I'm new to playing dating sims and VNs and am slightly confused about a couple things. It seems a lot of them have "canon" endings or "true" endings which is whats considered to be the actual end to the VN. However if the VN does not have a sequel or is based around choosing the girl/options I like best why is that choosing X-san over Y-chan is considered canon or true? Why is this ending the right ending or more important over the other ones?

i don't know.

>> No.12006481

In that case, the only significance is that you unlock it later.

More often, there will be a normal and true ending for a given heroine, where the true end works out better.

Ah okay, that makes sense then.

Because sometimes in the main heroine route is when the story of the game or the MC unfolds.

easier to get an anime adaptation with a true ending

I prefered Akiha's bittersweet ending over the shitfest that is Arcueid's and what happened afterwards. It just makes no sense.

The two Akiha endings were bittersweet, Nasu has something against the sister archetype.
Azaka and Kokuto? Akiha and Shiki ending? Illya's route or survival? lol no.

Sometimes I prefer the "true end" being the melancholic ending. Seems more realistic if the "normal" end is the happy ending and then you unlock the truth, which isn't usually happy.

Of course most people after playing a long VN would probably want a super happy "true" ending as a reward for putting their energy into the characters.

I generally like to define it as "The true route is whichever advances and answers the questions of the main conflict(s), if any, in the best manner possible."

For Tsukihime, that logic works because there's split routes for 1 heroine and Tsukihime is kind of unique in that aspect (Not to mention that the canon end for the "sequel" in Melty Blood is an unpublished end). But when you get to generalizing true/canon routes, you may end up with:
- Most, if not all heroines have a normal and "true" route, like the aforementioned Tsukihime.
- There is only one heroine that is more relevant to the common plot than the others and has an extra, overarching end that answers stuff that might have been ambiguous in other routes. Daitoshokan is a mix of this and the above.
- There is only one real end with one heroine and the others are more like sideroutes, Looseboy likes working with this kind in his AkabeiSoft2 works and you also see it in Sengoku Rance "IFs", for example. Unlockables would fall under this I guess.

All in all, I think its a bit hard to just define it but the novel itself sometimes will tell you it's the true route

There are often factors that suggest one girl is the main heroine (cover art, screentime given, role in story, etc.), though it's not cut and dry so it's sometimes a matter of debate and you can never completely "prove" that a girl is the canon choice.

If you're going to get into eroge you pretty much need to disabuse yourself of the idea of "canon." My personal approach is just to assume all routes happened, in different universes or whatever.

In some cases, the true ending is also chosed unoficially by fans, based on who is the foremost heroine on the cover of the game or who is the most used in ad campaigns.
