Oh yes, get the JR for sure. I assumed you were already in Tokyo and wanted a ticket. The JR pass costs maybe just a little more than your round trip ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto, but certainly you'll be riding a lot of trains when you get to Kyoto. And they are not cheap! definitely get the JR rail pass, it prints money. Seriously, it's a fantastic deal, and since you can use it for the shinkansen you basically pay for it in one go. No question!

Yeah seems like the budget friendly idea considering the cost. This is my third trip to Japan but have only been as far out from Tokyo as Hakone which was fairly inexpensive.

I was reading on JR's site that you have to get manually buzzed through the gate's with the rail pass, you know if thats how it works or maybe thats just certain situations...

It's not 55,000 yen between Kyoto and Tokyo!! Round trip it's 26,000. The rail pass varies depending how long you will stay, but here's the chart:

Assuming you'll be there for two weeks that 45,100 yen, worth it if you'll be going out to kansai and traveling around a lot. I tend to bust through the ticket gates myself but you might not be that ballsy. Still, it's a good deal, and will give you the freedom to travel more.

I used my friend's parents pass after they left (it still had a few days left), and you just flash it at the ticket gate. They don't even look at it most of the time, and if they do they'll be checking the date and waving you through. We took a trip down to hiroshima, on it, and it even paid for the ferry to Miyajima! The passes are great. A day of traveling around local and rapid trains can easily cost you $50 or more.

Yeah I got the 14 day one, it's worth it if you're going on multiple shinkansen trips. Saved me about 500 bucks.
If you're already in Japan you're out of luck though, you can only buy it outside of Japan and you can only use it with tourist status.

It's easy enough to meet your friends/relatives at the airport, get the thing stamped there, and use it with them though. Once you have the pass no one will hassle you at the ticket gates of stations. In fact, no one will hassle you at the ticket gates at stations. I've jump-kicked through ticket gates before without anyone even saying anything. I've saved hundreds by buying the cheapest ticket then busting through the gate at my true destination. All it does it make little ping-pong noise that happens every 15 seconds or so anyway. The guys at the gate just tune those noises out by now. Just walk away into the crowd any there will be no problems. At gates with only one place to go through closely guarded I usually pay, but otherwise it's (almost) free travel for me!
