In big cities things will be fine. Especially in tourist regions people will be exceptionally friendly and helpful.
In rural places people might stare at you - this isn't racism, it's often because they haven't seen a white person before.

'Japanese only' signs exist because places have had bad previous experiences with Russian tourists or Koreans, etc. It's not because they hate you or non-Japanese in general.
Either accept you can't go there, or if you are a Japanese speaker or are with a group of Japanese friends you probably be allowed in.

There is racism in Japan, but it's not as much name calling and shit like that, and it's not as common as you'd think, and really, all these signs that say "No foreigners" outside of pubs and stuff, they are usually not places your typical gaijin wants to go to anyway, or your typical jap either.

Racism exists in Japan, but in forms of people might avoid you if you're a 7 feet tall black person, more because they're scared rather than they're looking down on him, because no jap will look down on a 7 feet black guy.

Many times they avoid gaijins because their own insecurities to be able to communicate with them, sure, some gaijins can speak japanese fluently, but there's a bunch out there who only know a few phrases, and to avoid the awkward engrish, they avoid them, doesn't apply to all japanese people either, many of them are not "racist" at all, and would gladly talk to foreigners.

Even there if you speak the language and talk with the Yakuza they'll probably let you in.

In a wider sense it's not "racism" but rather that Asians countries appreciate racial consciousness. You will never be Japanese as a white person, even if you were born there and speak fluently. You will always be part of the "out-group".
