That's the problem with the anime; it doesn't take the "parallel realities" idea that exists in Clannad. It is because of the parallel realities that the routes should never have been merged. They should have done something like what was done in Higurashi. Start one route, finish it, then start another one. Then, explain what you've done later.

There's no reason for Tomoya to have Kyou's and Tomoyo's light orbs. The only ones he may have collected would be Fuuko's and Kotomi's. Anyway, I do not think the anime is giving too much importance to the light orbs.

I saw it as Nagisa's route the entire time...just with more interaction with other characters. I personally think this was the best way to go. I'm not a big fan of arcs as a whole, and I tend to pick my favorite and run with it in my head, which is basically what the anime did.

Also, Kyou accepts Tomoya's feelings in Kotomi's route, and that doesn't give you her LIGHT. In Nagisa's route, you can help Tomoyo achieve her goal of becoming President of the Student Council, and that doesn't give you her LIGHT.

LIGHTs come from happiness, not from acceptance of achievements.

personally i prefer the bad ends in this game. it seems to tie everything together better, like the relationship of tomoya and naoyuki, with the furukawas.

like all key games, clannad has its running theme as family (hence clan), and it centralizes the hardships therein. it's only in the bad end you get to see naoyuki and tomoya's realization of his own actions, and that's more valuable than preventing nagisa's death. that's just what i think

I loved Mei&Youhei's route.
When I looked at the list of routes to go through I thought it was going to be a small side story that didn't really have that much to do with anything.

It's in fact it's one of my favorite route in clannad.

That depends on how you see it; I can say Kyou is precisely like Tomoya. Just take a look at her own route and Kotomi's; she's almost always thinking of others, like Tomoya. So, they can understand themselves pretty well.

Sunohara said they are well matched, and even Nagisa was surprised on how good those 2 got along (if you choose Kyou as the 3rd player for the basketball game). The problem would be that Kyou's route never focused on growing up, just on romance.

Who Tomoya is the most compatible with is highly relative, in my opinion. Even so, I think Tomoyo would have been the best option for the main girl.

They also seemed to be having quite a good time in the epilogue in her route.

As the days move on, Tomoya and Nagisa continued to recreate the Drama club. With the help of Kyou, Ryou, Kotomi, Tomoyo and Sunohara, everything was finally coming together. The days passed by with Nagisa and Tomoya becoming farther and farther away from everybody else. I began to feel depressed, Tomoya-kun was moving further and further away from me.
After school came and I found myself waiting outside of Tomoya-kun's classroom. In a few minutes he came out and noticed me, I didn't say anything other than asking him to follow me. I wanted to spend more time with him, I wanted him to eat my bentou and read books together with him. We reached the library and I took out my keys, he then asked me why I wanted him to follow me. I asked him if he was hungry and that I made some extra bentou to eat. Tomoya-kun rejected, he said he had already made plans with Nagisa.
He left soon after and I headed inside the library. I stood inside the empty room filled with books, I felt like crying. But if Tomoya-kun were here, he'd tell me to be stronger and keep going. That's why I didn't cry.

Everyday I would bring up the courage to talk more with Tomoya-kun, but I could never find him. On weekends I would go over to Tomoya-kun's house and bring him some food, but he was never home. Disappointed, I would go to the library and bookstores to read to take my mind off of him, but it didn't work. I missed Tomoya-kun, I didn't want to be alone. I'd go home late at night leaving the school library, walking in the chilly night all by myself scared me a bit. After I get home, I would head for my room and read over the articles about my parents until I fell asleep. This was how my days ended.
The next day was a school day, I was happy because I get to see Tomoya-kun. I anxiously waited for everyone to show up in the drama club, but nobody showed up. I looked around the school but I couldn't find anybody. Tears began to form in my eyes, I couldn't find anyone, I couldn't find my friends. When the bell rang, I found myself inside in front of the library. The wind blew from the open window which blew the pages of the book on the table. I picked up the book and held it onto my chest.
"I guess... this is where I belong."

As I contemplated returning to my old way of life, the door to the library was opened ajar. Tomoya-kun was standing there, with his head down. I looked at him, but he did not look back at me.
He took some hesitant steps forward, and stopped a few feet away from me. I said my greetings to him, and Tomoya-kun greeted me back. Then he asked me if I wanted to share lunch. I was so happy with those words. Tomoya-kun had returned, to pick me up from my lonely world again. Or...?
We shared lunch silently. I let Tomoya-kun know that some of the food was a bit overcooked. He didn't mind, but he still wouldn't look at me when I tried to gaze at his eyes. When I turned my attention to my bento, I could feel him looking at me. But if I turned to him, he would immediately avert his eyes.
When we finished lunch, Tomoya-kun said it was delicious, and headed out. I wanted to speak out, to make him stay just a little while longer...
Tomoya-kun stopped before I could voice my feelings. He looked back at me, as if he had something he wanted to say. He stood there for a while, his eyes filled with doubt. Without warning, he turned around and ran out of the library.
"Don't go..." I said, but he was already gone.

Tomoya-kun started coming every day again to share lunch. I was happy that Tomoya-kun was there, but he would seldom speak.
Then today, Tomoya-kun stayed over after lunch, to watch me read books he said.
I started reading one, and when I was done, I looked up at where Tomoya-kun was sitting. He was asleep.
Without thinking, I stood up and went to his side. Then I started caressing his hair. His sleeping face became much calmer and peaceful when I did that.
After a while, he woke up. He looked at me, sensed me caressing his hair, and his expression turned into something strange. He looked like... he was afraid of me. But why was Tomoya-kun afraid of me?
He stood up suddenly and ran out without looking back. I was so sad I felt like crying.
There was something wrong with Tomoya-kun, and I didn't know what it was or how to help him.

The next day, on my way to the library, I ran into Kyou-chan and Ryou-chan. After we exchanged greetings, Ryou-chan asked me if I had seen Tomoya-kun lately, and I answered yes. Kyou-chan asked me if he had said what was on his mind. I didn't know what she was talking about, and when she noticed it, Kyou-chan became visibly angry. Tomoya-kun didn't come for lunch today. I waited for him patiently, but the hours passed and no one came.
It was time to go home, to my lonely home. The home where my parents lived, the home where I lived alone now, and the home... I once dreamt of sharing with Tomoya-kun.
When I opened the door to leave the library, the path was blocked by someone. It was Tomoya-kun. He looked like he had been standing there for a long time. In one of his hands was some bread he had probably gotten at the school cafeteria.
"Tomoya-kun... good afternoon." I said to him.
He didn't greet me back with words, instead he reached out and hugged me. I was so surprised.

He started talking, letting his feelings out. He told me about himself and Nagisa-chan, how he had started dating her, but when he was with her, his mind was always on me. Nagisa-chan had been understanding in the start, as she knew Tomoya-kun and I were childhood friends. But time passed, and one day, Nagisa-chan started crying. She said goodbye to Tomoya-kun, and told him to stop deceiving himself, that the feelings he harbored for me weren't those of friendship, but of love. That was the reason why he couldn't stop thinking about me even when he was with her.
Tomoya-kun had been trying to tell me this ever since the first day he started coming to the library again, but he was afraid. Afraid of my reaction.
My eyes, and his, watered. I hugged him back with all my heart. Staring into each other's eyes, we shared a warm kiss.
It had taken some time and tribulations, but Tomoya-kun was here with me. Tomoya-kun, my most important person, loved me as I loved him.
We kept holding each other for a long time, as if we'd never let go ever again. And truly... now that we had found our true feelings for each other, we would never let go of them.
"Tomoya-kun... welcome back."

Yeah, after getting Nagisa's normal end, which is the first path I played, I decided to start using a guide.

There's a number of suttle choices that you need to do to get to certain routes, and you pretty much have to be able to remember exactly what happens where and when without just choosing random options for five hours until you get what you want.

This presents the problem that in order to do it without a guide you pretty much need to know in advance what choices to use, which likely means you already did it, which means you're not doing it again.
