I would like to request the translation of a very weird horror RPG game in a lot of senses.

It's title is "The Abaddon Princess Sleeping in the Rotten World" (腐界に眠る王女のアバドーン) by the company Sakuraprin (さくらぷりん), done with RPGMaker XP.
http://vndb.org/v13066

It features a retro layout reminiscent of the NES classic "Sweet Home" with PC-98 era CGs (which can optionally be seen as regular CGs). It's a small and short game with a very contorted plot.

What may put off potential translators is that it features lots of yuri and yaoi (which can be turned off, by the way), gore and NTR thrown in all directions. The CG pack can be seen at sad panda and the whole game (which weighs around 300 MB) can be downloaded at sukebe nyaa.

Would any of you be interested in translating such project?

It's a cakewalk to translate an anime episode or a manga chapter (I'm not talking about timing, typesetting, and so forth), but to translate an entire medium-length visual novel is nothing to sneer at.
Unlike anime or manga, visual novels require their translators to not only have a vast understanding of both L1 and L2, but also to be able to construct literary and stylized sentences in L2.
It's not a hodgepodge of utterances, screams, short thoughts and pieces of banal narrative — it's prose proper (however low may its quality be) and has to be approached as such.
Now let's assume an average visual novel to be 40k-line long (though Clannad reaches 100k and 仏蘭西少女 is almost 150k). That gives us 830 A4 sheets without any spaces between lines (38 lines a page). Converted to a novel format it could easily reach about 1200 pages. That's a whole damn lot.
People who translate vns lack any sort of background knowledge enabling them to tackle the task effectively. They either have insufficient skills or their motivation is short-lived.

Translating a vn is a very long process that requires a number of people to devote a significant chunk of their time each day, week, month. After several weeks they might just burn out and either start plodding very slowly or drop their project entirely.

Also, just for comparison sake — average Azimov novel size in his Foundation cycle is 400kb-700kb, and thats in fb2 format, including tons of internal stuff.
Pure size of VN scripts, with nametags and other misc stuff cleaned out:
Rewrite: 5.5 mb
Genrin no Kishougun 1 and 2: 4.4 mb
MLA: 3.8 mb
Cocoro@Function: 3.9 mb

Average VN is same size as whole Foundation series together. And it took years to translate each of Foundation books for professional translator, who actually graduated as translator and had some writing background.

I translate for a living myself and know exactly how arduous can translating novels get. I'm not defending picking up a project and dropping it a month later, but it's fans for fans. I'd never translate a 200-page novel pro bono, just to bring joy to a number of people who can't be bothered to learn the language. Even for what I regard as decent money I can't sometimes bring myself to push on and keep my deadlines. It's a chore, it's a pain, and a single joke can sometimes keep you awake at night. And a vn the length of a rather voluminous fantasy trilogy? No fucking way.

That's why I'm overawed by people like Ixrec (my English and Japanese are not good enough for judging his translation skills, so I won't act out an adjudicator). The amount of text he translated is insane. And he did all that for free. And so did many others. You got to read a translation that someone had spent several months of their life to bring to you. And they did that for free. They deserve your gratitude.

And so to what I'm doing here... well, I'd like to eventually translate some short vn to my mother tongue. Translating things is a great way to improve the skills in two languages simultaneously, and my Japanese really needs some enhancing.

>>12103882
It's not about whether you believe it or not. The Foundation series as raw text estimates to about 70% of MLA's volume.

>> No.12103960

>>12103839
You also need to take into account how the text is encoded when talking about script sizes. Azimov wrote in English, and roman characters are usually encoded in a single byte, while most Japanese characters tend to be encoded in two bytes. After that, you need to take into account that it takes a different number of characters to write things in Japanese than it does in English. Lots of porn games are a lot longer than your average novel, but it would probably be a really bad idea to only compare their lengths on a basis of script size. Also, your numbers look really off.

>It's a chore, it's a pain

But he does. And the final product is both understandable and of decent quality. There are errors and flaws that you notice even when English is your fourth language, sure, but imagine translating several thousand pages in the span of a few years. If I could achieve such speed while maintaining his works' quality by merely not thinking about the text, well, I'd sure love it.

>>12103985
The final result is worth it. The process may be grueling, but seeing something you translated in bookstores, or being thanked for the effort by people on the internet is worth it. But were it not for the money it fetches me, I wouldn't bother with it.
Most people see you reaching the ending line, not the run that brought you there. And while sad, it's perfectly understandable.

The problem is that from the start he has never put much thought or effort into the details and as a result, despite all his reading, his Japanese is very poor because he doesn't care about details to improve it. This results in many translation errors caused not by his haste in translation, but by not actually knowing or caring about the meaning of the text in the first place.

It's easier to go by line/word count:
Koiiro's ~27k lines, with ~10 words/line (ero scenes makes that statistic a little wonky, but it's close). This makes koiiro ~270,000 words, which is about 3 times the length of an average romance novel. (http://www.literaryrejections.com/word-count/))

That's roughly 2 Catch-22's, 3 To Kill A Mockingbirds, or 2 Twilights (http://www.literaryrejections.com/word-count/)) to use more familiar examples.

And that's -medium- length.

I'm not going to defend poor quality because of it though, simply wish that more 'translators' would appreciate the magnitude of the work involved before they try to do it.

Again, a lot of eroge companies say things like this because they don't want their games getting outside of Japan and becoming the next Rapelay.

I mean I don't know the exact context so maybe they really did say something like "white pigs are inferior and don't deserve glorious Nippon eroge" but nearly every time I see people accuse eroge makers of racism it's just them interpreting things in a way to fit their narrative of "all Japanese are xenophobic."
