to figure out gods plan, pursue any plan. only through engagement with being does being disclose itself. and pursuing even simple, parochial ideals righteously, doing what is best to succeed at these goals and not fail, can (and does) still advance more transcendent ideals, even when youre not conscious of them.

really, its that simple, pick something you want to do, and get cracking, values are implicit teleologies after all (the examination of which being highly informative for self-consciously determining ones own values [does one really advocate the effects of what one says they advocate?], but thats another discussion). you may not really know what effect you'll have at the end, but you can be atleast certain you advanced history in even a small way.

i say this since thats the sort of question where if you have to ask, you probably dont/wont get it. since you're here on /jp/, i personally recommend cultivating your virtues: get good at a form of competition (this is a big one), familiarize with a field of study, cultivate physical excellence, learn and art or trade, et cetera et cetera. the very process of personal development helps disclose truths of being, wherein one succeeds instead of failing to develop, and helps break the solipsistic death-spiral of narcicissm, into greater responsibility and transcendence, which then allows pursual of even greater projects and ideals (like say, a form of employment to support yourself).

What do you have to say to people such as myself, whose personal ambitions are stymied by external obligations?

In my case, I have two aging parents and a severely disabled brother. I anticipate all three will need my personal and fiscal assistance in the near future. Thanks to my government's obsession with austerity, I doubt that I will be able to rely on state assistance to provide them with necessary care. And I have serious doubts that lower taxes and fewer regulations will allow charities to rush in to fill the gap.

ah, is it really a question? if you hold them in regard, then there is no doubt about doing what it takes, that becomes the project, the effort will be your ascesis. after all, the perfection of works of love is not in the object, but in the love.

unless you think them unworthy, in which case we consign them to the frozen promontories of indifference, better serving through oblivion than existence.

but maby thats not what you had in mind? something deep or more instrumental perhaps? after all, here youve asked and not done. perhaps if the choice was made, it would be unable to handle it, very well then.

to begin, a *categorical* sense of 'external obligations' does not obtain, beings are not wholly segregated from being (or wholly united in of themselves). we are always and already operating under finitude, truths of being that we must account for and deal with. the atomistic dasein too would have 'obligations' that impinges on his possibility to do whatever. indeed, it is this very finitude that facilitates meaning. a poor being is that which desires untrammeled and unrestricted action. the act is not merely pointless, but unintelligable without context. can doing 'anything' even be truly imagined? even acts of mysticism, deus ex, or other ass-pulls, are still reliant on a pre-existing certain state of affairs that is acted upon. the process of overcoming is itself meaningful and validating.

topically, my advice would be that there is more to what the elderly can do in society than you may realise. consider looking into odd-jobs in areas such as education, or house-sitting, and the like. i also recommend getting in touch with extended family, not for strict charity, but cohabitation. shared living space and pooled resources reduces over-head for all (especially when all are contributing in some way). one of the best things grandparents can do is help raise the youngest generation, relieving the parental burden, allowing greater work opportunities.

such was the setup for most of human history untill more modern times. it was done because it worked after all, and since you mentioned austerity and economic troubles, im sure you can come to an arrangement without resorting to mere pity tripping.

as for yourself, i should say that one of the biggest pitfalls of young job seekers is the sentiment that a certain job is not 'good enough' or 'unappealing' in some way, the sentiment that it is unrelated to to your 'true' ideal/project. banishing this conceit will open many opportunities for you, all contingencies have an ultimate correspondence after all. and simply getting into the ground floor of a place can promise advancement if you show assertiveness and virtue. youed be surprised what the demand for conscientious and motivated young men is if you know where to look, the various field of youth work pop up again (things like sports programs or tutoring, there is also almost always great demand for math teachers too [consider utilizing free online education resources]).

You can't. However I don't think those powers are hers. I think they are given to her because she holds the position of Yama. If she were to lose that position then she would probably lose the powers too.

She may be the highest judge but there has to be someone above that appoints that judge. It's probably that person that gives her the power and that person who can take them away if she becomes corrupt for some reason.

Still, even without her ability to send dead assholes to hell she probably has a decent amount of her own power.

>Stop thinking start acting

sasuga anon, you messed up before you even got going. the point was that useful thinking is necessarily bound up in action, the cultivation of instrumental rationality is concerned with the achievement of instrumental goals. technically, thinking itself is an action, but getting something meaningful and useful out of thinking about thinking is not something that comes easily to most.

and sure, one can 'say' these things that way, but what does it really mean to the other person? at certain point youre basically saying 'to solve your problem git gud at life'. great, but how do? if it was already in him, he wouldent need to ask. This was largely my purpose for raising my question in the first place. I would indeed like to be able to retrieve an accurately-tuned solution to a problem when I am immediately presented with it, however in my experience this is largely impossible for the kinds of deeply-rooted personal issues that affect, and are effected by, the wide number of external factors that can only be ignored or written off at considerable cost. Instead, these answers take weeks, months, even years to germinate as previously hidden information reveals itself, as I exhaust possible courses of action and unearth new opportunities, and as the dynamics within my own universe change.

And even then, I normally obtain only vague notions. Applying them as fully fleshed-out solutions can be counterproductive or dangerous. After all, they are mere hypothesis that have yet to be bathed in the brine of my own reality and then assessed to determine whether or not they can be implemented.

Attempting to assess these notions on my own, however, can be just as dangerous. I am a human being. I have flaws, biases, and blind spots that can inhibit my own thinking. These defects will always impact my own ability to arrive at a beneficial conclusion, as they often provoke me into writing off evidence that contradicts my self-imposed standards. Dialogues such as this are helpful in allowing one to accept, however reluctantly, a reality that one already "knows" of. External analysis (especially on sites such as 4chan, where anonymity provides me with the licence to speak more freely than would be productive or considered appropriate in face-to-face conversations with people I can trust) provides differing points of view: new lenses through which I can view old problems from different angles and/or under different lights.

Through this process, important connections are unobscured and taken into account. The end result is a solution that is better-tuned for my particular situation.

In my own personal case, I was largely aware of the fact that my duty (however self-imposed) to my family, to whom I owe a great deal of gratitude would force me to choose between pursuing my dream career full-time and cutting short my ambitions in order to provide my family with a comfortable living and the sense of security in knowing that someone is looking out for them. This is something that I have refused to accept, deep down, and it takes discourses such as this to view the matter from a more rational standpoint: yes, I can't leave home and carve out a permanent life for myself in a high-octane metropolis. There are opportunities at home, however, and my education didn't exactly provide me with zilch. I have enough local contacts to nab part-time work or cultivate the beginnings of a small business. I have enough know-how to provide decent services.

And things within my family may change, of course; hope may be irrational, but it can still serve as a psychological safety net. No real point in writing off the next twenty years if I don't know what will happen in those twenty years. All I can do is plan for them and hope for the best.

Slowpoking hard here, but not likely. I looked it up myself a few months back as a way to put some goal in front of my futile existence, and merely reading the application website made it abundantly clear that it's not a job you pick because you have nothing better to do, because they need people with skills and an existing financial support structure. You cannot earn a living helping others(sorry if that sounded edgy)

Things like the Peace Corp aren't looking for random dudes who have nothing but a heart full of good will, they're looking for people with good social skills(you'll need them to integrate with a foreign culture) AND job-valuable skills like engineering or English Teaching. I wonder if she and those down in Higan really care about hermits who extend their life. I mean sure, in WaHH they sent a shinigami after Seiga, but I'm not entirely convinced. If they really wanted to kill her I think they could. Send several shinigami after her or attack more directly and more often. It makes me wonder if that's more of routine check-up to make sure the hermit hasn't lost her touch or started slacking off recently.

Even with beings such as Yama, they too have standards of right and wrong which can be just as easily manipulated for justification for their judgments.

One should only act right to preserve society and improve the lives of others, but not solely for a reward but to create a paradigm for others to follow in an upward spiral, such things as a reward are meaningless if acting "Good" according to the standards of a "Supreme being" rather than acting to assure your fellow man has a future.

If TL;DR

Don't be a dick and help people to get others to do the same for other people. Ensure a cycle of positive actions rather than negative ones.

However many in our society do not think that way, which is very disconcerting for those who actually want to help others.

While Shiki would probably mourn greatly over sending her loved one to Hell and would do anything in her power to stop it, in the end she would still do it as such is law.
But in Buddhism or whatever she is, would the willingness to do so be enough and would Komachi stop her from enacting the judgement, or would she still have to carry out the sentence to the fullest?

Why would Komachi stop her? She's just one of many subordinates and probably a low ranked one at that seeing as she's just the ferry person. Maybe she's just really nice and wants to stop her boss from doing something she will regret. Even then I don't think Yama can unfairly change someone's fate just because they were married. There is probably a whole council of other Yama and their superiors that will take away her powers or something is she misuses them. However, by the time she realized that being Yama was not the easy and rewarding job she thought it would be it was too late. She recognized that she should be disappointed but could not find the emotions needed to feel disappointed. All she could feel now was cold logic and nothing else.

She sees Komachi slacking off and is reminded of the person that she used to be a long time ago. She wonders if Komachi will ever get her serious and try to move up on the Shinigami ladder to be like her one day. For just a split moment Eiki hopes that she will not.

She spends her free time trying to improve peoples afterlives, so there's room for compassion and sympathy. Not that she'll let it cloud her judgement in a trial.

Read a doujin recently about Shiki Eiki becoming Yama basically through a coup with the help of Yukari and the oni because her previous boss was way too into the punishment part of the afterlife to the point that it lost its purpose of trying to actually help people. I rather liked the idea.

Maybe that's the reason Former Hell was too overpopulated.
Makes sense.

Well, part of the deal with Yukari was that Shiki Eiki had to be a better boss, to try and make it a paradise for everyone, and that she had to let the oni from the surface live in the underground as well.

So are most of you just ignorant, or are you deliberately disregarding established canon for the sake of masturbatory fantasy?

PMiSS:
"One of the many Yamas. As she is in charge of judging the dead of Gensokyo, she is the Yama with the closest ties to us. Since she is extremely preachy and is never mistaken about anything, she appears a little hard to approach. However, her teachings are basically for the benefit of the people of Gensokyo, so she wants us to listen to her obediently. This Yama is famous in Gensokyo, and particularly long-lived youkai have been helped by her at least once.
Nevertheless, youkai feel uncomfortable around Yamas, so whenever a Yama comes to Gensokyo, all youkai go into hiding. In this sense, Yamas are allies of honest people. Moreover, whenever a living person's karma is so bad that it becomes certain that he will go to Hell, she will go directly to warn that person during her work break, and may even urge the person to better themself."

>She may be the highest judge but there has to be someone above that appoints that judge
"Above" isn't entirely the right term as all Yama have equal judging power, but yes there is the top brass of the Ten Kings. When the jizou were enlisted to become new Yama, the Ten Kings would have made that possible.

>they too have standards of right and wrong which can be just as easily manipulated for justification for their judgments
They will know all of your reasons why you ever did anything. Your rationale is probably pretty important for what is considered moral or not, but when including that, it's assumed that there are some absolute standards.
