I like the language itself, I started watching anime and consuming otaku media to help me learn Japanese rather than the other way around like most people here seemingly did.

They've got some good work values and mentality hardwired into them. It's kind of scary at times like overworking yourself to death but I think it's something admirable to take from.

Good food, an excellent postal service and a view of sexuality that actually makes sense. The ability to get easy access to lolicon material and no laws banning the possession of child pornography is great too. I'd add customer service but this past year I've seen it nosedive numerous times.

All that being said, after 3 years I'm getting sick of this place. Gonna move back to my home country in the summer and continue freelancing. Japanese people are kind of disgusting to be around.

There are some attitudes in the culture I like. The Japanese value quiet efficiency over brazen assertiveness which I prefer. There seems to be many more social and commercial mechanisms in place for the introverted, I could just pay a girl to cuddle with me and then pick up one of thousands of relationship simulators on my way home to a modestly sized apartment. It's what you would expect from the country that created the word "hikikomori".

I'm sure it's a large and diverse country, not some otaku fantasy land, but when I hear about how some young people wear surgical masks so they don't have to interact with others as much, I can't help but be a little envious.

The food culture is pretty cool, as is the history. Albeit that history is much like western in that only a hundred year period half a millenia ago was interesting.

Comedy, most mainstream music, social attitudes, the whole living parameters? I can't even think of a word for that besides it being shitty to live there.

I like their music, there's so much talent, creativity and opportunity there.

But I dislike pretty much everything else. The history is boring, the language, while fun, is a clusterfuck; the people, while friendly, are mostly sheep; the government is a bunch of greedy and corrupt faggots (both left-wing and right-wing), the typical salaryman life is shit (stress), cities are overpopulated, social interactions are shit (bullying, suicide), etc.

And I actually hate their media, I think otaku culture is one of the worst expressions of capitalism and mind control ever, but I consume it even though I'm aware of it, which makes me feel pretty bad.

The mountain areas, the very green fields, forests, rivers, beaches, ect. I like it all. It's very different and seems so much nicer than the desert that I'm exposed to all the time.

Their culture and history makes their people seem just as depressed, introverted, and insecure as I am. Even better, there isn't any pressure to "fit in" because as a foreigner I never would anyway.

I suspect this is why many people here like me are drawn to japanese entertainment, which is constantly output to be consumed at a fast clip and has lots of geeky themes.

If you want to know, the fat girls tend to wear pants or shorts. There is some crossover such as some fat/ugly girls wearing dresses/skirts and skinny/cute girls wearing shorts/pants, but it's mostly as previously stated with the cute girls wearing dresses and the ugly ones wearing pants. Also most of the pants tend to not be denim, but rather a fabric similar to what t-shirts are made out of. Japan has an incredible variety of underground movements, anything your heart desires you can find. The history of Catholicism in Japan is really cool. There are still about 1 million Catholics in Japan, and a few monasteries.

There is a Benedictine monastery run by a Minnesotan in the Japanese Alps about 2 hours west of Tokyo. I often think about enjoying a retreat to there. They welcome all faiths, and also non-religious people who would like a taste of Catholic monastic life. They are working at building themselves into a bigger retreat and renewal centre, so it'd be great to support them if I ever got the chance.
