There's no option to play with just regular fever/lucky attack mode, it's Big Bang mode or nothing.

Puyo Puyo vs Tetris matches don't really go well. Any modes where the two players aren't always in Tetris/Puyo Puyo mode at the same time are no fun.

The ai has been substantially dumbed down and there's no difficulty settings. The hardcore ai cheat doesn't work in this game either. Even characters like Rulue and Schezo play slowly both in Tetris and Puyo Puyo modes.

The animations were pretty lazily done, everyone only has 3 attack animations, one counter animation, and one hurt animation.

Some of the art looks really off-model and weird.

Not many music choices. But you can buy 10 different songs as dlc for 100 yen each.

You have to buy extra story chapters as dlc. I forget how much they are. I think it's 300 yen each.

I've only played a little bit of Puyo over the years, but the art style is adorable enough to make me want to play it more. When I saw Puyo Puyo Tetris on the Japanese PSN I was excited for a western release. If it's bad, what's the quintessential Puyo Puyo game? I'd like to play it in depth first.

I started with the DS version of Puyo Pop Fever. I'd say it's a nice starting point. Amitie's course is easy enough for a beginner to do while still being a bit challenging but Raffine's is super hard and is kind of like a rite of passage. Once you can beat her story mode you're definitely on your way to getting good. There's also 15th anniversary and 7. The other fever-era games have no english translations.

If you want to play one of the older and simpler games first, go with Puyo Puyo Tsu (2) for the genesis or Snes.

Actually, I'll just go ahead and elaborate on the changes.
The gamecube version is 2 players only, while the DS version is up to 8 players.
One of the final characters in Raffine's story gets her own theme song, but only in the DS version. In the gamecube version she gets the normal battle music.
There's cute character portraits on the bottom screen that change expressions.
The cutscene transitions are a lot smoother.
In the credits sequence for Raffine there's a spot the difference puzzle game. On the gamecube version it's just a black screen with white scrolling text.
So yeah, I'd get the DS version.

The PS2, GCN and Xbox versions share a few differences from the other versions (including the DS one):

-3D puyo instead of sprites, and an option to have the camera move around during chains.
-The cheat codes for unlocking everything, freely choosing a character in endless mode, etc., are gone.
