Why are Japanese cities ugly concrete jungles
sure they have good public transportation, but their architecture is god awful

they're as old as Europe with South American tier architecture for their cities
why is this?

>> No.12021149

ameripigs bombed them all.

>> No.12021156

>>12021149
This, actually. All the shit was bombed so they just rebuilt everything cheaply and easily. And less out of wood. The Japanese have never really into general architecture. Sure they do shrines and shit but it's still all wood.

>> No.12021165

>>12021149
but Europe restored their old architecture though

well, the old designs anyway lol

does Japan not give a fuck?

>> No.12021169

Also earthquakes and shit.

This doesn't explain their terrible web design though

>> No.12021172

If is wasn't for the concrete jungles Japan wouldn't have such a great urban culture. All that depression and technology may not have come if everywhere it was some sort of peckerwood fantasyland.

>>12021165
Because building a modern city out of wood simply isn't practical.

>> No.12021240

In Europe we have space to build cities. Japan have size compared to California with majority of it being mountains. It is so cramped, that is nearly imposible to design nice cities.

Cap'n Obvious flies away!

It is when you want half the city burning down. The thing that gets me about South American cities is they all smell like trash and sewage and are dirty. Japan is pretty clean.

>>12021136
Earthquakes perhaps? Traditional 1-2 storey earthquake-proof buildings are too unpractical nowadays.

As people have mentioned here:

- Japanese traditional architecture isn't dureable. The only lasting buildings they've ever built are castles. Other buildings are made of mainly wood, which makes then easy to burn down.

- The Ameicans bombed a lot. Combine it with the fact that most of their buildings are made of wood and you'd have a gigantic fire.

- Earthquakes are very frequent which made traditional japanese architecture become very focused on easy to build buildings since they would be destroyed in the next one.

In the end, since they want durable buildings BUT doesn't have a masonry tradition there due to the earthquakes and lack of quarries they simply make their buildings as utilitarian as possible.

But wood is pretty.
Actually I don't understand this thread one bit. I don't think Japanese cities are ugly.

Me either, but that's just from seeing pictures.

My brother went there and said it looked like mexico (without the dirtiness), so I guess the pictures we see on the internet just don't capture that.

Or maybe it's just a difference in the way we see things, maybe what looks comfortable and organized to one person looks ugly and cluttered to another?

/int/ is that way

Tells them to go away when they're insulting piss ugly japan, but when its shitty nip streets then they're fine

>> No.12021704

America threw matches at Japan in WWII. Since the Japanese made all of their houses out of tissue paper and balsa wood, everything burned down. Now they switched to concrete.

Don't worry, I also report those shitty street threads.

The Americlaps, the Germans, and the Britbongs bombed most of Europe and they have very nice looking cities today.

Japan has no excuse for their ugly architecture that is grey and boring.

Those three either have more land for resources or traded with a lot of other countries. Nobody wanted to be Japan's friend.
