Otaku seem to have an interest in the cultures of introverted countries, main point being Japan. But I'd include Russia in there too. And Finland, but they don't have much international media. As opposed to extroverted cultures, like America or such.

History is very important to learn. It saddens me that most people don't have an interest in it and that history is doomed to repeat itself because of it. But everyone who has an interest in history seems to feel the same way.
History is good for writing and the arts too. ZUN seems to be well-versed in Japanese history and folklore.

By the way, I've played that game before I knew about Homestuck and I honestly didn't know what the fuck was going on, but I say the interaction and characterization in that game are surprisingly decent for something made by those kind of people. I'd expect that all characters act like 14-years old facebookers, but from what I've seen only Kyouko and Ichirin who are depicted as obnoxious. They're somewhat interesting, though not necessarily likeable, perhaps. It's like watching some American TV show.
