OP, I've gone to those shady places plenty of times and hung out with a bunch of cool Yakuza dudes and dudettes. They're a little gruff and intimidating at first, but so long as you keep smiling and talk slowly, clearly, and a bit loud so they can understand you, they'll warm up to you real fast.

I remember this one time I went to a seedy looking bar, I'm talking super seedy, and was greeted by Yamada-san. I could tell he was in the Yakuza cause he was missing part of his pinky finger and he has this gnarly tattoo on his neck. Anyway, after we said konnichiwa to each other, he told me my japanese was really really good and we had a good chuckle.

From there, we just had a real nice time sipping some sake and he introduced me to his Yakuza anikis. They were real cool too. They told me about their biker days and all the fun times they had being chased by the cops. They all wanted to practice their english with me, and it made me laugh to hear their silly accents.

The lesson is that Yakuza people are very fun to hang out with. I would put this in my top ten of things everyone should try to do when they go to japan along with singing karaoke with a stranger, and talking to schoolgirls.

If you approach Kabukichō any evening of the day, prepare to be aggro'd by niggers talking to you in English trying to get you in their shitty hostess bar. They literally stand at the same location every fucking single night of week.

Most of these places are fine if you are foreigner, they only care about your money. Don't bother going anywhere without having at the bare minimum 20K yens available. Obviously if you don't speak a single word of Japanese, it's not going to be super entertaining and good luck for finding an hostess speaking even some basic English. (Hell even finding maids who speaks English is easier.)

Some restaurant/bars where all waitress are bikinis and such are "acceptable" in the triangle between the Shinjuku JR St. ~ Marui ~ Shinjuku Sanchome St.
Try to go there with a JP speaker at least.

Japan's nightlife is actually pretty dangerous for a foreigner. I would suggest not taking part outside of sushi bars and the yakitori/beer shops that suits go to.
