Today it's been announced that イオシスjkガールズ (IOSYS jk GIRLS, from the D-Frag! OP) formed a new unit. They made a page:

http://www.iosysos.com/jkgirls/

Members are:

According to the website, it's a denpa unit and it's a place for IOSYS composers to do whatever the fuck they want. Here I'm hoping they go seriously overboard.

They're debutting with a PV for スーパーすごたんクエスト:
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/1394104238

Their previous works are
- D-Frag! OP "Stalemate!" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztnKV9mtRRI
- jk Paradise (aparently from GITADORA, haven't listened to it yet)
- Konayuki cover - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbIL_ePabwM

I remember someone saying that ARM and 山本椛 should make a circle some time ago. My son, it seems your prayers got answered.

Is denpa sort of akin to punk in that the actual music is secondary to the culture it is a reflection of, and music is just one way that this culture can be expressed? I've heard it said both that "punk is a lifestyle, not a genre" and that "denpa is a lifestyle, not a genre." Maybe I'm totally off base here, but it was something I've been thinking about.

That is what I was asking to the people on the thread when I asked about ideology. Afaik, denpa is not only a reflection of Akihabara's otkus and the whole 2D love.

Or is it safe to asume it all comes down to that?

- Delusional anime and eroge world.
- complete negation of the 3D world.
- try to achievve happiness through only the 2D.

It depends on who you ask and what they care more about, so in that sense it is like punk. Yes.

Denpa is a state of mind, a feeling, a vibe, an atmosphere. You can't listen to moepop and say it's denpa just because it sounds like denpa.

If it looks like a denpa and quacks like a denpa, it's not always a denpa. In fact, more likely nowadays it's just moe pop. Denpa is not even limited to anime and akihabara, it stretches beyond that.

I never liked ちぃむdmp☆ or odenpa because they sound like watered down moe pop more than denpa. There's no crazyness vibe.

it's like ozzy osbourne at 60 years old all dressed up singing you paranoid hiding behind his glasses compared to young ozzy osbourne biting the head off a bat and howling while he sings.

one is just a shell of the other, an approximation of a time gone by.

real denpa is in space, it's reaching out into the galaxy. the signal is lost, only vague memories of the signal can be recalled.

the call has not been returned. it will come back when it needs to.

I'll admit >>11978524 sounds like a blowhard to me too, but I really don't see the point in trying to disprove his hot air. Having someone drone on about what is and isn't denpa only reinforces the punk comparisons, because most people talking about punk did it all out of their ass.

I'll share a short story of my punk friend Mike. One time we were looking through CDs, I saw a They Might Be Giants CD and said I thought I'd buy it. He remarked "Oh so you're into that Emo stuff, huh?".

It is kind of funny to have someone trying to explain how it's not a genre but an ineffable feeling and then immediately tries to quantify and come up with examples of what it includes.

>Denpa is a state of mind, a feeling, a vibe, an atmosphere.

I kinda see what you mean. When I was in high school my dad gave me an old shortwave radio. If anything that was the original denpa, I would spend hours listening to weird shit in the middle of the night like numbers stations and EAM and crazy interval signal music (which could be considered denpa as it is repetitive and memetic by design). The vibes I get from listening to the harder-core type denpa are similar to what I got then, just this general feeling that what you're listening to is ephemeral and "out there" in a creepy and unsettling way.

Denpa is a reflection of the postmodern condition with an otaku flavor. It expresses a dissolution of "larger" meaning by recycling signs that communicate smaller meanings in and of themselves. These smaller meanings then begin to stand for reality itself since we construct larger narratives with them. Akiba has become a simulacrum of its own fictions. I think denpa, and otaku culture in general, celebrates this fact by mashing things together and pulling them apart.

Consider how "denpa-kei" moe by conventional standards wouldn't be considered moe at all (more like parody), but in this day and age, we can still be moved despite its blatant artificiality.

About being denpa, as long as it has a delusional and artificial feeling I think it can be considered denpa. I'll concede that Shaking Pink is more j-pop (isn't that called moe denpa?).

That's not only a RtL thing, most Touhou albums are generic arranges, they're there only because they contain one or more denpa songs in them.

This is a common misconception, people who start listening to ちぃむdmp and whatnot end up expecting there are albums with nothing but denpa songs, and artists who make nothing but denpa songs, when this is false. Denpa songs are isolated and relatively rare, artists who make normal songs come up with denpa songs in-between their normal songs, some more than others. Same for albums, there are rarely albums with 100% denpa songs in them. That's why they're called denpa "songs" and not "albums" nor "artists"; songs are isolated and rare (although decreasingly) and that's why it's fun to search for them. The denpa bot for example posts songs, not albums.

Akiba had 3 main 'golden eras'

- late 80s (87-89), mostly a home computer and electronics district. Very little anime, consumer electronics at all time high. some people say the whole 80s was a golden era for akihabara because of Japan's booming economy particularly with regards to technology

-early/mid 90s. Video game explosion, this is what brought the anime to akihabara. major home console and game releases. Culture merge thanks to the PC-9821

-late 90s/early 2000s. explosion of moe and eroge, denpa culture emergence at peak

I watch this every few months. Kaeru is cute as hell and the more I watch it the more I want to fuck her while she makes an annoyed face.

How can a simple drawing be so attractive?
