>From Dutch "Japan"

So we're in agreement now?

Although according to the Online Etymology Dictionary it was mostly China's fault.

>1570s, via Portuguese Japao, Dutch Japan, acquired in Malacca from Malay Japang, from Chinese jih pun "sunrise" (equivalent of Japanese Nippon), from jih "sun" + pun "origin." Earliest form in Europe was Marco Polo's Chipangu. Cultural contact led to japaning "coat with lacquer or varnish" (1680s), japonaiserie (1896, from French), etc.

This is just my guess, but it seems to me you're not enforcing the rule that vowels are pronounced exactly the same regardless of its placement in the word strictly enough. If you're pronouncing "kawaii" in the same way "Hawaii" is pronounced in English, there's already a difference between the pronunciation of the first 'a' and the second 'a'.

Basically, people don't mistake famous soundtrack composer Kawai Kenji for "Scary Kenji" because the difference just isn't that ambiguous.
