Each game is the same thing, but by a different writer. You get a varying flavor of the same stuff.

NEXT happens years later, with different characters, however.

>> No.11765573

>>11765493
NEXT is more or less standalone, though it makes some references to the original, but they're more or less explained if they're at all relevant aside from some of the ones like the "sisters" who run a flower shop and Nagi's dislike for one of them and so on.

2gaki and 3gaki are almost literal rehashes of the first, except for adding a new character as a heroine.

Yep.
3 was decent enough aside from things like the substantial length character afterstories being locked until you complete every route and some other system issues that annoyed me.

>> No.11765587

>>11765581
I quite liked three, reshashed but at least funny and liked the character interactions. It wasn't as good as the original but nice.
I don't even know how I finished a couple of routes in 2, I blame Kani, can't resist her.

>> No.11765586

For the first three, play the original first.
If you like it and want more or really like Selebu's character design/VA, wait a few weeks then read 2gaki and so on.

You might manage begining but then around at the half point of story it starts to pull all the remaining plot threads from Zero and continue them. So start with Zero, you can manage skipping the Genrins if you absolutely dont want to even check the novelizations but Zero shouldn't be skipped under any circumstances becasue you don't even get quick explanations from stuff leftover from there like you get for Genrin stuff.

It's average tier in terms of reading difficulty (not counting the german words, which can be dealt with by searching for a german or using a translator) and it'll probably make as much success as the big EOP names like Muv-Luv Alternative, Fate Stay Night, etc. All that is needed is patience and effort, which may be quite a lot, but the success will most likely pay off, which isn't true for a variety of titles (including some that are being translated right now which people are working on more because they like it rather than caring for demand).

Finished クオリアフォーダンス / Qualiaffordance and my KISS verdict: it's rubbish; it's not even poor, below par nor average.

The VN is animated, so the ero scenes are animated but lower quality than what you see in the famous version 1 of School Days. The art is average and reasonably simple to assist in keeping consistency so there isn't a shock transition between pretty non-ero art/scene to ero scene. The biggest problem is its lacking dialogue, take it from VNDB's description -" Kazuki is your typical shy boy who couldn’t turn down a request nor doubt others. However, after one summer vacation incident, he became able to see the ‘colours’ of other people’s emotions... as he became closer to the heroines, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary." The "extraordinary" part lasts all of 10 minutes and no more, so much for that: its reveal was short and its resolution was even shorter; it's lacking any sort of buildup so the reveal and resolution simply gathers a "what, is this it?" - the whole thing is resolved in 20 lines after MC mentions "I will stay and do it with you" thereof. BGM is low in count. Oh, the school festival evebt deserves a mention - it's worse than muvluv's lacross arc as the latter at least serves a purpose and tells points, even if you find it boring. The whole thing feels incomplete and inexperienced, made me gain more respect for the likes of Inre (the amateur group who did chusingra 46+1)

Was about to make my own thread about this, but saw this thread on the front page and figured I'd give this a shot first:

I'd like to dive into another VN, it's been a long time, and the horror genre is sounding real good right now. I'm constantly hearing about Higurashi and Umineko so I figured I'd give that a shot. But up until now I thought they were different series.

Could someone explain to me where to start? Must I play Higurashi (http://vndb.org/v67)) before Umineko (http://vndb.org/v24)) - is that the one I need to start at? I've done a fair amount of searching around but also don't want to spoil anything.

Alternatively, is there a better horror VN I can sink my teeth into? Only other one I've played so far is Saya.

>>11777258
There were a few Higurashi references in Umineko, but you probably don't have to worry about spoilers, since as far as I remember, the only thing that could be considered a spoiler wouldn't make sense before reading Higurashi anyway. It's been quite a while since I played either one, though.

That said, I'd recommend playing Higurashi first anyway so that you understand the aforementioned references.

>> No.11777305

>>11777258
In my opinion Higurashi and Umineko are both great. With Higurashi being more focused on horror while Umineko is more of a straight up mystery novel.

So if horror is what you're looking for, I'd say you should go with Higurashi, although I personally enjoyed Umineko more.

Also, what >>11777299 said.

Great - thanks for the replies.

One more dumb question: this http://vndb.org/v67 IS the exact VN to go with, correct?

It looks like there's a couple different versions of it as well going by the screenshots. Do you know where I should be looking to download this from? I figured I'd just type "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni" into any torrent website, but I just want to make sure I get this right.

You'll get differing opinions on this, but I'd say look for the original doujin release (暇潰し編 contains chapters 1-4, 祭囃し編 contains 5-8).

If you need English, the Mangagamer release is your only option anyway, and if that's the case, I hear they're retranslating it for the Steam release, so you probably want to wait for that version (the original translation had some major issues from what I've heard).

Fuarrk, after all these years?

Yeah, I do need English, so I guess I'll poke around the VN wiki for more info or links. In the meantime, if I do decide to hold off on Higurashi, are there any other good horror/mystery VNs to check out? Already played Saya and Ever17. I'll do some more browsing on vndb, too.

For those of you who learned to read moon, how many years/semesters/whatever did you have to study to read VN's proficiently?

I've taken a Japanese 1 class (obviously that isn't enough), but I would just like an idea on a general basis of what it took you for you guys to get to that level. Such as how much Kanji studying you did outside of a regular class.

Try not to think in terms of "years" or "semesters". Some people, who self study, do more in one single day than the typical class-goer does in a week.

(see picture)
Level 1 is of course preferred, but I'd say level 2 is enough for pretty much any game if you have access to a dictionary. At level 3 you should be able to enjoy easier games, but it's going to take some effort. At level 4, you can just make up your own story for the most part.

However, it's been 2 years since then and I still can't get over the likes of Ruitomo and Railsoft novels without over-relying on ITH. Though I guess that's to be expected since I didn't put much effort into acquiring new Kanji and vocabs.
