What do people think about the new game so far?

I'm having a blast of a time, and I've already had to use my cheat tools on three cards. It's also resurrected my ridiculous celebratory dances from the good old days of StB.

I'm looking forwards to going back to tackle the harder ones no-item, and figuring out how to completely cheese the fuck out of others.

The explosion doesn't activate when she's stopped, and the activation zone slightly lags after her when she's moving. It's just a matter of positioning yourself so that it won't cover you until she's stopped, and activating the mallet early enough to hit before she starts moving again.

I'm surprised with myself, I managed to do most of day 10 with items other than 10-3 which seems to be just pure chaotic dodging (even with the doll, there's no way I can manage through all those bullets to put a doll in a corner once the first one is gone). Pushed through Miko's and Yukari's bullshit by spamming lives and got Remilia's tag by zig-zagging and using the bomb every few times.
Any tip for 10-3 other than git gud?

If you put the doll directly on tenshi's head close to her hurtbox, tenshi will block a huge number of bullets for you. Just make sure you are able to place the doll behind her head a second time.

Well I despaired slightly the moment I got to day 3. I no itemed every stage previous(except for Sekibanki's laser barrage of many many lasers that continuously get faster as the card goes on) then found out the new items I got didn't get counted for those no item clears.

Is there something like this for subitems so I'll be better off just playing with items until I unlock everything or can I go back?

Also is there any practical way of no iteming that card besides being extremely good or extremely lucky?

Yes, it is better to clear everything with items first until you unlock all items.
You can use sub items, and will still get the no-item clear, so I suggest unlocking them. (yinyang for smaller hitbox, doll for spreadshot against suika and tenshi)

To do Sekibanki with many lasers, just get lucky once. I found that the more I move, the more likely I'm going to get hit.
First, I thought about circling around her, but that way I could get a timeout, which of course doesn't count.

Assuming you guys are talking about 2-4, circling around works if you concentrate your shots on the heads. Once you destroy enough of them, you can stay safely under the body and finish it off, just barely in time.

Only a single restream needs to be done of that card. The rest is micro streaming.

For the single restream, make it as tiny as possible and do it fairly early.

Position her such that she warps from the bottom boundary and appears from the top. This can be a bit tricky to do at first, but it's the best way to do it no-items.

The heads use a wave patterned based off your position when they fire. In my experience if you start at the top left corner and go down under, and then repeat with the right corner going to the left. You can get a bit of time between waves to deal some damage, if done right you can finish with a good amount of time left.

160 which is my second highest number of tries on day 9, after 9-1. Use doll sub and sit above Suwako. It deals more damage and you have more time to dodge the bullets from below. Suwako moves every time a big green bubble spawns so just move away for a second to avoid being headbutted. These big green bubbles also spawn the most bullets when they hit the bottom of the screen so watch out for that too.

I'm still confused why ZUN choose this newhu as a character for a game that's obivously a successor of the tengu games. Aya would be more fitting since it's her series and she's a tengu - using magic items are a tengu's usual powers.

1. Jizou - a default item. You can play as you normally would, with the added ability to make several mistakes. And since there's no truly undodgeable danmaku in the game, there's no reason not to do that, unless another solution is really obvious and superior.
2. Doll - pretty much a free pass through most aimed cards, and there's a lot of those in the game.
3. Bomb - if you clear the screen, there's nothing there to hit you. Enough said.
4. Mallet - an extremely satisfying and surprisingly effective way to take down enemies. If you hit them first, they have no time to hit you back.
5. Camera - see bomb, but only useful for clustered danmaku coming from the direction of the opponent. Has its uses.
6. Fabric - only really useful for highly structured, patterned danmaku.
7. Ball - Teleporting is potentially extremely helpful, but it's too difficult to control efficiently.
8. Umbrella - See ball, but with a slightly different and somewhat more limited use. Ability to hide has no advantage in a game that requires you to shoot your opponents to submission. Maybe if there were more timeout cards...
9. Lantern - maxed out jizou gives three seconds of immunity more even if you do nothing and just let yourself get hit. Fucking useless.

1. Doll - shoot enemies more efficiently. Yes, please. Literally a lifesaver.
2. Mallet - a default for structured danmaku (more efficient use of strategically chosen item).
3. Jizou - a default for spread out, chaotic danmaku (unless you also use it as a main item, in which case mallet gives you more of the same).
4. Ball - Makes dodging easier if you're already good at dodging.
5. Camera - you can use some speed in many of the cards.
6. Bomb - Limited in use, but does give you a potential new strategic option.
7. Umbrella - See above.
8. Fabric - I can't think of a situation in which it'd be needed, at least in this game.
9. Lantern - useless. Items for which it does something just don't work well as last resort.

Not really. Jizou is not an ultimate cheat, it's a fallback option for when you can't think of a strategy, and it's useless if you can't dodge well in the first place. It only bothered me whenever it could have been used strategically in a way that made other items redundant (i.e. instead of hiding with a fabric or clearing danmaku in front of you with camera, just stay there and take a hit). Sure, it's too powerful and I think it should have at least been nerfed down to, say, make you unable to shoot in the invincibility period.

I think I'm more bothered by the doll, because of how fucking obvious it is. Though there's thankfully always some downside to using it later in the game that makes up for its extreme effectiveness earlier on.

While every other item would normally be used up if this happened, the umbrella requires a direction to be held while up against a screen making it near impossible to use in most situations. Which makes it ideal for no item clears.

10-6(Need to get a clear idea of laser paths for horizontal movement opportunities)

10-1(lasers are fixed so copious memorizing might work here on finding safe places to dodge the yellow bullets)
10-2(Feels like I can no item this with gratuitous amounts of pause buffering)

10-9(Entirely controllable so I either need to figure out a workable loop or watch a replay)

Day 7 was rather disappointing.

It had some of the easiest cards to no item despite being so far in.

The only really difficult one was Sanae's random search snake laser card.

Marisa's spark cards are stupidly trivial to avoid. Sakuya's cards are middling, and for Youmu, one just needs to stay in the lower right corner of the screen in general.

Also tip for those who find Sakuya's switch places card annoying. Move up right next to her each time she freezes time. You'll both deal more damage and have an easier time with the knives once you get your mind past the initial hurdle of not running immediately into Sakuya trying to weave through the knives you were closest before the teleport.
