of requiring a very tight balance of strictness -- to prevent discourse from becoming poisonous and encourage mechanic and skill conversation -- and looseness -- to attract people to discuss in the first place.

Part 1
A) 4/10 on a good day.
B) I'm a fucking god at deathbombing in 2hu games for no reason, because I have the reflexes of a dead dog otherwise. So 2/10
C) Depends on the game since I usually get through things by memo. Otherwise, 3/10 since I can pull off some RNGG's
D) Awful 0/10. I overshoot all the time.
E) 5/10. When I want to get better, I go all in and really push myself, but when I lose that drive it's gone instantly.

Part 2
A) A little over two years now, I started in June of 2012 with PCB.

B) It used to be TD since I liked the music and it was a relaxing game for me. But recently I haven't played anything but Crimzon Clover, it touches me in all the right places.

C) Survival, scoring is intimidating. I might give it a shot with CC once I can clear Original.

D) TD Lunatic 1cc

E) Anywhere from 0 to a couple hours. It depends how motivated I am any given month.

F) Crimzon Clover Arcade Original 1cc, maybe go back to 2hu and pull a LNBNT out of TD too.

G) Difficult to say since I haven't played that much. Although I would say I've definitely grown a bit as a player and have begun to expand my horizons a little.

Part 3
A) Sort of, I tend to just cheer everyone on no matter who they are. I show up to livestreams and the like to do that. I don't hound leaderboards or anything, I rely on others to get me that kind information.

B) Just the #kusoplay channel and a spattering of Skype groups that die as quickly as they rise.

C) I tend not to since I stubbornly prefer to learn the hard way. I see their value however.

D) Livestreaming pulls a community together and helps make said community more visible which is a great way to attract new blood. I do a little of it myself, just to let anyone interested see how I'm progressing and to share my gripes with the world.

E) Jokingly, Cactu, since his loli-infused EoSD scores inspire me.
Seriously, yog, his sheer dedication to the genre is very obvious and I respect that a lot.

F) I'm not super familiar with all the facets of the western scene, but from what I gather it is very fragmented. Things could be done to help fix this, but it probably isn't needed.

5/10 In games, quite good, but in life, terrible.
>C) How good is your bullet reading ability?
7/10 My deaths rarely come from misreading bullets.

6/10 Most of the time I'm ok, but other times I'll die at stupid places. My inconsistency is probably my main flaw.

Part 1 (Answer on a scale from 1 to 10. You may expand upon your answers):
A) How good do you consider yourself as a Touhou/STG player?
>6/10, have only beaten IN and PCB on lunatic, and just barely.
B) How good are your reflexes and reactions?
>7/10, Sometimes I reflexively panic bomb in games like DS and Last Word of IN.
C) How good is your bullet reading ability?
>6.5/10, sometimes I'm too confident in my abilities and end up dieing. Need to bomb more.
D) How good are you at controlling your movements?
>6.5/10. Playing the bonus games like STB and DS help a lot.
E) How dedicated and patient are you as a player?
>7.5/10, I've attempted Reimu's Last Word (Fantasy Heaven) about 150 times in a row one day, I was so determined and it was frustrating. Eventually I beat it. This kinda thing happens occasionally.

Part 2 (Answer freely):
A) How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?
>Started Touhou I guess about 3 or 4 years ago, started taking it more seriously about 2 years ago.
B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?
>Can't say a single game, they all have their own things which I like. Have spent the most time on IN though.
C) Do you prefer survival or scoring oriented play?
>Survival, though scoring is interesting. I'm simply not at an acceptable level for scoring I feel. Haven't beaten most of the games on lunatic.
D) What are your greatest achievements? Why?
>Beating PCB probably. I was shaking and becoming numb due to stress near the end, best feeling in the world when I beat Yuyuko's last spellcard.
E) Give a rough assumption, how much do you play per day.
>On average I guess an hour, sometimes I don't play, sometimes I play a lot.
F) What are your goals for the rest of this year?
>Beat MoF on lunatic, I once got to Kanako's VoWG and was so close but ended up losing, now I'm determined.

Part 2 (Answer freely):
A) How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?
4 years of Touhou.

B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?
Perfect Cherry Blossom. Because it was the game that defined Touhou for me. Best cast, music and spellcards.

C) Do you prefer survival or scoring oriented play?
Scoring. I enjoy taking risks.

D) What are your greatest achievements? Why?
EoSD Lunatic clear. It is rare that I beat a Lunatic mode at all, seeing I stick to the lower difficulties for scoring. The dedication and learning is worth it.

E) Give a rough assumption, how much do you play per day.
A few hours per day on average.

F) What are your goals for the rest of this year?
To continue embracing the game without frustration.

G) How much have you improved during the past year?
I feel I've reached a peak this year, with only slight improvements starting to come along slowly. I still make plenty of mistakes due to anxiety issues in my life.

I don't usually visit livestreams, so I'm not too bothered.

Sat in stage practice for approximately three hours (which was first supposed to be twenty minutes) improving my score by some 200k (which was supposed to be some 2M).

While the missing couple a hundred grazes would be fairly simple to grab, I'm not going to bother. I'm going to leave that and the few missing point-items for someone else to do. - Whatever the hell controls when those small fairies that carry one item die in the first big fairy portion, I have no idea.

Was considering trying out Lunatic since there was another submission, but I'd have to put some effort into it to piece together a route, so I probably won't bother.

The first one is forgettable, but you might as well if you're buying the pack.
The second one uses a polarity system and dynamic difficulty levels (although you can lock the minimum difficulty). It's fun.
The third one goes back to not having a polarity system, but it's also quite good.
All in all, they're some of the better bullet hell games on steam, so they're worth that price.

1 - Point blank enemies with shot to rapidly build up break gauge and break rate.
2 - Once the gauge is about 150% full, activate break at the first major scoring opportunity (huge wave of enemy ships, blowing up boss components, etc.)
3 - When you break, use the invulnerability frames to set up a max-lock on shot, giving you a large multiplier.
4 - Point blank enemies for massive points, multiplying a large break rate with a large lock-on modifier. The duration of the lock-on multiplier can be extended by destroying tons of enemies at close range.
5 - When your gauge fills again, activate double break.
6 - Repeat steps 3 and 4.
7 - When you run out of break mode, repeat steps 1 through 6.

I'm not so good at scoring, but that's the general idea (copy-pasted from shmups forum). Planning to beat Arcade Original with all shots. Finally made some progress today!

Because in time attack it feels like the meter grows faster with higher multipliers which lets you shift into break which lets you rack up your multiplier faster which lets you double break if you get in before the break crashes blah blah blah rambling

I don't know if there are any score ratio differences between small and large ships. Popcorn rushes are good to break on at least because you can point blank with all your shots hitting for a while.

There also seems to be a technique where you point blank a ship as it comes on screen, abusing the invulnerability so you can shoot it for score while locking it and still get a lock kill off to get your multiplier. Echoes of Ketsui, probably something I won't get right outside of stage 1.

Since timing out of break reduces the break meter by like 20% or so, is it better to just bomb out of break if you're not gonna hit double in time?

Mind you I think Time Attack uses a slightly different ruleset from regular play, it's a lot more centered around well timed and profitable breaks from what I can tell.

You spend half the time on the top side of the screen blasting the shit out of everything at point blank before you find yourself getting some distance because the bullets have suddenly become fast as hell or because you need to wait until the screen is overflowing with enemies and bullets before clearing it all. Pretty much. Shooting things during break in general gives a lot of stars. This obviously means you want to fit in the most amount of double breaks possible in a particular stage. Destroying bigger ships with lock-on helps maintain the timer even longer.

B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?
IN because Youmu/Yuyuko is my favorite team from all aspects. They really compliment each other both gameplay-wise and dialogue/story-wise.

B) How good are your reflexes and reactions?
4/10 Bad, it's all memory for me.
C) How good is your bullet reading ability?

D) How good are you at controlling your movements?
7/10 for some reason I am great at unfocused which really boosts my confidence.
E) How dedicated and patient are you as a player?
7/10 My most patient was when I unlocked PCB EX. I memorized routes from replays and played for 6-7 hours until I could get through the whole stage without dying or bombing.
Part 2 (Answer freely):
A) How long have you played Touhou, or STG's?

B) Do you have a favorite game? Which is it? Why?
I love PCB, IN, and MoF equally. They are all masterpieces of atmosphere and composition.
C) Do you prefer survival or scoring oriented play?
Survival
D) What are your greatest achievements? Why?
The most memorable moment for me was for the first time seeing Mokou respawn after Hourai Doll and opening up her Imperishable Shooting. It was very euphoric.
E) Give a rough assumption, how much do you play per day.
I play every few days for 1-3 hours, so about an hour daily.
F) What are your goals for the rest of this year?
Capture Flandre and Suwako. That was my goal from the start, actually.

I had only beaten a few Normal routes last year, but now I have a few Hards and EXs under my belt.

Preparing double break mode (DBM) might need some hard ways like always point-blanking enemies. If you failed usually you don't have enough energy when you reached the scoring spots.
Just take easy scoring spots and sacrifice another "hard" ones to make sure DBM ready.
Stage 1 scoring spots :
- Early stage
- Water section
- Pre-boss popcorn
If you're doing early stage DBM, you might not have enough energy for water section. So it would be safe to skip this and prepare DBM for water section.
Water section. Started from the bridge, first Break Mode used at the 5th wave of tanks when Hydrosphere coming. DBM used when 2 Hydrospheres coming. Incoming enemies pattern is fixed, it's like 2 Aegis -> 3 Aegis -> 2 Hydrosphere.
Eventually you'll have Break Mode available for pre-boss popcorn area, but getting DBM is hard, you need some bullet cancelling from the last 2 Hydrosphere after water section DBM.

Stage 2 scoring spots :
- Early stage
- Laser canon fortress
- After mid-boss popcorn
- Pre-boss
Take Energy bonus from stage 1 boss so you can do early stage DBM. Started when first incoming popcorn and ended at the laser canon fortress.
You can do another Break Mode before mid-boss, but don't use DBM.
At mid-boss you can use DBM before mid-boss dead, be aware that getting multiplier bonus here kind of hard, usually the counter run out before popcorn ended.
Pre-boss DBM started when enemies on railway coming. Kill Volcano with full lock-on to get more score.
