There's a huge difference because of motion tracking. Add accurate body tracking to the mix and have something (a set of peripherals for example) that represents whatever you're trying to simulate in the real world and bam you've got pretty much realistic simulation, now it's all down to the software.... This is what I'm most excited about in VR.

I don't agree that this is a good thing. OR wasn't exactly strapped for cash. $2 Billion is an absurd amount of money, but it's far beyond the point of diminishing marginal returns. Additionally, with that kind of money to throw around, there is no longer as much of an incentive for OR to produce a quality product, because customers might not be a significant source of revenue. Sure, everybody at OR becomes a millionaire, but from my perspective as a customer, things just got worse.

Furthermore, what's more important than funding is being a first mover. If this is the stab at VR that takes off, the formats developed, the standards written, etc. are going to have huge impact later on. That's the danger of FB acquiring.

To put it another way, if EA had purchased AliceSoft, they could throw all the money they wanted at Zun and never produce a quality product.

As of now, OR is a peripheral. They have an SDK which does not require that you "check in" your software. Hell, you don't need the SDK at all, it just makes development easier.

If it stops being one you can start screaming about the sky falling (and even then, even if nobody steps in). Oracle didn't require you to check in all Java programs when they acquired Sun and it's not clear that Facebook will do things differently.

It's not just a question of whether or not Facebook will allow devs to develop freely on the platform, but how many devs will actually want to, considering how bitter everyone feels about OR now combined with the general uncertainty regarding the future.

I was actually in the middle of developing an OR game prototype, but now I've put the project on hold because I just can't be sure where VR is heading anymore and whether I'll be able to sell it without taking facebook's cock in my ass, and I know a lot of devs are in a similar place.

Just the fact that many devs are scrapping or freezing their projects as we speak is already causing enormous damage to the industry.

I don't know what to think... yes, they definitely have more resources now and will deliver a better product, but I really hope they don't somehow sharply limit its current uses. It seems a bit unlikely, at least in the short run, and so far they've not made drastic changes to their other acquisitions (though they can't really be compared to OR, which is a different product and is still in development). But, on the other hand... it's a company I don't like or trust at all and I don't want it get close to the kind of virtual reality I want.

I had so much hope in this... I want to think we'll get something that won't deviate much from what we expected originally.
