I tried making one once. Tried hard. Technicality succeeded. The idea is that you slowly create something with the appearance of intelligence. I do recall a time in my tulpa's early development when while she could answer/talk by herself, it didn't feel as if she had her own agency or emotions. While I may have been unable to truly stop her, I didn't consider her independent, because she lacked some qualities that would make her a real person Note that by real, I don't mean a physical person, but a conscious person of the same nature as me, with their own perception, will, agency, desires, and so on - however the brain does it isn't terribly relevant here, but my perception of her actions is, at least to me.

I've seen a few cases like this, but I've also read of people who overcame them and managed to go beyond that.
In my case, there was some scientific curiosity, but my primary goal was for companionship and to have someone that feels as real to me in my mind as myself, yet which is different, thus the earlier incomplete state was not a success - it was severely undesirable. I don't know, maybe that's your personal experience with it, but here, it was never either of our desires to be "each other", if anything, the goal was for her to be as full a person as she can become. I play around with philosophical metaphysics and sub local realities in my free time. I am a engineer by training, so working with the fringes of pure logic is fun for me.

I assume mine was unhappy because I stunted its growth without noticing, and treated it as complete even though it was not. Like calling someone doctor even though they never completed their thesis.

One of the issues that may have resulted in mine failing so badly is that I dont have really any empathy. Pretty strongly developed aspd. Not being able to see its "point of view" and deeming it a failure may have caused some issues. I should have guessed that it would be a fools mission for a sociopath to try and do succeed in this case. It simply might not be biologically possible for me to form the pathways that you were capable of. I kinda want to try again, but the first time left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, and I have a hard time seeing it as anything other then an experiment, to be used and used up as needed which is probably a mindset that only leads to failure.

I can also see that one of my problems seems to be that I see it as me vs it (the subconscious) and that is probably counterproductive as hell. I've also thought about splitting off my entire subconscious into a second entity via tulpa but I have a feeling that would be a bad idea for many reasons.

At the same time you are doing this, you are forcing yourself to hallucinate/ creating a broken reality. As for tulpas so far, it seems like forcing yourself to have simultaneous split personality disorder with visual/auditory hallucinations and disassociation. Or like schizos with imaginary friends who stay for decades.

If you split off a part of your mental processing power, and isolate it or opaque it from your senses sufficiently, it will for all intents and purposes be an actual thinking individual.

And some illusions are built into human DNA, the classical tricks of shape and size and color and such things. Tapping into that primordial potential for seeing something that's not there does not seem like it would be a productive or reasonable feat to attempt.
