For beginners
Everything you need to know about tenhou itself can be found here http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

Explanations for the tiles, rules, scoring etc can be found here:
http://www.ofb.net/~whuang/ugcs/gp/mahjong/mahjong.html
http://www.japanesemahjong.com/reachmahjong/intro.htm

Useful notes (glossary, hands, scoring):

Games to test your Knowledge:
http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/yaku.html
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/
http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/bamboo/bamboo.html

Hand Calculator: http://no-info.no-ip.info:6224/mj/mahjong.html

Try the singleplayer games first.

Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so don't expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

If you read some of the linked sites and still have questions feel free to ask.

Dear bros who own their own Japanese-style tiles,
where did you get your tiles set, what tiles do you have (maker, name), and how satisfied are you with it?
I'm a eurofag who wants to buy his own tiles but doesn't want that crappy Chinese haku with a rectangle on it.

>> No.11989429

>>11988615
I have two Japanese-style sets.

First one I bought from Witzigs in the UK (Kent & Cleal nowadays apparently). Quality was low but acceptable and it was really cheap. Main complaint is the tiles are only 14mm thick; not as bad as a Chinese travel set or thin-ass American tiles but still subpar.

Second one I brought from a fellow who still seems to be selling mahjong set/mat bundles at booklooker dot de. Automated English translation of the site is pretty spotty, so knowing a bit of German might help ordering from there, but go to the Spiele section and search for riichi. Not the greatest quality set again but acceptable and the tiles are properly sized; it's a pretty standard Japanese mahjong set.

I know it's otherwise pretty easy to find a certain set in various European online shops that has properly sized tiles, but it's pretty expensive, has terribly ugly faces and impractical white backs.

Then you could always buy from Japan. If you search for japanese-games-shop you'll find a site with a fellow who sells mahjong sets among other things at pretty exorbitant prices, but is allegedly fairly reliable. Buying through Rakuten would give you lots of options at more reasonable pricing, although with a bit more hassle.

If you have 4 pairs, which one is better, going for toitoi or chiitoi?

>> No.12025818

You're best off not aiming for toi toi intentionally, since it has poor waits and progression. If you have dora and yakuhai, or dora and tan'yao, you can try for dora 2-3 and yakuhai/tan'yao without specifically aiming for toi toi.

Otherwise, you can just go for chiitoi. With 4 pairs, you're already 2shanten

>> No.12025827

How about 5 pairs? It's 1shanten from chiitoi, but pon call is easy to make.

Personally I don't quite like chiitoi, I get discard backfire too often if I'm aiming that yaku.

>> No.12025847

>>12025827
5 pairs leaves you 1shanten from chiitoi, but if your tiles aren't connected, e.g. you don't have an iipeikou-esque shape in your hand, you're back to 2-shanten once you call the pon. It's a poor way to progress your hand. Of course, you can get backfires with chiitoi, but that can happen no matter what your hand is. Since chiitoi simply requires you to form pairs, and not sequences, it's easier to hold danger tiles, play safe tiles, and change your wait while you're going for it. It's a rather versatile yaku and you shouldn't underestimate it.

If you were really insistent on getting daisangen instead of taking the tsumo then and there, cutting 9p would give you the widest iishanten. Drawing 47p or 58p would put you back into tenpai.

Also no riichi was declared. No one else is even tenpai at that point. Besides, there's no need to play it safe when you have a yakuman, since the reward far outweighs the risk.

Really, the only question here is whether you should pass up a 100% guaranteed baiman for an uncertain yakuman. In this case, given that it's the ippan lobby and he has ankou of both haku and chun, I would expect that hatsu to come out rather easily.

Ok, /jp/sies, I have a mahjong exercise for all of you folks who happen to have a jonesin' love for this irrational and lovely game.

The table is like this:

2 man.

That tile is absolutely useless after your 5 man draw.
Also I can see a 5 man discarded after riichi so 2-5 man wait is impossible. To deal in your opponent should either have 1-3 man (highly unlikely that he would declare riichi with this form) or 2-2 man (i.e. he threw away perfect 1-4 wait).

>> No.12042492

>>12042265

5 Sou.

The riichi opponent discarded it by the way, but also, your left opponent too and the right one is mostly looking for low pin tiles.

So with that tile you will be playing mostly defensive again any opponent.

Points standings? Kuitan allowed? I'm inclined to go with 5m, followed by 45p if another tile pairs up, or 1s if 3m shows up. If I'm behind, then probably 2m.

Anon is east and has a good hand. There is no time to worry about a wind pon at that point.

The hand wasn't opened up for itsuu for that matter, but rather for honitsu.

>> No.12047657

>>12047500
yeah, I didn't say that he played badly, just that I would play differently.

I'm way more defensive in general; I would never deal a live tong after someone's called the other three

I would cut the 6pins before doing that--especially if I was going for hon'itsu, even if keeping tong castrated my hand

then again, I tend not to come in first

>> No.12047693

>>12047657
>yeah, I didn't say that he played badly, just that I would play differently.
That's the thing. You said you were a noob, so I feel compelled to inform you that your inclination to playing defensive from that is off.

I should note that I also would not have discarded the ton when Anon did it, although I do not have strong objections to Anon's doing so.

>> No.12048855

>>12046983
He was aiming for honitsu as early as the 5s discard. Then he pushed ton against something that was guaranteed to be big when his hand was only tenpai for only 5800 with haku atozuke. And then he calls chi on 7m to force honitsu, which takes him back to iishanten. These are all bad choices.

On top of that, the player vacillates a lot. If he wanted honitsu, why discard pei? If he wanted to accept the haku atozuke tenpai, why hold onto ton that long instead of cutting it earlier when it's more likely to be safe? If you go back and forth between your options, it'll only backfire on you.

Also I see toimen keeping that nakabukure 3s for some reason. The 47m nobetan had the same number of apparent tiles available, but waiting on several different tiles is generally better. But no, he discards 4m (not even 7m) against the dealer's obvious honitsu with at least two dora. In any case, the 4p tanki beats both nobetan and nakabukure, and his choice rightfully backfired.

Tokujou players may make fewer mistakes than joukyuu players, but it's still a large number. You can get very far just by making less mistakes in your basic play.

Anon didn't suggest to break up the tenpai by questioning the decision to riichi. Although that can very well be the proper course of action depending on situation.

>Two others called riichi prior. So, why the fuck not?
Because there's a fourth player. Riichi makes that player less likely to deal into you. Four riichi also ends the round in a draw, which you also want to avoid if you're dead set on getting that chuuren.
