I don't play kancolle so I don't think I'll buy merch, but appart from a couple of lines from a seiyuu, what contents is there?
Because I'm under the impression that it's just a shallow, niwaka friendly, cute girl factory to sell merchandise.

So besides being a ship and having ~20 lines what is there to know about the girls that isn't their lewd bodies?

And you're absolutely correct. It's a crappy social browser game-type, so the lack of depth shouldn't be a surprise.

There's a reason some of the more hardcore military otaku crowd avoids the game, since the military content is so superficial.

How do they manage to keep people's attention when they update so slowly? I mean when I quit, I had just about every ship, and enough resources to dump into LCS to get the ones I didn't have.

>Midway hasn't even started yet?
Yeah, turned out that Spring '14 event (the anniversary event) wasn't Midway, but it was based on the assault on Port Darwin. When did you quit?

>How do they manage to keep people's attention when they update so slowly?
Small, frequent updates each time, with the occasional major update. New maps (and new BGM to go with it), new voice lines, UI updates (which included a major overhaul for the anniversary update), the like. Extra operation maps give you monthly medals which you can trade for blueprints, which are needed for certain 2nd remodels. Oh, and the new day battle mechanics.

It's been quite slow since all the hype's on the inevitable Midway; people have been stockpiling just to prepare for it, since apparently the devs are aiming for a 15% clearance rate.

>How many new ships have they added since then?
Most of the new additions were destroyers (Z1, Z3, Hamakaze, Tanikaze*, Amatsukaze*, Urakaze; were you around when Yayoi and Uzuki were added?). Those that weren't were BB Bismarck, RS Akashi* and CL Sakawa*. Kai 2s added after Jintsuu were Kirishima, Tone, Chikuma, Ryuujou, Haguro, with Hiryuu, a DD, a CL and a fast BB coming up. The German ships got 2nd remodels (zwei) quite soon after they were released, too; not that their zwei forms are that good or anything.

*Introduced in Spring '14 event; still currently unavailable otherwise

>Welcome to moe.
Moe is largely dependent upon characterization. Archetypes are moe because the visual elements refer to certain (often implied) narrative/character patterns. A cute character is often insufficient in eliciting moe response unless she uses symbols that have gained moe status over time. At any rate, moe necessitates some engagement with a "narrative" (used in a very loose sense).

Kankolle is more in line with "chara" and brand icons, but it's using sex appeal and moe aesthetics to hook. As far as I know, there's no real narrative to engage us emotionally so I wouldn't say it's moe at all. Given how shallow moe conventions themselves can be, it's really something to say Kankolle is more like a bad imitation of it.

They're based on WW2 ships, so most of the characterisation is based on what happened to their historical counterparts. What they did, how they sank etc. It's not much, but I wouldn't say there's no characterisation.

>> No.12171383

>>12171367
Actually, yes. Putting them into a context like that they could very well be moe, but it's a pretty cheap tactic. I thought it was nothing more than a collection game. Like you would get really pretty art, but nothing "moe" per se.

The more involved you get (i.e. the more characters develop), the more moe a character gets. I can only hope that Kankolle at least offers novel permutations of the moe archetypes, but you know, Strike Witches got by without it (though it did eventually have adaptations with some semblance of story). I hope it dies down soon. It really bothers me to see something so shallow get so much hype. Not that that's anything new.

>>12171375
>What they did, how they sank etc. It's not much, but I wouldn't say there's no characterisation.
I'm actually not even sure how that would play into characterization. Does it shape their personalities? Like a warship that sank a lot of enemies turns out hot-headed and needlessly aggressive or something? That could actually be moe AND interesting, but something tells me it's not like that at all. Something tells me it's a vicious cashgrab using pretty girls and mock-historical novelty for people who don't really care about either. I don't know anything about Japanese warships, though, so I can't really say.

>> No.12171407

>>12171383
>Like a warship that sank a lot of enemies turns out hot-headed and needlessly aggressive or something?
Not exactly, but there's a distinct difference between, for example, base Yuudachi and her 2nd remodel, which was a reference to her last battle. Not all of them are like that, though, as far as I can tell; I don't know enough about the ships to give a clear answer, either.

That said, it's true that there isn't that much characterisation in the game, so most of it is in the manga spinoffs. There's an anime coming up as well; you could check it out to see if there's any characterisation there.

It bleeds through in some places. Nagato is proud as fuck of her Big Seven status, Kongou is British, Yamashiro and Fusou are ancient, terrible, and profoundly unlucky. Ikazuchi always wants to help people, Kaga resents Fifth Carrier Division because they declined to show up for Midway, Maruyu is pathetic because that's how the Maru Yus were.

A lot of characters' in-game characters have nothing to do with their history, though. The fandom has taken on itself to expand their characterizations or make the relevant historical connections.

>Kaga resents Fifth Carrier Division because they declined to show up for Midway
I don't think it was because of that. If I'm not wrong it's because Kaga's captain deemed the 5th CarDiv crew inexperienced as compared to the 1st CarDiv's (and maybe 2nd CarDiv's as well), and there's also the fact that the Shoukaku class carriers were also newer and more advanced.

Hmm. If it doesn't really show the progression they might as well be two different "characters" and only in the barest sense of the word.

>There's an anime coming up as well; you could check it out to see if there's any characterisation there.
Heard about this. Given the source material and the hype I'm not at all interested. I watched Strike Witches and it was alright for some service, but in retrospect it was a huge waste of time. And that's probably what I'm at a loss for when it comes to the popularity of these things. Why would you burn so much money and time into something so utterly insignificant. Out of all the possible ways to spend your limited time, why this? Touhou has a heavy creative aspect in the community and even the worst moe series have some story to offer. Do people just want to be part of something?

Visiting a hobby store just so you can laugh at the nerds playing cards seems like a pretty normal thing to do.

Kancolle has a manga, right?

How much it expands the characters?

The new janitor is a retard, but not a try hard. He's rarely here.

AoC is for sure a mod and he loves KanShit also.
