As a dual wielding thief myself, I can tell you right now by mid-to-late game that spellcasting is absolutely necessary to survive later on. This is probably true for any character except maybe multiple arm mutants.

As long as you adhere to the dual wield weight limit, you shoudn't be bogged down too much by the casting penalty; iirc, the cap douses out at 94% at best.

>>12041276
Your pool of potentially neat recruitables is lower because of the penalty you get for any race with "god" in the name. So, even Big Daddies won't work. There isn't a guarantee that some of the skills will still work as a pet either, since there is something happening that has changed some special actions to different ones when some unique NPCs are recruited.

On the bright side, the level requirement was recently halved, which makes it a lot easier to get the 100+ level guys when they'd actually be useful.

there is an easy way for lategame statgain.

you will need:

- cursed alcohol in great quantities
- a fairy
- a fishing rod
- okay fishing skill
- okay cooking skill
- some money to start several farms with

optional (but makes it faster):
- machine lure
- blood drain feat
- a sandbagged neutral monster
- healing rain

the main concept is that every time you feed your fairy some high-quality food (in this case, cooked fish), it will vomit up seeds. It will also be full - which can be easily counteracted by throwing cursed alcohol at it.

basically:

1. fish lots
2. cook it all
2a. (optional) use Blood Drain on a sandbag to get your stamina back fast
3. feed it to your fairy
4. throw cursed alcohol at it until it's no longer full
5. rinse, repeat
6. collect all the herb seeds and plant it for uber stat growth.

be careful that it doesn't die from anorexia. use healing rain as needed.

Unfortunately, the only fusion they've allowed doesn't actually fuse weapons together. You have to find special jewels in dungeons that are enhanced by the "awake of nefia" item. Would it be completely suicidal to play without pets as a Fairy Wizard?

I'm level 20-ish. I just dropped my pets off at the bar so I could grind a bit, and realized that the game is much more fun without them. 95% of the time, my pets would just destroy everything for me, and the other 5%, I'd rather be fighting the big boss myself instead of babysitting my little girl.

At the same time, as a pure caster of a very weak race, I think I'd be completely fucked once I ran out of mana.

Yerles is good because of the extra skill points, although picking Eulderna for the casting feats and magic resistance would be my choice personally.

After that, starting as Farmer will save you a lot of plat on essential skills like Cooking/Anatomy/Gardening, and I like polearms so the proficiency works in my favor.

Priest/Warmage will give you Casting as well, and more combat oriented feats, so you can pick something other then Eulderna, but you lose out on Anatomy. Also lose Cooking if you go with Warmage over Priest but you get better weapon skills.

Your class can be changed later with a business card, so you can get the class bonus of Wizard for reduced MP cost, or Warmage's higher success rate.

Though really, anything is viable eventually. Even Fairy with a lot of effort.

Keep them close by with the leash so at least they can't get killed outside your line of sight. This gives you a chance to kill whatever is wrecking them before it finishes the job.

Other than that you really can't do anything but the you're already sort of doing, which is letting them grind by killing enemies, giving them excess ores to sell, and giving them food/herbs.

Pets in general shouldn't really have to be making progress. Drop the ones who are causing you concern without a second thought unless they're REALLY special like a God Pet or a Bell. Otherwise Elona leaps in power far too much to really be worth the time needed to invest in them.

Specially when you could just use that time on your own character whose death carries far more weight.

Not at all suicidal, but you need to prepare a little bit better than other class/race combinations.

First, secure a good amount of Holy Shield books and start spamming it up. Since you get mostly DV on fairy equippable armor early on, the PV increase will be huge once you get it to a respectable level. You want to have it active all the time, which is a pain at first but gets better once the duration increases from levels.

Invest in some armor upgrades, the level depends on your budget, but aim to have at least everything +3 for starters. If you haven't joined the mages guild already, consider joining the fighters' guild for cheaper upgrades first, before switching. Even if your equipment is terrible, remember that even a simple bejeweld amulet gives you DV and PV with a small investment in upgrading.

Consider getting the ascetic feat line; as a fairy it's more or less mandatory to keep yourself alive, especially against some forms of damage (suicide damage cannot be mitigated). If you can kill Big Daddies, consider turning little sister in for hero cheese.

Lastly, decide on a physical combat style. Even unarmed will serve you well. It's simply not feasible, at any level, to kill everything by casting. You can dispatch easy enemies with melee and save mana for things that pose a challenge.

The bottom line is: PV, Life and a melee (or ranged) attack to conserve mana when expending it isn't absolutely necessary.

The spell itself is impossible to get via spellbooks, so you have to rely on dreaming or scrolls of wonder to obtain it, both very unreliable methods if you want to level it to manageable levels.

That said, it's great to use during boss battles for decoys. If I recall correctly, they also drop a pretty decent Artifact glove if you kill them enough times.

You'll start to notice that as soon as you level higher that dungeons don't scale linearly with your level; the monsters don't match the dungeon level, but the level range of the monsters can range from 1 - (whatever the dungeon level is).

If you get the black gemstone of wake up Nefia, it automatically scales the monsters' levels to that of the dungeon, no matter what tier they are.

Solo isn't hard at all, but requires the kind of knowledge you only get after a couple of playthroughs to not die over and over and lose more progress than you make. The biggest problem is that you have to deal with everything yourself. You can't let a pet go ahead and see if that monster you've never fought before is a pushover or will eat your face. If you're stuck in a bad place you can't hope pets will save your skin. All the monsters will fully focus on you, so you have to be ready to take on anything and everything.

That said, if you can pull it off, playing solo is a lot more reliable than having to herd a bunch of pets around, so once you know how much you can handle, you don't have to worry about your pets doing something stupid.

The most important thing is to be prepared. Aim to be immune to most status effects (blind and paralysis especially, since being paralyzed can mean death, and blind can't be cured with healing effects the way dim, confuse and poison can), have failsafe ways of getting out (escape scrolls, teleport scrolls), measures to heal yourself in a pinch, change creature rods, wall creation.

Then you need a little strategic common sense. If you're in a room with 4 manageable monsters and one monster you don't want to deal with, zap a teleport rod and teleport it away instead of teleporting yourself. Kill the easier monsters, and wait for the harder monster to return then focus your full attention on finishing it off. Use corridors and doorways to your advantage; remember that you can plink even the hardest melee hitter to death if there's a snail between you and it in a 1 tile corridor.

Knowing monster specific tricks (for example wet bomb rocks don't explode, toss a random potion at them and render them helpless) also helps. Play slowly and carefuly, read up on monsters you encounter for the first time on the wiki, and death should stop being an issue.

>> No.12052989

>>12052959
Good luck! My typical solo starting strategy is to do a few delievery quests to get some platinum and money. Buy cheap glass equipment from blacksmiths for extra speed, and upgrade it to +1 as money allows. When you're confident you won't die to a hermit crab, head on to Yowyn, enter gardening quests and harvest to increase your stats. Go around to every town, collecting glass equipment and useful rods (teleport, magic damage rods for bursting down bosses and difficult monsters). Pick up the small medals from every town, they are enough to buy a hermes blood, bless it when you get your first bottle of water and boost your speed a bit.

When you've buffed your speed a bit, do before it's too late quests, they give considerable amounts of money. Use the money to upgrade your equipment further to +2 or +3.

Go through the Puppy Cave a little bit, for more glass equipment, books and useful rods, oracle scrolls to trade with adventureres and jewelry to trade for quest items.

Once you've assembled an adventuring kit with all the items you need, clear all the level 1 to 10 dungeons you can find. You'll get money from the final boss, cure corruption potions and small medals for more hermes blood. And most importantly, fame. Once you reach 20000 fame, quests can reward up to 2 platinum points, so it's a good point to start completing your skill set. Start collecting inferior material scrolls to turn items with good stats to glass and improve your resistances and immunities that way, invest more money into your gear (and shops for a bigger selection of items). Once you reach 30000 fame and can get 3PP for quests, take some time to farm quests and get all the skills in the game. Invest in all the magic vendors to level 50 or more for potential potions, and then it should be smooth sailing to ridiculous powerlevels.

considering speed drinks are quite plentiful in the dungeons, it's a waste to spend the medals on this. you're better off getting the shield tonfa.

>> No.12053005

>>12052993
The shield tonfa artificially boosts your damage, which is not always a good thing. I'd rather keep my damage as low as possible, to level my combat skills, instead of killing low level monsters in one hit then finding my accuracy and damage modifier failing me on monsters that can't be killed with a simple raw damage boost. It also does not apply to all combat styles, and while its defensive attributes are good, resistances are much more important to get in the early game when you hit hounds and baptists. A speed boost will help you for your character's entire lifetime, whereas you'll toss the shield tonfa sooner or later for something more useful. It's also a no go for fairies, not without flying scrolls.

But this is all a matter of prefference.

>> No.12053014

>>12053005
in the long term it's better to convert to magic anyway, and the shield tonfa (and a good rifle/shotgun) will keep you alive until that happens. grinding up combat skills is just too much effort for not much gain compared to how quickly magic ramps up.

as for accuracy, this is where Zero Shoot comes in.

>> No.12053029

> you'll toss the shield tonfa sooner or later for something more useful

Not really. The great thing about tongfas is that if you have more than 2 arms and you have a tongfa equipped, you don't get the casting penalty for dualwielding. This, plus the nice defensive bonuses, makes it useful all the way to endgame. My current endgame loadout is Vital Flayer, Kindness Blade, Frisia's Tail, Shield Tongfa, with the Sealed Shield in the Shoot slot. Obviously a lot of flying scrolls went into making this work.

I would argue that it's worth the scrolls to make it usable on a fairy mage, too. Though in that case obviously you don't get it until later.

>> No.12053051

>>12053014

What you're saying is theoretically sound, but it assumes that the player wants to be a mage, or have multiple arms (and break dual wielding for melee attacks), respectively. Using the term endgame is deceptive since it assumes the average player has clearing absurd void levels or beating inner gods as a final objective.

I preffer giving new players pointers that make their life easier without making assumptions about the play style they choose, or assume they will put in absurd amounts of grinding to reach setups like multi-wielding god weapons.

the point is that if the shield tongfa is good enough when you're fighting abominations of the void, it's good enough for the early and midgame also. you can stack the resistances in the other slots.

for soloing start, I don't think going heavy melee is a good idea, considering you don't want to get surrounded. tongfas have an obvious advantage going ranged, and shield tongfa is probably the best tongfa you can find. ergo, it's worth the first fifty medals

The shield tonfa won't help you do before it's too late quests, harvest vegetables in time or get an extra performance in there. It won't help you outrun enemies or get your turns faster to survive strong spell damage. And if you want to pump absurd amounts of base damage into your ranged, you can find a pair of decent claws and upgrade them (you also get to choose the material and may get some extra mods if you're lucky).

Being surrounded should never happen unless you get terribly unlucky with one of the open area dungeon floors and are allergic to wall creation. I always found melee to be easier to start with, two hand especially since it's accurate and damaging even with a bad weapon. Fighting things in melee lets you gauge your ability to take damage, whereas ranging encourages you to take risks and die when you just didn't expect a titan to be behind the corner.

hermes blood gives +8 speed. that is puny. you can average 1 speed drink per dungeon with reasonable luck. I'm not too convinced it's worth buying over, say, scrolls of growth.

the shield tonfa, on the other hand, gives huge damage and PV. especially PV: +30 PV at the start basically doubles your effective HP. not to mention both damage and PV are boosted when you enhance it at the blacksmith.

far as quests go: seven league boots solves most of your escort quest problems (having a rough idea of how many days it takes to get from A to B helps also). harvest quests don't really matter whether you succeed or not - they're mainly a way to train up strength/gardening safely.

on being surrounded: shit happens. shit happens a lot less when you're not constantly getting in melee range of monsters that you may not know the strength of. especially since some of them will be faster and can appear out of nowhere.

>> No.12053246

>>12053150
The average race has 70 speed, 8 speed is a rough 11% boost in the ability to deal damage, take damage, and complete quests. I don't think it's by any means puny, not for a starter character, unless you inherit gear (in which case you can inherit something that makes the shield tonfa even less worth purchasing). My estimates of speed drinks are closer to one speed upper, for 1 speed, every 10 dunegons and 1 hermes blood for every 100. I haven't kept the exact count, but my current fairy solo character has 239 speed, and I bought 10 bottles so far. That adds up to 120 base speed, 80 bought speed and 39 looted speed. If I refrained from buying hermes blood, I'd have 159 speed, and would be in a significantly worse position.

Seven league boots help, but getting them also means sacrificing a wish that can be used for something else, just to walk faster on the world map. And losing the platinum you can get from harvest quests while training your stats adds up to a considerable waste, especially for a skill starved starter character.

The image you posted doesn't illustrate being surrounded, it illustrates not knowing how to handle a room. Open the door from the side, step back (if possible), peek inside. If the room is full of things you don't want to piss off at the same time, retreat and draw out the ones that detected you, using wall creation to close off the room if necessary. If you blindly step into a room it can very well be full of some kind of suicide enemy and then you'll die, melee, ranged or otherwise. Also, the PV from the shield tonfa wouldn't do you a lot of good here, lightning breath and all, whereas speed to gain a superior position would.

>retreat and draw out the ones that detected you, using wall creation to close off the room if necessary

I would point out that those strategies all work better with a ranged weapon. I will say, though, if you find yourself resorting to various novel strategies because the monsters are overwhelming otherwise, then it's a better bet to grind more and/or get better gear and come back later.

after that you will find that wishes rapidly decrease in utility and becomes mostly a house renovation spell. SLB is definitely the best thing to wish for if you don't already have a pair.

on platinum: farming quests are too slow for platinum grinding. Item fetching/escorts/monster hunting are all better at platinum generation, and moving between cities you'll never run out of them. farming quests are mostly there to grind stats and gardening, and the one or two plats difference between success and failure isn't worth much.

Why is the PC in a room full of lightning hounds? Doors don't block your line of sight. Open the door from the side, which makes you least likely to get targeted by spells and breath weapons. Step away. Look inside. Are there 50 lightning hounds in the room? Well, you probably don't want to step inside then, retreat, and ambush the ones that came after you somewhere the layout of the terrain is more in your favor. Or, since wall creation is plentiful, create it.

Getting hit by 20 breaths isn't something that just happens, it's something that happens when you're not paying attention or can't understand the basics of playing a roguelike.

>I will say, though, if you find yourself resorting to various novel strategies because the monsters are overwhelming otherwise, then it's a better bet to grind more and/or get better gear and come back later.

I for one find using strategy (and calling proper use of terrain strategy is already a stretch) to beat things more fun than grinding stats to elliminate any difficulty the game has to offer. If this is your first roguelike, I suggest playing something with less focus on grind and more on strategy (Nethack works), maybe the inability to grind your way out of challenges would be refreshing.

Even if you did play this game more like a roguelike, there are just some elements that deter it from the genre. Roguelikes are meant to make you learn from your mistakes and refine your strategies; Elona+ can either throw rods of wishing at you or a room full of cluster bomb rocks at times. there are several plausible explanations:

- maybe I wasn't paying attention
- maybe I was holding down the up button to open a locked door and went right in after it opened
- maybe I got there via teleport
etc.

the truth is I went into a low-level dungeon with a high-level PC just to get that screenshot. no PCs were harmed during its production. As my speed and Hide was very high, the hounds didn't even aggro.

Elona is a game where you play the same character for hundreds of hours, and there is no permadeath. You can't apply the same standards of attention as roguelikes with permadeath. far as roguelikes go,

I would also argue that the combat in elona is rather bland and uninteresting compared to, say, ADOM. it's mostly a life sim.

Can I store money somewhere so I don't lose it when I die? If so, where?

Don't forget Otogiri and Buster Book.

You can also get a very high enchantment from a living weapon.

Finally, if you reroll melee weapon artifacts, sometimes the ehchantment shows up.

>>12059090
It stacks up to +200%. For reference: Otogiri = +30%, Mag Abyss = +40%, Vital Flayer = +120%, Living Weapon = +10% per level.

Who's your favorite god and what's your class?

>> No.12059911

Kumiromi, Thief class.

Works wonders when combined with Shadow Step, Magic Kiss, Shining Wave and spells.

Jure, Farmer (although I used a business card to change the feat to a gunner).

Kinda feel bad for her, seems she's like that since her festival is filled with beating heretics, prostitution, giving body pillows of her, and selling souvenir.

So far my favorite god is Jure even though she's not all that useful once you can cast your own healing spells reliably. I'm an archer.

So if ammo gets ruined by acid there's no way to fix it?

You can use the pot for fusion to restore it. It's the recipe using a acidproof liquid, a lemon, and the damaged item.

Is using the doujou worth it? I have a level 11 Exile that I can't be bothered to mine gems for.

>> No.12062852

>>12062387
If you're not willing to put effort for your pet, why bother using it at all?

If you use the doujou, the amount of money needed to train it to decent levels would rival or even exceed if you just gave it gems or let it pickpocket and train them on its own.

Worth it just for that I'd say. Crystal spear and 4-D pocket seem worthwhile too

Not that guy, but you can get those three spells from spellbooks.

Resurrection is pretty rare, and Mist of Dazzling is new, so it probably doesn't come in a spellbook either. I'd recommend saving the res for a boss fight where you really need your allies, since the relationship loss that you gain back from the res isn't that tough to get back as long as you actually use that ally.

The new mist spell disrupts casting occasionally for a caster that is standing in one of the squares. Seems to be kind of unreliable after doing a quick test. Could be useful if you were desperate, though.
