Why do Touhou fans rage about Touhou itself, when they know they can't do anything to change it? I mean. ZUN doesn't care about westerners, and he doesn't visit this board, so why do people complain when it's very clear their criticisms, legitimate or not, will fall on deaf ears? Pic unrelated.

Because they're newfriends. The most vocal and annoying Western Touhou fans aren't even big fans of this genre of video game. Just take a look at /touhou/, shrinemaiden.org, or a small amount of the Anons in /jp/. You know who you are.

Even worse, there's the Western fans that stick around only for the (mostly mediocre) fanworks.

Primary Touhou fan: One who became interested in Touhou due to it's games. A longtime fan of shmup/arcade/retro-esque games, this person likes Touhou for it's actual gameplay, music and/or art/style. Probably has an interest in secondary works, but most likely enjoys the main games and ZUN's works more so.

Secondary Touhou fan: One who became interested in Touhou due to some offshoot (dojin works, IOSYS, fanart, 4chan...). May or may not have an interest in its main genre and more likely have not really played the games; if they did play, it's only to see what the game is like and doesn't get into it (i.e. 1CCing normal or completing extra). However, probably enjoys the side games (IaMP and SWR) and may or may not enjoy the fanworks. This is also the typical "Touhoufag."

I played Galaga in the arcades, when arcades were awesome and enjoyable for assholes only. That's how awesome and in love with Touhou-like games I am.

I love the games but I suck at them. I suck at games in general, so its of little concern. My favorite game as a kid was Galaga followed by Asteroids if that tells you how old I am. And yeah I sucked at those too.

I, for one, enjoy all kinds of games. Been playing videogames since as long as I can remember. You don't have to be a hardcore STG fan to appreciate the touhou series.

Of course. I'm merely addressing the Western fans that always complain.

ZUN makes these games for fans of video games in general; that's why he throws in such a wide range of difficulty levels. He doesn't have to do this, since the average Japanese game otaku can beat these games while blindfolded on lunatic mode, but he does it anyway in order to reach a broader audience.

I would think that ZUN would want newfriends to check out other stuff, though. Many shoot-em-ups make Touhou look like crap. There's also an ocean of Japanese fanworks dedicated to all video games out there, and not just Touhou. For example, there's doujin music for every Jappo video game imaginable. Long ago, I cried tears of joy when I heard my first Castlevania doujin music remix album.
