Outsourcing isn't exactly THAT big of a problem and may companies are starting to realize that the cost of sending jobs to India is that the Indians will fuck things up and when they need to get something maintained, the guy that has to do so will have his job set for life, as Indians do not write good documentation, if they do so at all.

No, what people should be more worried about if they want to become programmers is that everyone else is thinking the same thing as them. Although my particular university's computer science department is not that large in comparison to other studies, in the grand scheme of things, it is a rather fast growing field. Take a look at the users of 4chan on any board and ask around for what they are studying, or what they have degrees in. Note the number of computer science majors, and the number of STEM majors as a whole. People generally believe if they want to be able to make money in an "easy middle class lifestyle", they're going to need to work in STEM. Are there actually that many STEM jobs? Not really. At least not enough to accomodate a population that thinks the field is going to be easy to get in to. The result is that for many jobs, you need not just a degree, but years of experience. Your competition may not be for high paying jobs, but for internships.

My best advice for anyone looking to go into the field is don't. Unless you've got your heart set on the field, and have been programming since you were a teenager or a kid, and feel as if this was the job you were meant for and nothing else... don't add yourself to the pile of competition.

Unfortunately, or fortunately from another point of view, we see very quickly who has the drive who hasn't. Simply because computer science is a mathematical field, difficult, hard, unforgiving, and the people who came into it to have a good and easy life will feel like shit. They will always be able to find (or steal) a job, yes, but they will be bad, no amount of whatever experience they have.

Computer science, as in you want to do something with your life and be paid like you are somebody worthwhile, is an elite job. If you have the mindset of an elite, you will be paid like an elite. If not, you will be outsourced to India.

I majored in computer science from a hard, very pure 5 years courses. The difference between somebody who knows what he does and somebody who don't is generally in the 2000$ price range. Because the person who knows is precious, rare, and will stay rare in the foreseen future.

The amount of people who major in a shitty school with 2-3 years courses and speciality Java (as in "we only see Java and doesn't start to explain what is a byte before third years") is astonishing, but they are near useless.

Yes, but even if you come out of a really really good school, or if you go into a masters, there still remains the fact that a degree is rarely enough. The math that's required to do computer science isn't hard. The coursework... it can be hard if you don't know what you're doing. What is hard is trying to explain to a prospective employer why you weren't working a software development job for 3 years or more before you came to his office for an interview.

And yes, I realize that there are a lot of schools that teach Java exclusively. The people that come out of those are probably going to be little better than the Indians that employers are realizing don't make good products. That doesn't mean that the rest of us whose schools were more language agnostic aren't going to be having problems finding jobs.
